[b]I don't understand it...I just don't get the combination of chicken and waffles. It's like grits and cheese to me - how in bloody tarnation does cheese go with grits??? It's a southern thang, I know, I know...I just don't see the two being combined and eaten. So how do people eat chicken and waffles? Is it just the regular way with butter and syrup on the waffles and chicken on the side? Am I totally misconstruing the title? confuse

Thats what I used to think.."fried chicken n waffles"? Well the waffle is so good its like a cake..you use the butter and syrup like usual. But you put the syrup on the perfectly fried chicken as well. I know I know .."what the hell?"..but believe me, its goood. You dont smother it with syrup though, just a lil bit.

And Roscoe's definitely KNOWS how to make their waffles...I've had chicken n waffles at all the places I've been and after samplin the best of soul food in LA, Chicago, Boston, New York, DC... Roscoe's still gets it hands down for their waffles. I did hear that Gladys Knight's place in Atlanta is pretty good too but never got a chance to sample it.

And re: the syrup on the chicken is kinda like honey-dipped fried chicken ('xcept it's syrup, not honey).

peach cobbler.. Nana made the best...no need to even try it after her..she gave me the recipe before she passed an i still cold never get it like hers..like all great chefs i believe she left out something smile ...havent thought of her for a time smile

smile Whenever a recipe changes hands it never really does taste the same, does it... smile

I had a aunt-like neighbor who made the best lemon cake that I and quite a few others had ever tasted...in fact, she became very well know in the area for her lemon cake. It had a sort of "wet" moistness to it from perhaps a lemon juice mixture that she created.

She would bake the cakes for family, friends, church socials, parties, etc...Anytime you wanted one all you had to do was ask, but she would not share that recipe for ANYTHING!...LoL...I think she knew no one would get it right anyway...(folks have tried to guess the recipe and failed...!!...lol!)...and, maybe she wanted the memory of her cake left intact.

I miss her and I do miss her lemon cake... smile

I know that cake.

I make that cake.

I'm well-known for that cake.

EVERYBODY and their great-grandparents asks me to make that cake.

I know that recipe.

EVERYBODY says nobody makes it like me.

But I sure as hell ain't aunt-like! wink

Btw, that wet moistness is a glaze. And I shall not tell what exactly it consists of, or how to make it perfectly.

I used 2 eat at Po' Folks in San Diego. It was excellent...(mmm, the catfish!) but yeah, they went away. bummer, it was good eatin'.

Where I live now, there's a place called "Hush Puppies", the catfish there is excellent! The other dishes r very southern and very fried. Good eats!

This thread is not only making me hungry... just reading it clogged one of my arteries!

In my opinion, the best soul food in the country is found at Dip's, 405 W Rosemary St, Chapel Hill, NC.

The best one i was in most recently here in NYC is BB Smith's... Delicious!!!

Do you mean B Smith's? Last time I was there, there wasn't much down home soul food but some strange mix of overpriced pan asian cuisine.

If you want real deal soul food you gotta come Uptown to Harlem and have some Amy Ruths at 116th & Lenox (Malcolm X Blvd)... Sylvia's (126th & Lenox) still has better fried chicken, but Amy Ruths is the joint folks are flocking to.

Other spots are Spoonbread on 110th near Columbus, Londel's on 8th Ave (Frederick Douglass) near 140th, Wells on 7th (Adam Clayton Powell) near 138th, and the Bayou (Louisiana cuisine) on Lenox near 126th.

Woops.. that is what i meant.. Yeah.. I dont' know what you were eating.. but it was delicious to me..and they had no pan asian cuisine when i was there.. You must of had an off nite!

How long ago did you go? Check this review from citysearch.com:

"The Food
Out with the upscale soul food that was featured in the former location on Eighth Avenue. Now you can surf the pan-Asian wave... Southern dishes remain, but not all are worth the trip. For example, pork ribs are sodden and tasteless..."

http://newyork.citysearch...editorial/

The B. Smith's in DC still rocks the ol' soul food cuisine tho (at least they did as of a few years back).

Soulfood in my travels...

When in LA I got down with Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, and then hung out at that spot, Reign owned by Keshawn Johnson.

In Chi-town, Harolds, and a spot called Honeysuckle on the South Side (dunno if they still there)... used to chill at the Salaam on the South Side til they closed down sad

In DC, Georgia Brown's was the best with a close second: B. Smith's with the original Soul Food menu. The best chili dogs are at Ben's Chili Bowl near 14th & U.

In Boston, gotta have Bob the Chefs on Columbus Ave.

you know any good ones in atlanta?

Here in Atlanta there are a few good ones, but...

Hodges- This soul food joint is on Candler Rd in southeast Atlanta(not far from where Chris Tucker grew up at). This one is the best. Those sistas in there be throwing down seriously. They have some meat loaf that will straight make you cut up!!! They can't keep enough of that supplied. Also worth mentioning is their top-notch potatosalad. Their fried chicken is the bomb too. And last but not least is their super duper apple cobbler. OOO WEEE!!!. I can't get enough of that cobbler. Hodges is the best soul food place in the ATL...No DOUBT!!! Every one I've referred to at that place has had nothing but compliments and more money to give to those nice sistas hooking up that good food...can you say repeat business???
