So, you're saying I cannot start a sentence with "So"?

So what ?
Smile, it's Friday I hate to be disagreeable, but you can start a sentence with so. In fact 'So' is an entire sentence in it's own right. And also a very good album. Yes, I know I shouldn't start a sentence with 'and'. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

And why not? | |

Because it creates an air of mystery and suspense. Luring the unsuspecting Orger into the thread.

Why not start a thread with "I went out today ...." why the So??? Its not needed.. True, it's not necessary, but it is a common way of indicating that you are launching into an anecdote on which you are soliciting opinions. Slow day today, RED?

I agree with you, those types of so's are completely surplus to requirements. It's akin to starting it with 'Well,..'. At least there aren't any 'So, I was like, well, you know...' threads...yet. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

And why not? Just English grammar I think. Same thing with 'but'. I was told this many years ago in English class : 'Never start a sentence with 'and' - unless you're writing poetry, then it's allowed.' But I don't always follow the rule. And why should I ? Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Well, the purpose with grammar is to create coherent and comprehensible sentences that you don't have to read three times to understand. As long as you adhere to that basic principle you're usually okay. I think you should learn the rule before you break it though. And it's never okay to choose arbitrarily between "your" and "you're". Yeah, I'm talking to you - ninety per cent of all orgers.

From the usage note in the American Heritage Dictionary's entry for "and": It is frequently asserted that sentences beginning with and or but express “incomplete thoughts” and are therefore incorrect. But this rule has been ridiculed by grammarians for decades, and the stricture has been ignored by writers from Shakespeare to Joyce Carol Oates. When asked whether they paid attention to the rule in their own writing, 24 percent of the Usage Panel answered “always or usually,” 36 percent answered “sometimes,” and 40 percent answered “rarely or never.”

I've noticed that Brits seem to use "right" to start off some of their sentences in the same way that Americans often use "so". i.e., "Right, I'm off to the pub"

Actual Answer to question is:
American's Don't like to keep quiet, and they are not great at starting a conversation. Thus, by starting with so, they feel as though they are not starting a conversation but continuing with one. We can talk to one stranger, think about what was said and then talk with another stranger as if the two strangers were the same person. We are the borgue, resistance is futile.
