Prince's least "Princely" song

Which one of his songs sounds more like it was done by another artist than by Prince himself? It doesn't have to a bad song at all, but simply different to other Prince songs. We all know that Prince isn't defined by one musical genre only, but still, there are certain musical clues (harmonical progression, melodical progression, arrangement - although that depends on the era, of course -, ...).

In my opinion, three of those songs are The Love We Make, The Marrying Kind and If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life. They are all perfect and brilliant songs, but the clues of his genius in the music are much more "obvious" for music lovers than in other brilliant songs. The arrangement and harmonical progression indicates that he aimed for a progressive sound, but still wanted to make it sound and feel cool and relaxed. I like that.

I'm dying to read your opinion on this. And girls, send some butt pics along.

I think "It" sounds very unPrince-like. Not his usual rhythm, much more simple, kind of like what a more conventional electronic artist would arrange or compose. Even the solo sounds unlike his usual Santana style and sounds like something that would be on a Pink Floyd album.

The vocals are typical, but simple and repetitive too.

That song is very Princey I thought.

My votes would be

Man O War

The Flow

it's like somebody wrote those for him

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I'd also like to include Diamonds and Pearls. It's very opera-like, prog-poppy, almost like something Tears For Fears would do.

I'm going to throw "Solo" on the list.

Interesting song (IMO), but I've never thought the melody or mood of the song had a Prince sound.

Any of that shit hop bullshit he has made attempts at. Prince was known for making music that jams, not bores.

When I compare the 2...perhaps you are right in the slowness of both songs. I still think Solo is sooooooo sad sounding, almost defeated and he drops the melody at times in the song, which for me makes it sound very un-Prince-ish. (Am I still wrong? confused )

As Lisa Coleman has noted, Manic Monday has the same tune as 1999. (Go ahead - try singing it.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think Solo is very unique for a Prince song, and the only thing that seems like it to me is God... so it is unprince-ish by math... but I think of God as being so Prince-ish because Purple Rain was a big time, and I listened to that b-side and he performed it in concert.

But I think you are right! I just like to always point out another view.

I think songs like "Bob George" don't sound like prince. I disagree with the 3 chains o gold one though because I see prince sometimes as a great composer and songs like 3 chains o gold and old friends for sale are the ones that I remember prince by....other than the funk smile but that's just my opinion.

Funny that because songs like Bob George are half the reason I fell in love with the music. That to me back then was ALL that Prince was. Dark, filthy, strange... wonderful.

I'm quite surprised that the sycophants haven't leapt upon this thread yet and criticised everything we've mentioned.

i'd say Van Gogh and Beautiful Strange (i like the latter and it sounds like him because its great musicianship but the vibe doesn't remind me of anything he's done. Satisfied and On the Couch are both more bluesy, this is something short of BLUES, but its not a typical ballad either).

also i'd say Sweet Baby and Shy
