“You know, despite my lowered expectations and moderate distaste for all things LotusFlow3r after the first couple of update-less months, I was pretty excited by this update. 13 minutes of new, live Prince footage on a Friday morning is an unequivocal good. And one of the songs is a rare one!

But still, even as I've got these on repeat and am digging them--you can't forget that most A-list artists with a clue would be offering this level of multimedia *for free on YouTube*. Or on their own sites for free. (Look at what Beck has been doing of late.) As, say, a teaser for what the paid experience would constitute. But with Prince, this amount of media is the "deluxe" package. Just so weird.

So I'm not hating. I like these live performances. I just wish there were more, is all. On top of the membership fee, I'd even pay for a la carte lossless downloads of the songs--so I wouldn't have to gain-boost 'em and sequence them myself.”

“I remember a record producer telling me once that 'a great song is a great song - whether it's recorded in Peter Gabriel's space station (the one which orbits the Earth in relation to the bpm of whatever's being recorded at the time) or an outdoor toilet in a Glasgow tenement block.

I've taken a slight artistic licence with his exact words in an attempt at portraying an objective clarity for a worldwide audience of Prince obsessives, but what he meant was that no amount of polish can shine a reflective surface on excrement.

From Boris to Wall, Bart to Greycap, we all know why we're here. My perspective is that Prince Nelson is among the rare species of human being some pedant had to conjure the term 'genius' to label in the first place. We're attracted to the sheer alieness of this oddity, this freak, who got under all our skins - despite the continual damning evidence that he was deeply uncomfortable in his own.

Now, Chocolate Box. I got a box of chocolates that'll rock the socks of any girl. Jesus wanking vigourously into a baby's pram, I thought, that's a dismal lyrical hook. Musically, that electro-harmonic layered three-part voice chorus that he mastered in 1996 now sounds like a pterodactyl's squaks must have sounded like to a caveman.
The mannered 'young, energetic' voice he squeezes out, the rhythmic pants (which someone crueller than me might insinuate sound like exhaustion rather than lust), the simplistic electric guitar hook, ok, etc, you get the picture. I was underwhelmed. It reminded me of that 'Are We Livimg To Die' outtake. I didn't like that either. I thought it was shit. Lazy shit from a bored genius.

However. fifteen or so listens later (I know they shit starts tasting good if it's all you have to eat) but I think I now get it. of course, I'm still not too fond of the cheesetastical vocal intro - but the stuttery colours and robotic energy do capture the bouncy electro fizz of modern pop very well - and I'm not adverse to sweet junk food at all - as long as I get my norishment from the main course, that being Lotus Flower. Hopefully. Please. Please.

Is it a meal? MPLSsound as tangy appetiser, Lotus Flower as rich main course and Exiler as choclately, rich dessert? Probably not. But my point (not that I believe in points or all-encompassing summations of perspective reality) is that I'm quite looking forward to hearing the full song before I make up my mind.

However.”

“Was listening to the Black Album on the way to work today, and as I was bopping along, I realised that it is actually I really positive record! Le Grind is a rally fun uptemo number, Cindy C has a rap about how music can help you rise above depression, drugs and poverty...When 2 R in love is one of his most soulful ballads, and of course Rockhard in a Funky place...da bomb! Sure, it has it's freaky moments, but even Bob George kinda brings a smile to my face, it's a big cartoon! It's not meant to be taken seriously...”Hatman, 12/08 in the forums
