John Legend sells rights to his catalog.

John Legend sells catalog...ypost.com)

ohn Legend is the latest pop star to cash in on the sale of publishing rights to his music catalog.

The R&B singer-songwriter reached a deal with global investment firm KKR & Co. and music company BMG to sell both copyrights and the rights to receive royalties from songs he wrote beginning in 2004.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Filings indicate that the agreement was consummated in September.

Its interesting to think this man has been in the industry now for almost 20 years. Time just goes right on by.

John Legend

One of these isn't like the others (and not in the way you're probably thinking)...

Its a very odd purchase because hes not a "catalog" artist per say where you can see reissues and pakages coming out. He has one multiplatnum album and one platnum and two gold, six studio albums one christmas one and a few collabos. Granted he is very marketable as host of this and that he is the "guy" you get for a show and ceremony this and that but thats different in buying his music catalog, he probably saw it as they will pay what for my what? sold, I mean for an artist that came out as the albumselling days ended its a good sale for him to pull off

Everybody's doing it it seems.

I guess owning a catalogue isn't what it used to be.

There was a time when artists would've held on for dear life to their catalogue.

He has about 4 songs that anyone who owns them can live comfortably off them forever.

I would think it's due to loss of revenue from streaming. Just another asset to a company. Something is definitly a foot though. They know something we don't.

Wow! This is surprising since he is so young. Wonder why no one is disclosing the amount? I betcha its very low compared to the others. I want to know if he got more than the 50 million Tina received, which I thought was relatively low.

I would think Tina's catalog and legacy would be more valuable than John's but you never know because the music industry is still considered by many as the good ole boys club. So it would not surprise me if he got the same or more than Tina.

I know there was one song of his that was everywhere quite a few years ago. Can't name it to save my life.

I more remember Jamie Foxx impersonating him on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

I sorta chuckled when I read this thread title. I said to myself, "even he knows his music is shit, and wants nothing to do with it." lol lol

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I heard that there was a mistake made by an intern and they purchased the catalog. They were told "Buy the catalog of another legend" they thought they said "Buy John Legend" the intern has since been let go . Yes this is a joke. lol

John(whom I met on the set of a Jada Pinkett Smith directed movie & seen @ countless award ceremonies) was approachable, honest, humble, & accommodating just a pleasure to meet.

My favorite songs by him is his duets with both Andre 3000 & Smokey Robinson.

BTW: I always thought Kanye owned John's catalog since he was once signed to his label GOOD Music.

It's a shame because he is talented but his music lacks personality and aside from "Ordinary People" and "Green Light", just doesn't have the hits.

Maybe it's good his music doesn't possess much character though because in recent years, he's shown to be a pandering, sanctimonious type who only says what people wants to hear to get in good with the elite. Either way, nobody these days is listening to John for his music.
