This has been an interesting thread but I have to respond to the original question. . .
Yes as a MJ and Prince fan I absolutely hated that MJ took so long to release albums after Thriller. However, I think MJ sought to create maximum cultural impact with each album and if you look at the fact that he would release an album and then support it with a two year long world tour..not to mention heal and recover from his various cosmetic surgeries and then start the process over...well it becomes obvious he couldn't rush them out as he did in the '70s. Prince didnt like staying on tour for more than 6 months...that was what worked for him. Prince kept it moving...literally!! . .
Michael was also willing to take the time to give his best work. Prince worked a lot more decisively. It is hard to imagine Prince allowing an artist to spend 6 months on his Album cover design like MJ did with Dangerous. . .
Now as for who came for who. I heard that Michael heard the big looping keyboards at the start of 1999 and wanted that effect on Thriller which he got on the track of Thriller...sorry I can't remember the reference. Alan Leeds also publicly stated that Prince was motivated to become a better performer due to MJ. Firstly, Prince was embarassed by the fiasco at the James Brown concert and swore that would never happen to him again and that he would become the best living performer...he certainly became the only performer to be able to compete with MJ at that level. Prince had already began to move in that direction by the 1999 tour but by Purple Rain the risers got higher, the splits were more frequent. Sad too because this is where it seemed his pain started. .. .. And finally Prince wanted to top MJ after Thriller...there is a story which I read through a link from a thread here. Prince wanted to knock MJ off the top spot he held for 1983. Talking to a produce or an executive at Warners..Ted something (Templeton? I am not sure) told him..you should get a producer..get Quincy Jones. Prince replied ."I am going to produce it Myself!" He did and 1984 was his year...could have been even bigger if he stayed on the road longer, released more singles and videos from Purple Rain and took the tour overseas. However, after that, I honestly think Prince wanted to keep working and doing things his way. I don't think he really cared too much about trying to be the biggest Pop star or competing with MJ..although I do think he hired MJ's former manager, Frank Dileo, for Diamonds and Pearls...but Prince was his own man/artist on his own path. HERE
The only time Prince spoke publicly about Michael: Prince Talks About Michae... - YouTube
Prince didn't consider MJ as anything other than a fool with foolish music. No respect.
That very same interview you hear, Michael WROTE Bad for Prince and himself. Michael wanted to share his MAIN single with Prince. Huge respect.
Prince tried to run over Michael with his car after the James Brown concert in 1983.
Michael is better than Prince.
