I like both of those, but I'm going with Sun City because it's uptempo and you can dance to it. biggrin

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

To answer the question, I like "Do they know it's Christmas" This song functions more like a regular song and not a charity song (either that makes sense or not you chose).

I think it boils down to my preference for the chorus of DTKIC or We are the World. I think We are the World has some amazing "spots" namely the MJ, Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper parts, but otherwise I prefer the Do they know it's Christmas song.

I hate any subsequent covers of these songs due to a lack of talent remaking them and just general inferiority.

Those weren't the only two acts like that.

USA For Africa - We Are The World

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?

Northern Lights - Tears Are Not Enough (on the We Are The World album)

Hands Across America - Hands Across America

Hear n' Aids (heavy metal acts) - Stars (plus an album by various artists)

Hermanos del Tercer Mundo

There was also Live Aid, Farm Aid.

"We Are The World" was so fucking massive when it happened. I mean, it was B-I-G! Band-Aid's song is a little limp out the gate, but it picks up a bit. "We Are The World" is schmaltzy, but it's supposed to be, a bit. It was still written by who major stars: Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Oddly, Kool & the Gang and Jody Watley were at Band Aid, but not USA For Africa.

But which one was better? Just for the star power, I'm going with "We Are The World."

'Do They Know Its Christmas' by some distance for me. I know its a charity single but 'We Are The World' is just too cheesy for me. It also opened the door to MJ including these kind of songs on most of his albums for the rest of his career.

"Christmas" is a better written song.

"Do They Know It's Christmas" for all the reasons already mentioned.

But if I were to choose an all-star benefit song as a favorite, it would be "Sun City" by Artists United Against Apartheid. A lineup that includes Miles Davis, George Clinton, Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, Nona Hendryx and Run-DMC among others beats all the rest.

We can knock it all we want and say it was schmaltzy, cheesy or whatever, but it remains a landmark in the history of music. Never again have you seen an all-star lineup with artists of that caliber in the same room. Just for that, I have to say that I prefer WATW. The vocal interplay between Bruce and Stevie is killer.

We Are The World because of the caliber of artists and the voices involved. It has had more of an impact than DTKIC.
We Are The World just an all around better written and pleasing song, IMO.

We are the world is dreadful. I was in elementary school when it came out and I thought people were being nice by saying it was good to support the cause behind the song. There was no way somone would go home and play that song for enjoyment lol. Still feel that way.

As a grown up i would say Do They Know is a much stronger song, the lyrics are much stronger.

We are the world is extremely cheesy.

But I do remember as a kid being crazy about the mj part in the video of We are the world.

They both represented pop music in their home countries fairly accurately,

Do They Know Its Christmas - attempting for epic but failing and ending up charmingly eccentric, with a massive melodic hook that saves it from being forgotten.

We are the World - chiselled in stone perfection but, as a result, too po-faced and cheesy for many. Relax, have some fun already!

So my favourite is do they know it’s christmas, it gives me chills, but we are the world is also sweet and kind of sugary. I like mjs solo version of it

Not being a fan of most Christmas music, Do They Know it's Christmas is one of the few that I love. It's a great song!

We are the world is awful. Good cause, bad song.

Bad cause too. Look into the fraud involved in every charitable org. Charities are scams...always have been.

With that out of the way, I am trying to think of which song makes me vomit less.

I also like these songs. Some of them were not for raising money, but it's the same kind of many artist thing:

Hope Collective ~ Give And Let Live
Freedom (This is an all female artist song from the early 1990s movie Panther)
Lousiana Gator Boys ~ How Blue Can You Get
King Dream Chorus & Holiday Crew ~ King Holiday
Eddie Murphy ~ Yeah
Black Men United ~ U Will Know

Quincy Jones & All Star Chorus ~ Hallelujah!
Stop The Violence Movement ~ Self Destruction
West Coast All Stars ~ We're All In The Same Gang
Voices That Care ~ Voices That Care
Dance Aid ~ Give Give Give
Kidney Now (from the 30 Rock TV show)

She was on one called Stop The Madness. I have that maxi single for that too. Herb Alpert is one of the other artists on it, so he has records with Janet & LaToya.

Band Aid by far because it's also a seasonal song although a few years back some WOKE group decided it was a racist song, but that's another discussion how everyone needs to just live and correct their lives today and stop worrying about fixing what u think was wrong in the past because it does not make you better now. But that said it's a better song , I rarely ever listen to we are the world anymore or have straight through probably in years, but Band Aid is a stronger structure of a song and give Midge Ure the credit though Geldof wrote most of the lyrics, Midge was the one that put that music together and organized who sang what.

I agree. We Are The World is, like, one redacted lyric away from promoting a toll-free number for donations.

That's a pretty solid list. Don't forget RuPaul's "Can I Get A Amen" lol
