Wow Babyface could be funky when he wanted

I knew that Babyface was a member of The Deele from 1983 up to 1988 but i always thought that

he was there for the slow jams and that other guys arte providing the funk.

On the Deele albums you have various people playing synths except Babyface one of the Calloway brothers from Midnight Star was playing it on Deele albums.

But if you listen to Shalamar Circumstancial Evidence all those synth

horn stab and synths are played by Babyface, funky rhythm guitar as well.

So Babyface actually perfected the Minneapolis sound synth aesthetics and he could have been a keyboardist in The Time.

Also most if not all keyboard and rhythm guitar work on 1987 Shalamar is played by Babyface.

As a matter a fact that album is The Deele providing funk feauturing Shalamar on vocals

You have to remember that earlier in his career, Face was also cool with Bootsy Collins (who gave him his stage name) and Roger Troutman. So I'm sure hanging with them rubbed off on him in some way.

Yes his 80s produced numbers are funky, and more low key in the 90s

He got his start professionally in the funk band Manchild that was based out of his hometown of Indianapolis. They had two albums, POWER AND LOVE (released in 1977) and FEEL THE PHUFF (released in 1978). They appeared on shows with Cameo and Bootsy in the late Seventies.

The song "Mary Mack" from his first solo album LOVERS (released in 1986) was pretty funky.

Other than "It's No Crime", I can't stand any of his solo work. However, I do love The Deele though. Him leaving The Deele is an even bigger tragedy than Lionel Richie leaving The Commodores. lol

Why you think it's a bigger tragedy?is it because of Kennys influence on the 90s rnb?

The last few Commodores records before he left weren't that much different from his solo albums. Songs like Three Times A Lady & Still could have been on the Dancing On The Ceiling or Can't Slow Down albums. They have even been on Lionel's solo Greatest Hits albums. He never put Fancy Dancer on them. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I agree. For the most part,The Commodores' albums were a good balance.1978's Natural High is remembered mainly for the sappy "Three Times A Lady",but this album also contains the super funky "X-Rated Movie" lol Lionel was doing his ballad thing, but the other guys wouldn't let him completely abandon the funk, lol.

Babyface is obviously a genius. He definitely fed into the whole R&B/Pop ballad thing and made most of his success with that...but I hear Funk in some of his productions. I dug "For The Cool In You", the title track. Had kind of a downbeat Funky vibe to it. I keep thinking about "This Is How It Works" by TLC + "Sittin' Up In My Room" by Brandy. Both from "Waiting To Exhale". Yeah, I know everybody's saying "Brandy"? But yeah, that main bassline is obviously inspired by Larry's on Sly + The Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)". And for the record, Brandy had some funky things on her 1st album for sure. My 2nd "1st" crush after Janet. Haha...

It's funny you mention that. I was playing this for my wife Thursday night and
she thought the lyrics were cheesy too. lol
I agree with Soul. I was a nice vintage throwback ballad reminiscent of
all the Soul vocal harmony groups of the 70's like Blue Magic, the Stylistics,The Moments, the Delfonics, etc. My favorite ballad by the Deele is Just My Luck.
Babyface best funk moments were with the Deele obviously but I liked his touch
on EnVogue's Whatever. That's one that was criminally underrated.
Don't laugh at my funk

Exactly. It's fine for somebody to be boring if they want to. It's when they start influencing others to be boring too is when my feathers get ruffled. lol

I love that one and it's because of that sexy, after midnight, "bring a stranger home at 3 a.m." Blue Magic or Dolfonics feel is why I love it. Most of the slow jams I love have that type of feel to them. As for "Two Occasions", I can't stand that one and never could. lol

I love those type of slow jams and also slow jams from folks like Terry Huff and Special Delivery, New Birth, The Chi-Lites, The Manhattans, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Heatwave, Switch, Enchantment, Average White Band, The Dramatics, Norman Conners, etc. And even the slow jams from the funk groups from the 1970s on up into the early 1980s such as Cameo, Rick James, The Ohio Players, Midnight Star, Zapp, Kwick, The Commodores, etc.

.

Slow jams prior to 1985 had a completely different feel to them. Most slow jams after 1985 sounded dull and adult contemporary.

Maybe it's because of the gear that was used. for example first half if the 80s was dominated by various analog synths like Prophet 5,Oberhaim,Roland Jupiter.but second half of the 80s was all about yamaha dx7 which was difficult to program so everybody become preset players and use the same "fender rhodes" patch from yamaha dx7,production become dull, clean and digital.

i love slow jams Mandrill Love Song,Zapp Computer Love,Commodores slow jams,Mtume You Me And Him and so many others but this Shoot 'em Up Movies have really really corny lyrics

Yeah Face did a good job producing half of this album.
The title track, Games, and Plaything were fire.
It's funny listening to Games because of Mikki Free's weird vocal on it
but the song was jamming. lol
I even dig Imaginary Love sung by Sidney Justin.
Their followup album Wake Up was a huge disappointment. It seemed like they were chasing the NJS trend with Caution and moved away from that raw funk on Circumstantial Evidence. I did like the title track Wake Up and Pink Box which is self explanatory. lol
