She isn't ripping him off or channeling him, he is no longer on this plane as she stated. This should be considered a tribute and a show of inspiration, IMHO. She was an approved collaborator, she gets to do wtf she wants and I can't wait to see what's next. Janelle even stated she was working with him on sound design for this project prior to 16.

So, copying someone is not considering ripping them off? confused

.

Didn't she already do numerous tributes to Prince? confused

If Bruno or even Maroon 5 released this everyone would ve shamed them for ripping off Prince, but since it’s Janelle no one says that. It’s a fun song but there’s no hype element. The minimal funk vibe was poorly executed.

The fact that Prince was working with her on the album prior to his death may affect the way people listen to this. As I say, I'm spending time wondering which are the sounds they "collected together".

It's a bit like OK GO's White Noise - a fractured lens authenticity. It's brilliant. Besides, Mr Mars nor Mr 5 would have written these songs. Simples.

Although this project channels Prince's boldness in his earlier career achievements and done very well I might add.

It's NOTHING i've heard so far that would make me believe Prince(with his current believes) would approve of this profanity laced project. The visionary part of it maybe. But the blatant bisexuality & profanity. NEVER!

He approved Q.U.E.E.N and Give them what they love (he even featured on the track) on her previous record and she was speaking about bisexualiy in those songs as well.

The difference is that Janelle collaborated with Prince, and Bruno & Maroon did not (as far as I know).

.

I'm not so sure that Prince would be cool with how sexual her video was, because he did not do that stuff anymore. I mean, I get what she is trying to do here and pay homage to Prince -- but, I kinda puts Prince in a negative light, especially with new fans. I dunno -- it's a touchy subject.

.

I think she's a talented artist; I just wish she would drop all of that illuminati bullshit. It seems that is what artists have to do today, in order to stay relevant. rolleyes

Janelle is her own person, and, whether she was associated with him or not, she is in no way obligated to edit her own songs to make them more in line with what Prince may have wanted or to remove material he may have found objectionable. That was his trip, not hers, and considering how he embraced risque lyrics and image himself back when he was getting over, it would be hypocritical of him to criticize her for it. This goes for fans of his music from the peak of his career as well. Just sayin'...

indeed. besides, prince wasn't quite the devout angel himself anymore for quite a while now.
he may have frowned at her if he heard the swears but i'm quite sure he would not have had
any objections to her expressing herself whatever way she wanted wrt sexuality or anything
else. he was a fan and he was probably a lot more accepting of shit than his fans are these
days.

I am not really liking either songs but I'll stick around to see what else she has in store though.

Based on these quotes, we can expect to see Prince in the credits at least?

I don't understand the backlash against Janelle Monae; she stated that Prince was working with her... As far as my personal preferences go, I liked the direction that Janelle was going with The Archandroid album, which was cohesive, had a vision and an auditory experience which I mostly loved. I hope that she will continue albums like that one in the future...

I promise you one day I will love her but right now I still don't.

What about the very first stab of a keyboard, right at the beginning of the song?

The track has got Prince all over it. imo. I do hope that, if true, she confirms it and that he's given due credit.

Well I remember Janelle saying that her and Prince were collecting sounds for her new album some years ago. She said it again in her new interview. Her album was supposed to be out years ago then it happened what it happened and she decided to focus on acting for a while. I don't know who created this beat but if he was his it's cool.

If Bruno released it it would sound a lot more 80's, it'd be pure pastiche. This sounds like an interpretation through Janelle's mind, it couldn't have been released in the 80's, kind of like how the video is full of Prince references but nothing directly quoted. I don't even consider Maroon 5. As for the funk "vibe", that is what it is, a vibe. This isn't Janelle copying previous songs directly, like that Childish Gambino album, she's trying to create something modern - for better or for worse.

I like what I'm hearing in the 2 new singles. Yes, she's gone pop and derivative but she's saying something unique to herself--certainly making strong statements, and she has "the flow." She clearly worked closely with Prince and definitely takes his sound in the 1 single--I consider it as a tribute, as well. I approve! Just waiting on tha album....

^This. It's honestly kind of sad how many people are turning their nose up at the sexuality and unapologetic self-expression in this song. Who are you to say that Janelle shouldn't be doing this, or that it's doing a disservice to Prince and he wouldn't have approved? It sounds like Prince was a real friend and believer in what Janelle was doing, even if the content was something he wouldn't have gone for later in his career. I highly doubt he would have claimed some kind of moral high ground just because a strong, young black woman was expressing her sexuality in a healthy and fun way, while still continuing to be the good-hearted role model she has always been. My stance on religion and morality in general has always been this: you can believe in god all you want, you can take whatever you want from your religion if it makes you feel better. But the minute you start policing and judging others (who aren't hurting anyone) just because they don't go by your narrow guidelines, it's time for you to step back and rethink your life.
