I'm not knocking Michael Jackson at all. I'm merely pointing out that you don't have to play an instrument excellently to be a great songwriter. Michael and Madonna were/are both great songwriters but not virtuoso on instruments.
Madonna, MJ and Prince were/are all heavyweights. Why not respect all of them and not knock anyone down.
You say MJ was an entertainer. Well, isn't Madonna too? Aren't her shows multi dimensional extraganzas that involve dancing and video and other elements besides merely singing.
What is the main difference between Madonna and MJ/Prince. She's the only female one. Us women always have to prove ourselves more than men. Our talent is always questioned. I think sexism rears its ugly head here a lot.
Agree with this. Never got why mj or prince fans could not stand her or them being mentioned in the same sentence.
I can, and i'm a fan of both of them Michael and Prince; or may i say three of them?
Fan of all as well for most of my life, I just think Madonna needs to chill a little though and stop embarrassing herself [Edited 7/13/16 12:55pm] |

Never liked her,Totally overrated in the day, she was no more than a pop bubblegummy poser who sounded like minnie mouse on helium.. When she wasent lipsyncing... she wasent a serious artist ever in her career, She never grew as an artist , she cant play an instument and now shes just stale cake ,, its over, but for 58 i will give her credit shes got alot of energy and stamina its hard night after night DANCING AROUND SINGING OVER PRECORDED MUSIC at that age. Her pathetic and embarressing attempt at singing anything live.. let alone giving her the privilage of honoring The great and beautiful Prince wearing that liberace jacket, live...croaking out the wrong song choice,live.. stumbling around with Stevie.. live.... that was enough to make me cry all over again,
were left with inferior talent people:(
Haha true. But i remember being shocked when i first heard 'Crazy for You' cuz she sounded completely different..There was a singer back then, i think her name was Alicia, who sounded EXACTLY like her, she had like one popular song and that was it...Do u remember? Dont remember the song but im gonna google, lol
ETA.
Her name was Alisha and she actually had a couple popular songs back then and had cut 3 albums n 12 singles..
One was Baby Talk https://youtu.be/3OPS_CuW5io
Heres another, All Night Passion https://youtu.be/BX9ebT-Zy8o[Edited 7/14/16 15:37pm]"Almost all art is trying to become an anaesthetic and at the same time a healing session drawing up the magical electrics.” |

Madonna does not play ANY instrument at a minimally profesional level so to see one of her fans knocking MJ for not playing instruments is ludricous. Madonna can dilly dally on a guitar and a piano but that's it. Sge doesn't even warrant a comparison to Prince on the field. MJ wrote all of his most famous hits so to say he "required a lot of help" to write is ridiculous. But, then again, why am I defending MJ to a Madonna fan? MJ is a heavyweight talent as was Prince. Madonna doesn't compare to them on that area. She simply is a LOT of levels underneath them. Prince is, arguably, the most complete musical act in the history of modern music and MJ is, arguably, the greatest entertainer ever. Madonna doesn't even begin to touch them. Talent-wise they blow her off the park and Madonna would be the first to admit it. And you know it full well.

Agree and I notice a double standard when it comes to female celebrities. Madonna is always bashed for attention seeking behavior but other female celebrities who do the same thing are never criticized. With Madonna, what you see is what you get and she is not phony. She has openly professed to loving attention and not caring what people think. That I can respect unlike some celebrities who use similiar PR tactics and front like they are above it all. Madonna is a legend and ICON. She has nothing to prove. She can do whatever the hell she wants. |

Just read this after having read your first note. She's not MUCH of a vocalist, BUT, she DOES HAVE a tone that resonates with the music-buying public. It's along the lines of Karen Carpenter (whom she cites as an influence.) Another singer in the Carpenter tradition is Gloria Estefan; not much of a vocalist either, but who has a "tone" that people seem to gravitate toward. I hope I didn't come off as "bitchy" in my last retort 2u. Just trying 2 understand. <3
You didn't come off as "bitchy". You're just trying to defend Madonna with education and constructive arguments.
Look, I love Madge's music. Really do. But I don't see any talent in her apart from her marketing capacity and capability of conducting a career. Musical talent though? Nope. Prince and MJ are the Alps to Madonna's valley little hill. She's not even comparable to her peers. I know this hurts her fans but I think that, in their heart of hearts, they know this full well.

Oh, GOOD! I'm glad u could tell from my tone! LOL! She's NOT a very good singer, but she DOES have that "tone"/"timbre" that people seem 2 like, but if u were 2 strip off all the studio trickery, she wouldn't have much of a voice at ALL. I agree, and I'm one of those fans. Her marketing capacity is what has made her the star she's been all these years and she's certainly pushed all the right societal buttons to garner her the fame she's been enjoying for the past 3 1/2 decades. She's got that no-nonsense, "go fuck yourself" attitude and it's worked WONDERS 4 her. LOL! Take care and thanks 4 hearing "me," ML! <3 Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up. |

This to me is a very contradictory post. One the one hand you say she's not a good singer, but you admit people like her tone/timbre. But isn't that what makes someone a good singer to a lot of people that they like the sound of their voice and the emotion in it, not whether they hit every note in a technically perfect way?
You say her marketing ability is what made her a star, but marketing alone won't work unless people like what it is you are marketing. You don't maintain fame for over 30 years based on marketing, attitude and pushing buttons alone, you have to have talent to go along with it.
Look at a group like the Spice Girls. They were good at marketing with their different images, had ambition etc. But they didn't last like Madonna has. What does that tell you? |

This tells me that the corporation created 5 member female group couldnt stay on the same page long enough to keep the group together n move on into the future....
As for singing abilities, back in the 80s when Madonna first hit the scene many people tbought her heavy dance based music was being sung by a black girl. In the months of her first album release the cover was not publicized much to keep up the illusion as her first couple of singles were mostly being played on black radio stations...Remember, Madonna was born n raised in the Detroit area and gathered many influences there...To this day i do not know how people thought she was black as she never sounded that way to me...When she became more popular, her voice was more bubblegum pop-like, which was big at the time. I wrote in a previous post here that i had been surprised she sang the "Crazy for You" song(which was a one-off single from the movie Vision Quest and not on her album). Say what you will but she tried to stretch and improve her small voice over the years, as well as working hard to present entertaining choreography in her shows while singing to the best of her ability at the same time, no lip syncing.. Madonna worked her ass off to become the icon she is and its been quite obvious to the world and her fans..

Her recorded voice is the coolest, sickest sounding shit ever put to tape. Say what you "will" about her live vox. I have my opinions on that too.
But yes...the emotion and passion in her live voice AND recorded voice plus how fucking COOL her voice sounds on a record. Those of you that don't hear it...sad for you. The P tribute was full of emotion and vulernability.

Gotta say, she performed an amazing La Vie En Rose on the Rebel Heart Tour as well ... no band, no backing track, just her singing. I've seen her a few times before but even I was surprised how great her voice was for that. |
