Because MJ did everything in his power to protect it and he expressed he did not want it sold but suddenly and quietly the Estate sells his share without no legitimate explanation. Any REAL MJ fan would care.

I'm no Branca fan but Sony had the leverage to buy MJ's half since at least 2006. The estate doesn't have 750 million to match the offer.

How do you know this? Branca said not to long ago that the Estate was never selling the catalog and if there was a clause put in place in 2006, why did Branca affirm that he was not selling it? The executives can not be trusted. I have to see a receipt for me to believe anything. I don't think all their decisions have been in the best interest of Michael and his children.

A new book about Michael Jackson entitled ‘Off The Wall – From the Beginning, Brick by Brick’ is due to be released next week through independent media company, Sixteen11. The A4 paper is over 100 pages featuring licensed images of the star from his early years up to and including the release of Off the Wall. In addition, the book contains a series of historic overviews split in various chapters.

“As Michael was such a visual artist, I wanted to see more as such an iconic time period is currently being revisited” says author Pez Jax. “Therefore I decided to set about filling in that gap and producing a book of stunning images and detailed historical overviews.”

Mijac, MJJ Productions, Optimum Productions, the master recordings, part of the video archive, and his belongings are still in the estate's hands
Peacock, Jackson Productions, part of the video archive, is still in the family's hands

Unfortnate that Sony/ATV is owned fully by Sony but with those entities still in the hands of Michael's estate and The Jackson family, I feel THOSE are more important

everything that's not Thriller is finally getting love. For years when he was alive, it was believed by many that books about his music or books about him that were positive wouldn't sell, but recent releases have been proved that wasn't true

They are more important but it is still shady how this deal went down. It still minimizes the credibility of the Estate.

I agree, Sony/ATV is not Michael Jackson's legacy. Sony/ATV is an investment, a means to an end . Sure there is an emotional connection since MJ fought so hard to keep it. But did he plan to keep it forever or was it as a means to an end. Michael Jackson's own legacy is his own music, publishing etc which his estate owns.

It's the record industry, of course it's shady

That clause is in a contract Michael himself so he knew. I honestly feel if he had sold it and Neverland, he wouldn't have had to do This Is It, could've released material on his own terms, get rid of the snakes, raised his kids, and lived his life

True but I still think the clause talk is b.s. I have to see a receipt honestly. I don't trust those executives and you make great points but I believe Michael's decision should still be respected even in death. He expressed that he did not want it sold. IMO, it was a great investment and the reason why he was a target was because he was the most successful BLACK entertainer/artist that owned the Beatles, Elvis etc. That is why he was a threat. I loved how he followed his heart and tried to change the system. The reason why he did not want to sell Neverland and SONY catalog is because it meant a lot to him and stood for everything he represented, Neverland in particular. So I don't see anything wrong with the fact that he fought for what he believed in and to save apart or piece of his legacy. Regardless of how some feel, that catalog and Neverland were APART of his legacy that has now been stolen from him.

I feel like the catalogue and neverland were a blessing and a curse. His life and quality of life was never the same again. People have said the same of Thriller blowing up, and then this being the snowball effect. I'm not saying he shouldn't have made investments, I think for me it's mainly about his drive and long term benefits of those investments and inspiration representing his success with great results, even though with it came a lot of leeches later on. Nothing is forever. If what he did inspired many generations later to aspire to do what he did and show what could be done in music, business, the arts, etc. and gave him a chance to give rights back artists who deserved them eg. little richard, then he's done his job and told the system to fuck off, and others will and continue to keep fighting the power.

^ I agree with this too 100%

But I still think the executives are taking advantage and are only thinking about their own interests. Really if we do the math, none of this adds up. 750 million for a billion dollar catalog? That's. B.S. I understand the catalog caused alot of strife for Michael but it still doesn't change that the catalog was HIS and he verabitimly expressed that he did not want it sold and the executives of the Estate took complete advantage of that.

For me, its not even about the catalog, its about the fact that his OWN Executives took complete advantage of him. They obviously can not be trusted.

I don't understand the crying that MJ's music
will be used for commercials. Ever since
MJ's passing there's a national commercial that
uses Thriller to sell Halloween costumes.
Plus MJ leased The Beatles music for sneaker
commercials so why should his music be too
good for commercials?

For what it's worth, Joseph and Katherine Jackson are happy about the sale of Sony/ATV:

A Job well done

On behalf of my wife Katherine and myself, I would like to personally thank the Executors of my Son’s Estate for a Job well done. Selling the Music catalog at the high end of today’s Market value of over 750 Million US Dollars, has secured many times over the financial future of Michael’s children: Prince, Paris and Blanket.

It is every fathers dream to secure the financial well being of his children. That is what drove me to work 2 jobs in my youth while struggling to make it through the Entertainment world.

Today, although my son Michael Joseph Jackson is no longer with us, I know he is looking down on his children from heaven as a proud father would, knowing he has secured a lifetime financial foundation for each of them

So, what now? Discuss!

This is old but really??

http://nypost.com/2015/04...-side-gig/

The man who holds the purse strings to Michael Jackson’s estate has also managed to carve out a lucrative side gig at the late singer’s music publishing company.

John Branca, a top entertainment lawyer and one of two executors for Jackson’s estate, sits on the board of Sony/ATV, which owns the bulk of the singer’s song catalog.

He also has landed a role as a senior adviser to parent Sony. His salary, which started at $500,000 in 2014, is set to rise to $1 million next year, according to emails leaked by Sony hackers.

Several sources tell The Post that Branca has sought a top role at Sony/ATV, which is run by CEO Martin Bandier, for some time but that Sony offered alternative arrangements instead.

His dual roles as a paid adviser to the Sony/ATV board of which he is also a member led to some handwringing within the company, according to the emails that came to light this week on WikiLeaks.

Top Sony executive Nicole Seligman scratched her head trying to figure out to whom Branca should report without ruffling feathers.

She wrote in one email: “Bandier is awkward because Branca is on the Board (as is Bandier), the Board is awkward because he is on it, so why pay him to advise it?”
The fact that Branca wears more than one hat is also raising some questions among outside observers.

Branca, along with co-executor John McClain, is tasked with assuring the financial future of Jackson’s three children — with much of their income derived from the Gloved One’s song catalog.

Sony/ATV is co-owned by Jackson’s estate and Sony. The music venture has been expanding, including teaming with an investor consortium to acquire the publishing assets of EMI in 2012.

“It’s a serious conflict of interest,” said one person, referring to Branca’s two hats working for the kids and the company. “How can he be taking money from the asset that the kids own 50 percent of?”

Branca was said to be overseas and unreachable. His lawyer, Joel Katz, declined to comment.

But Branca’s supporters say he is only looking out for the Jackson family’s interests by getting even closer to their profit source. As a consultant to Sony, he can help maximize the value of the music assets, such as advising on the purchase of new catalogs.

Branca is one of the top lawyers in the field of music and is a partner in the law firm Ziffren Brittenham. He has represented the likes of The Beach Boys, The Doors and Berry Gordy, among others.

In his consulting role, Branca will provide “legal advice on matters related to music publishing, artist development and relationships, and other matters of importance,” according to the emails.

At this point I personally expect nothing anymore, as everything is a convoluted mess and you could make a case for any scenario you wanna go with. Bottomline is, Michael is dead (so nobody knows how he would feel about it... people are known to change their minds, so what he thought 10 years ago, might not have much value now). That's all that matters. Everything else doesn't matter or help anymore.

But for some people, who are against the sale of Sony/ATV and think Michael's parents are saints and can do no wrong, them being in favor of it, might create a problem.

Bottom line is, I still enjoy listening to Michael's music, and I couldn't give a darn what his family are up to. They've got their lives and I've got mine. Michael's music shaped my youth and that I can still relate to. And the Jackson 5 (or Jacksons).

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. If some people don't have a problem with the sell than that is their feelings. However, there is nothing wrong with fans who have a problem with the sell. Michael is on record insisting that he did not want his catalog sold as late as 2009 and he expressed people were trying to kill him over his catalog. As a fan, I don't take something like that "lightly" because it turns out he was right. They got what they eventually wanted. And if he expressed he did not want it sold and the executives went out their way to sell it, it shows they obviously did not respect his feelings so its understandable if fans would be upset about that.

Well. I never said that anyone is not entitled to feel what they want to feel.

He got killed, because he chose to let his hack doctor shoot him up with Propofol.

His estate didn't go out of their way to sell it. Last year they were even considering buying Sony's half themselves. They chose to not do that, which I kinda understand, as it is not that wise to put the estate further in debt. Now they are debt free.

And what if you get all upset for nothing. What if in the current climate, Michael would have changed his mind and decided to sell. You have no idea what Michael would want, would he still be alive. And apparently the clause that one partner could buy the share of the other was put in in '06. If he never wanted that, then he should never have signed that contract, which to me is madness anyway, when one partner has so much more money at it's disposal than the other.
