I have very mixed feelings about the $700-Million the Kids will get for the Catalog...I have NEVER been on the side of The Executives (who I still believe Mike did not trust 100%)...In all fairness The Executives have made the Estate an Azz-load of Money and the cash will continue to roll-in forever...I will give The Executives credit for finding ways to make serious Money and when Katherine said she needed another home/estate The Executives released the funds.....I believe like a lot of Mike's die-hard Fans believe that he wanted the Catalog to remain in the Family UNTIL his kids were old enough to decide if they wanted to sell it...The Catalog was part of their Legacy...It is the Catalog of a lifetime that should never have been sold....$700-Million-plus is MEGA money but I think Mike is ROLLING in his grave right now...Does anyone know if The Executives had to get permission from Katherine to make &/or accept an Offer? Did they have the Power to make the sell on their own?

The only thing I am sad about with regards to the sale is that if MJ had sold this catalog himself when he was in debt, he might still be alive today. I believe that was what Randy was urging him to do. Sell the catalog, get out of debt. It took his executors to realise that was ultimately the smart move. MJ went to his grave trying to hold on to this catalog.

this the thing though, Michael already sold 50% of that ATV Catalog to Sony back in 1995....

they called it a "merging" but in all actually, he sold 50% share

in 2006, he sold another 25% share to Sony........MJ by 2008, held a 25% share of that catalog at that point

and when he entered that deal with AEG, to secure the agreement, he had to relinquish all of his assets, including his own music catalog

by the time them shows were scheduleed, it was all or nothing

I've ALWAYS said that! But Mj was obviously broke & needed the money badly for himself & his children @ the time. It was obvious he didn't really want to do it. Besides the other reason which I won't mention anymore out of respect for Janet & him not able to speak on it anymore.

Will Paul McCartney Get The Rights To His Beatles Songs Back? He's Already Working On It

By Ed Christman | March 18, 2016 3:22 PM EDT

-

-

When news broke that the Michael Jackson estate would sell its 50 percent share...ng to Sony in a $750 million deal, many wondered whether Paul McCartney would finally be able to acquire the rights to his share of the company’s crown jewel -- the Lennon-McCartney catalog -- since it begins coming up for reversion in 2018.

-

Billboard can confirm that as of Dec. 15, 2015, he has already begun the process.

-

To recap, at some point during the early ‘80s heyday of McCartney’s friendship with Jackson, he pointed out the value of music publishing. Jackson soon received a tip that ATV Music -- publisher of the Beatles’ Lennon-McCartney songs, among many others -- was available, and purchased it for $47.5 million in 1985. McCartney had long coveted his Beatles catalog -- he and Lennon lost out to ATV in a 1969 attempt to purchase Northern Songs, their original publisher -- and he never forgave Jackson for what he considered a betrayal of their friendship.

-

It’s an opportunity McCartney is not going to let slip past him again. The U.S. Copyright Act of 1976 gave songwriters the ability to recapture the publishers’ share of their songs, and in the case of titles written before 1978, writers can recapture songs after two consecutive 28-year terms, or 56 years. (That legislation allows for writers of songs issued in or after 1978 to recapture their publishing after 35 years.)

-

The Lennon-McCartney catalog begins hitting the 56-year mark in 2018.

-

In order to reclaim publishing ownership of a song, a songwriter must file with the U.S. Copyright Office, terminating the publishing anywhere from 2 to 10 years before the 56 years elapse, in order to obtain ownership of that song’s publishing in a timely manner. (If the writer doesn’t put in a notice within that window, they have another five-year period to reclaim the copyrights but each day’s delay adds another day that the publisher owns the copyright.)

-

Billboard has confirmed that on Dec. 15, 2015, McCartney filed a termination notice of 32 songs with the U.S. Copyright Office. Additionally, another source confirmed that he has filed termination notices for his songs that were issued on Beatles records from 1962-1964, although many of the titles he has moved to terminate were issued much later, including the 1969 and 1970 songs “Come Together,” “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight,” “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window,” and seven other songs on the Abbey Road album, as well as the single tracks Don’t Let Me Down” and “The Ballad of John & Yoko.” Most of the songs carry a termination date in October 2025, while “Get Back,” carries a termination date of April 18, 2025; and “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road,” on June 17, 2025.

-

According to the filing with U.S. Copyright Office, McCartney sent Sony/ATV Tunes LLC a notice of termination of grand under 17 USC section 304(C) on Dec. 15 by certified mail.

-

While many of the titles are widely acknowledged to be solo Lennon compositions -- the duo continued to share songwriter credit for the duration of the Beatles' existence -- the Act applies just to McCartney's share. “Only the McCartney half of the Lennon/McCartney songs are eligible for termination, and only for the U.S.,” an insider explained to Billboard, adding, “Sony/ATV still owns [those] Beatles songs in the rest of the world.”
-

In the case of Lennon, who died in 1980, the publisher's portion of his share of the Lennon-McCartney catalog for songs written in 1962 became eligible for reversion in 1990, because his death occurred during the first 28-year copyright term. However, in 2009, sources told Billboard that Sony/ATV cut a deal with ..., Yoko Ono, prior to the reversion dates that enabled it to retain its publisher's share for the life of the copyright, which lasts for 70 years after the author's death. But where there are co-writers, the countdown begins after the last author dies. As Paul McCartney is still alive, the clock hasn't begun to tick yet.

-

Asked whether Sony overpaid for Sony/ATV given the coming reversion, the insider said no -- half of the Lennon-McCartney publishing for the world excluding the U.S. is not chump change by any measure.

Kinda off topic but after watching the Off the Wall doc I was thinking of making like a deluxe edition playlist to include unreleased songs etc. So it would be the original album plus the demos on the 2001 remaster, full version of Carousel, Sunset driver, she's out of my life demo from the This is it ost and then I'm kinda stumped. Are there any OTW Era outtakes that were supposed to be on the album or aren't any circulating?

Also BBC iPlayer have the OTW doc on it if any UK offers missed it.

Carousel is from Thriller
the version of Sunset Driver that has been released was actually from '81 but I'd add it

Here's what is out there:
Rock With You (Original LP Version)
Get On The Floor (Original LP Version)
Off The Wall (Single Mix)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (Demo)
Workin' Day And Night (Demo)
She's Out of My Life (Demo)

Thanks & my bad, I should have remembered that "Carousel" is from "Thriller". not sure why I got mixed up there lol but I think it would have fit well on OTW too. I've heard a "I Can't Help It" demo on Youtube not sure what the original source is but it sounds like it's a real demo as Mike's like scat singing some of the words.

Definitely has more of a Stevie-vibe to it than the one on OTW.

I know some of the "demos" on Youtube are really just fan mixes. Surprised Tom Moulton never did an extended "Don't Stop" or any of the other uptempo mixes. I've read in the comments that multitracks of the Off the wall songs are out there, which is how people are doing these mixes.

I actually liked the Spike Lee documentary

Me too, would have liked to have heard from Q, Rod Temperton, Paulinho Da Costa and more folks who worked on the OTW album. Them all talking together in the studio could have more suited for one of the Classic Albums type documentaries instead though as I'd like to have heard more "technical" stuff like how many takes each song took, what instruments they used, how many times they mixed the album, alternative versions/mixes etc.

Found a pre-order on Amazon for a NEW reissue of Off the Wall on vinyl that I think will come with the documentary... What's also very interesting is it says it's 2 disc and has spilt the tracks up into disc 1 and 2... This makes me hope that it's a double vinyl 45rpm version which would be insane. It says it's being released in May... Not sure whether to pre order with the lack of details

I'm assuming it's referring to 2 disc meaning one of the discs being the DVD documentary and the other being the vinyl. Unless they are going to be cutting the vinyl to improve sound quality as historically they used to keep the record sides to a minimum so the sound wasn't compromised. They could be going with just two songs on each side of the 1st vinyl (Don't Stop & Rock with You on Side A, Workin' & Get on the Floor on Side B and then OTW, Girlfriend & She's out of my life on Side C & I Can't Help It, It's the falling in love & Burn this disco out on Side D on the 2nd vinyl). But considering they could probably have a high quality vinyl pressing emulating the original pressing there wouldn't be much need to go to the trouble of having new dub plates made etc. Found this article which is kinda off-topic but relevant to what's being discussed:

Is there a different between cutting at 45rpm for 7” and 33rpm for 12”?

No, it’s the same process. You’re still trying to cut it as loud as you can get it which is often dependent on the playing time, so that when you put the needle down the sound leaps off at you.

If you’re talking about an LP and it’s only 17 minutes long you’ve got a certain amount of room to fit 17 minutes of music in, so you can adjust the groove spacing and the groove depth accordingly and you can maybe get a bit more level on it. But in that same amount of room on another LP you might be trying to get 25 minutes of music, so you’ve got to cram the grooves closer together, they’ll be shallower grooves and you’ll probably be cutting it at a lower level as well because the cutting level – the volume that you’re trying to cut at – directly effects the speeds at which the cutter head moves across the lacquer. So if it’s a short record you can set that to move along quite quickly – on a 12” single you might only have 6 minutes of music – so you can cut deep grooves, turn the volume up and get a good, loud cut.

It doesn't matter anymore, but in a way this makes me sad:

Sony Buys Michael Jackson Stake in Music Venture for $750 Million

Sony Corp. has reached an agreement with the estate of Michael Jackson to acquire the late music star’s interest in their joint music business for $750 million.

Terms of the deal call for Sony to pay $733 million for Jackson’s 50% stake in Sony/ATV Music Publishing, as well as previously announced distributions, with payments totaling $750 million.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing, established in 1995 as a joint venture between Sony and Jackson, touts itself as the world’s leading music publisher. Together with EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV owns or administers more than 3 million copyrights; it also controls “New York, New York,” “All You Need Is Love,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Moon River,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “The Mission Impossible Theme,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Stand by Me” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

“The entertainment businesses have long been a core part of Sony and are a key driver of our future growth,” said Kazuo Hirai, Sony president and CEO. “This agreement further demonstrates Sony’s commitment to the entertainment businesses and our firm belief that these businesses will continue to contribute to our success for years to come.”

The companies said in a joint release Monday that the sale is the culmination of a process that began in September when Sony exercised its right to purchase the other partner’s interest — a right that has existed since the joint venture was formed by Jackson and Sony in 1995.

The parties expect to reach a definitive agreement by March 31, and the closing is subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Sony said the transaction will have no material impact on its consolidated results forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31. It also said the impact on Sony’s results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017, is currently being evaluated.

The estate said the transaction will not affect its continuing interests in other music assets, including all of Jackson’s master recordings as well as Mijac Music, the publishing company that owns all of the songs written by Jackson as well as songs by some of his favorite songwriters and artists that were acquired during his life. The estate will also retain its ownership interest in EMI Music Publishing.

“This transaction further allows us to continue our efforts of maximizing the value of Michael’s Estate for the benefit of his children,” said co-executors John Branca and John McClain. “It also further validates Michael’s foresight and genius in investing in music publishing. His ATV catalog, purchased in 1985 for a net acquisition cost of $41.5 million, was the cornerstone of the joint venture and, as evidenced by the value of this transaction, is considered one of the smartest investments in music history.”

Sony/ATV Music represents the copyrights of the Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Carole King, Kraftwerk, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Queen, the Rolling Stones, Richie Sambora, Sting, the Supremes, Wyclef Jean, Hank Williams and Stevie Wonder. Current artists include Akon, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, P!nk, Shakira, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

“When Sony first partnered with Michael Jackson 21 years ago to create Sony/ATV Music Publishing, we knew that this company had the ability to reach great heights,” said Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment Inc. “This acquisition will enable Sony to more quickly adapt to changes in the music publishing business, while at the same time continuing to be an unparalleled leader in the industry and a treasured home for artists and writers.”

THAT^ entire bullshit has "white supremacy" written all over it. No one in the American entertainment industry wants to see black folks, let alone the late Michael Jackson, own a damn thing at all. No publishings. No masters. No nothing! disbelief

I hope Tommy Mottola, the Pro-Zionists, and everyone/anyone on the f***ing dark side of occult science within the entertinment industry are very happy with themselves.

Oh GTFOOHWTBS weak argument. rolleyes That $750 million is great only in the short-term.

Owning publishings & masters generates billons of dollars in the long-term for the next couple of decades, hence why Sony Music Entertainment are the real winners and not the late Michael Jackson, his three children, or members of the estate.

I'm almost wishing someone would buy back that half so the music on there is not overused, exploited commercially etc.

mjscarousal

Some people are missing the point. They keep arguing MJ went to his grave for keeping the catalog BUT that has nothing to do with his ESTATE now and financial situation of the ESTATE NOW. There was no financial reason for the Estate to sell Michaels half NOW. The executives said 3 years ago the Estate was debt free so what was the reason for selling the catalog?

Because they wasnt debt fee

The issue is not about debt

The real issue is that they know the well is dry, they cant do anymore rereleases of his studio albums, thats already been done, no more posthumous albums, thats already been done, because that first one was a fake, no more documentaries, they already know the public interest for any documentaries ends with Off the Wall because that was the hidden gem, there's nothing else that can be said about Thriller that hasnt already been said.....it is all over now

I dig your point, but 3/4 billion dollars is an incredible amount of loot...the "next couple of decades" is promised to no one...id cash out too...but again, as a black man, i completely understand where youre coming from
