Well, that's interesting that he didn't want a funeral or family and friends present during the cremation. I totally understand that. What doesn't make sense to me is that clearly he didn't want a lot of fuss so why are some so-called "celebs" STILL planning a memorial concert anyway? This is so disrespectful. Perhaps the memorial concert that I heard about was planned prior to the news coming that he didn't want any of that sort of thing. Someone PLEASE tell me that these "celebs" are not defying this man's final wishes for the sake of making themselves look good....

have you not heard of 'celebrating' the memory of a life that's passed on?

many people celebrate the life of a loved one after they leave this life instead of spending time in sorrow.

imo rose wanted no sorrow in rememberance of his life.

where i'm from they call it "life celebration."

in life celebrations there are shared tears, but through those shared tears there are many rainbows of joyful smiles and laughter while recalling the good, fun, wonderful and loving memories.

imo that is what Mr Bowie wanted smiles, laughter and loving music filled memories of his life in our space in time. i do feel he wanted us all to celebrate his life.

dove

no disrespect intended

Considering everything we've seen and learned the last few days, I agree with you completely. nod

He clearly didn't want us to be sad and sorrowful about his death. He wanted us to celebrate his life through his music. Concerts and performances by people he's worked with, influenced and inspired are an understandable part of that, which I'm almost certain he thought about and if he didn't want, wouldn't be happening because I don't think his family will allow anything he didn't want.

Well, I doubt he had a huge problem with people celebrating his music. If I remember correctly, he didn't even attend the funerals of his family members and he might have simply disliked the ceremonies themselves greatly.

And no, I'm not looking forward to some sort of vapid TV-special with X-factor contestants and rappers performing his greatest hits.

And, for that matter, I have my reservations about the great number of indie rock bands that are no doubt going to do pointless covers of his songs from the "Berlin" era (with badly performed vocals and paying no attention to the original arrangements of the songs, of course).

Schlomo, check out the Pet Shop Boys remix of Bowie's Hallo Spaceboy.

This one? I put it on after my first listening of Station To Station ended (broke my own 1 album at a time rule), and it was totally jarring. It sounds like it's on some Moroder type shit. Is there a genre that he didn't touch?

Okay, thanks for challenging my comment and it seems that I made a too broad statement earlier. I checked it and he didn't attend the funeral when his half-brother (Terry Burns, whom he was close with) died. However, the reason might have been that he wanted to avoid turning it into a press event.

https://bowiesongs.wordpr...-they-say/

I looked into a printed bio I have of him and he did attend his father's funeral in the late-60s, although apparently he didn't get along with him too well. He had not been in contact with his mother for decades and when she died Bowie was living in the US. I did a few google searches but couldn't find info on that one.

Yeah, but I was most likely just thinking about the funeral of Terry Burns, as I remember he was criticized for it. That whole "Bowie's so cold as a person" thing.

Been listening to a lot of my old Bowie albums lately. Scary Monsters was a very underrated gem. Love songs like Teenage Wildlife, Kingdom Come, Scream Like A Baby, Because You're Young and of course, Ashes To Ashes. Probably his best 80s release imo.

It's my favorite Bowie album. On Bowie fan sites it's a popular favorite too. But it doesn't get talked about as much by the press or general public as his 70's classics.

It's Bowie's Lovesexy in the sense that every review of a new Bowie album seems to include the phrase "his best since Scary Monsters."

There were a few comments that I wanted to respond to all in one post without flooding this thread....first, if DAVID BOWIE himself said he didn't want to have any pomp and circumstance surrounding his death then THAT ALONE tells me that he didn't want that and these folks organizing these tributes (save the one apparently planned before his death that was supposed to be a tribute to a living legend) should be ashamed of themselves for DEFYING what his last wishes were! Come on people, common sense! How do you pay "tribute" by defying what a person ultimately wanted in regards to what happens after they died? Ridiculous...And I seriously doubt that his family members would tell someone "No" who wanted to do a tribute anyway. I mean, the family doesn't want to be the bad guy saying "No" to all those people now would they? I think it's in poor taste to defy what he wanted, period. There's no need to second guess something that he obviously made very clear well before he died.

[Edited 1/13/16 23:19pm]

He didn't want a funeral, but wanted to be remembered for his music. Concert tributes wouldn't be against his wishes, but would rather be more in line with what he preferred. That would be a celebration of his art, while a funeral would just be sadness and crying.

Geez. Have you ever been at a funeral?? Not wanting a funeral is hardly the same as having a concert where ones music is celebrated. The funeral would have been now. Nobody really wants to go to any funeral, standing next to a coffin of a person you cared about, just a couple of days after someone has passed and everything is still raw. It's a different story having a concert 2 months later, where the music and work of the deceased is celebrated.

JoeBala said:

David Bowie, pictured left, with his daughter Lexi, centre, and wife Iman, right, told his family that he did not want to have a funeral and instead wanted to be remembered for the good times and his musical career

When looking at his age, you kinda feel like, while sad, it's okayish... as in that's the way life goes... he's lived his life. But to think he has a 15 year old daughter makes it all that more tragic. Poor girl. I guess for her it's good, that she hasn't to attend a funeral.

Anyway, been listening to so much David Bowie this week. It's so strange how quickly everything is over. We had some Motörhead playing on new year's eve and the day after, even though I guess there were only 2 of us appreciating Motörhead and we also played some David Bowie (and Natalie Cole)... it's so amazing how quickly playing one's music becomes a tribute and things just change.
