Beck taking “Album of the Year”

This was not supposed to happen. Beck kicked both Beyoncé and Sam Smith to the curb by taking the “Album of the Year” trophy. This was a triumph in the ever-raging battle between art and commerce, for “Morning Phase” is a finely crafted, beautifully recorded collection of songs, an album that has “timeless” written all over it. That Prince was the man who handed out the award – “Albums – remember those?” he asked, with that million-dollar smirk on his face – made the victory all the more sweet, for Prince is the poster child for the “art matters more than mainstream success” argument. (Prince, in fact, released two albums this year, and both are more deserving of a Grammy than the efforts of Smith and Beyoncé combined, but I digress.)

Prince went on to offer the best line of the night, before handing Beck his award for the year’s best album:

“Like books and black lives, albums still matter.”

I'm thinking of the children watching. Madonna even toned it down. I don't remember her bulls twerking or her - or did I miss that? Madonna is a very innovative, talented artist. She is one of a kind. I admire her for taking care of herself. One should not have resort to taking their clothes off to show that they can sing, write, dance, or play an instrument. I think it has gotten way out of hand when a band of musicians don't get the recognition they deserve when performing. Times have changed, but Sunday gave some light on how it used to be. I love every kind of music, and appreciate what goes into it. Jazz is one that hardly receives any recognition unless it is incorporated into a pop song somehow. With that, I would like to thank Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for their outstanding number. Luv and peace!

I DVR'ed the GRAMMYS and watched it the following day...It was Ballad-heavy...They had a great crowd but the Entertainment Director/Producer dropped the ball with all those Ballads...I Love Madge but I did not like that song. Sam Smith always looks like a "Deer in headlights" but I predict 2-5yrs from now he'll OWN the stage...White Brit-Brotha can Sing...He even won an NAACP Image award Friday night before the GRAMMYS..Annie Lennox ROCKED and she probably was the only highlight...Oh and once again Lady GaGa did her thing with the ICON Crooner...She was "playing" around up there, not even breaking a sweat..There is nothing else I can say about GaGa, she is in her own Vocal-category..Next year they need NEW Producers and everything...The show was a snoozefest this year...

There really should be more Ed Sheeran love.

Most critics are upset that Herbie Hancock was relgated to also-ran status and that's understandable but they're taking away from what was truly the most soulful and groovy performance of the night.

while flawed, the acdc opening was great... seeing gaga etc rocking out to this band warmed my heart... angus' guitar playing was fine... they did what they do... straight ahead, no bullshit rock

kanye... i watched a little... then skipped it

Annie stole the show, yes, no doubt. But damn that Hozier song is strong, particularly lyrically. I've checked out a few more of his jams and that seems to be his strong suit. That was his band playing through that entire performance, too, and they were solid.

Nice festival! Have fun. I'll be at weekend one of Coachella and Outside Lands, the latter of which is local for me, still trying to decide if I want to break my Bonnaroo cherry this year or not (I've been invited, just don't think I'm feeling the lineup enough to spend a week in Tennessee).

I forgot to comment on Gaga... which was probably not accidental. I completely disagree with you in every way possible. I thought she was trying to hard, looked out of place and was extremely distracting. I've said before, she can sing, and she can play (I've seen her do both), but artistically and musically she does absolutely nothing positive for me.

Man there is A LOT of great acts playing that festival. I started to list some favorites, but there's just too many of them. GREAT festival for rock/guitar music for sure. I haven't seen Gypsy Kings in years, but the last time I saw them they were still GREAT! Zac Brown Band kills it live. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, awesome. Gary Clark Jr., awesome. Rodrigo y Gabriela, shiiiit. Lenny Kravitz, well duh! Great festival.

Apparently her anxiety disorder got worse over the years. That's the only way she feels she can do it anymore.

To be honest, I think part of the reason why she does it is because she's so much older than the other "new" female artists around. Maybe a bit "cruel" comment, but it's hard to escape that thought.

I think it's pretty ridiculous. Just be a recording artist if you can't bring yourself to perform live. Thousands of people do it that way anyway, because they're not confident enough as live musicians.

I totally agree on this point. Best part of the show. Hozier's song didn't grow on me...first time I heard it it hit me like a brick.

The official video is heartbreaking and poignant. Just don't read the hateful homophobic comments on YouTube. ugh He also has a video explaining the lyrics and I gained much respect for him after listening. Many people think it's a love song, and many people think it actually means 'go to church.' I had someone on Facebook share it who is extremely religious and anti-gay. I think she didn't bother to watch or read the words.

I forgot to comment on Ariana Grande's GRAMMY performance..The FIRST time I ever heard of her was last year through The Org...I peeped her out during her Live performance at the White House and I felt her vocals were "decent" but nothing to make me buy her CD's...Then came GRAMMY night...All Ariana did on that stage was "warble" and sang like she was chewing on tobacco...She's a Beautiful young Lady to look at, but all this hype about her being the 2nd coming of Mariah Carey is BOGUS..Mariah-like, she is not...

Wow. I feel like I watched a different perfomance. I had no problem hearing him and commented to the people I was watching with that his little runs in between the lyrics were interesting and classy. I thought he had a big presence in the song. Also thought he was clearly enjoying himself. He smiled several times, a particularly big one during Mayer's solo.
