What Would You Consider To Be The Beatles Most Overrated Album??

For me, it would have to be The Beatles (self-titled) [a.k.a The White Album]. That album always sounds as if they're trying too hard imo [I still like the album....I just don't love it]. Which would you fellow orgers say you weren't as crazy about that many others seem to be??

I've actually never heard anything Pre-Rubber Soul. lol The early stuff never appealed to me. I guess I was referring to their more artsy mature stuff. lol

For me it's Sgt Pepper's, hands down.

This because it's often rated the BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME. And I'm just...cold to this thing.

Maybe it's the songs that don't grab me? I like "Day in the Life", or whatever the last song is, and second place...????

Goodmorning Goodmoring? Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite? Ug. When I'm 64??? I don't want to listen to any of those, ever. EVER!

Even "With a Little Help of my friends", a good song, is sung tweely by Ringo, and I am just bewildered by the whole thing.

Agreed. I've warmed to it and understand the cultural significance but most of their other albums have more songs that I love.

To me the early stuff is way underrated - like yourself a lot of people disregard it. A Hard Days Night is a great album - the energy in their earlier stuff has always amazed me.

One of my favourite bands ever but I've long felt that too many critics overlook their flaws. While both Revolver and Sgt. Pepper are pop masterpieces (to my ears at least) all the other albums contain songs that are less than stellar, so most of them are overrated to some degree.

I remember looking through the Rolling Stone Album Guide in a shop and every Beatles album except Help and Yellow Submarine was given five stars. I then looked at the Michael Jackson section and saw that Dangerous had been awarded a mere two stars. I laughed, replaced the book and left the shop being reminded of how blind to reality music critics are when it comes to the Liverpool lads.

Yeah, they were great, but they weren't perfect.

my favorite album ever.

Yes, I think Sgt. Pepper's - overrated. Good album and I like it, but I don`t think it`s sooo great.
I love the Beatles, and really think they are the greatest, but when Rolling Stones magazine included in the list of the greatest albums ever 4 Beatles albums in the top 10 - it was really ridiculously biased. innocent

I would say Sgt. Peppers. It is a great album in the context of its era, and of tremendous importance, but I just don’t understand how it gets consistently rated as the best album ever.

I don’t think the White Album is especially overrated, because aside from rabid Beatles fans, people tend to hit it with as much negative criticism as positive.

The reason The Beatles albums, esp. Sgt. Pepper's are always ranked so high on greatest album lists is because of their innovations, influence, historical importance, etc.. which is what lists like Rolling Stone's are based on. I think they deserve the praise they get as far as all that stuff goes, and so I wouldn't really call any of them 'overrated' as the OP said, but I just don't like their 'psychedelic' albums.. I don't like psychedelic music at all.

I understand the motivation.
but there are some other innovative albums and original artists.
I understand 2 albums in the top 10, but 4!? eek
too much good music for such an overwhelming presence.

I think that Revolver is an excellent album with several truly great songs, but towards the end of the album, tracks like Doctor Robert, I Want to Tell You and Got to Get You Into My Life are not that awesome imo (always thought the album sags here and EWF's version of the latter was superior to the original), though things are redeemed by Tomorrow Never Knows, one of their all time greats.

For me, their single greatest album has to be Abbey Road, it just has a sweep and sonic richness which the others generally lack and the suite on side 2 is glorious. Though, I think Sgt Pepper has actually been underrated in the last 10 years or so in favour of Revolver and the White Album. I think the '90's indie rock crowd were most vocal in their praise of Revolver above all other Beatles releases. If the Beatles had put out a double LP of the material from Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, imo that would have been their greatest album.

On a side note, I think the 'remix' album Love is underrated (bar the pointless virtually identical versions of things like Yesterday and Black Bird) and for me just reinforces the invention, song-writing and sonic brilliance of the Beatles from 1966-69.

It also amuses me that most of their early albums are not regarded as great classics and it took the Beatles about 6 or 7 albums to become truly 'great' and yet these days, it is a (modern) artist's very early albums that are normally regarded as their greatest and most stuff after an artist's first few years is dismissed as not as good as the early stuff. On this logic, the Beatles would have been dropped after Help! ! biggrin

The lyrics of Doctor Rober may not be great but the song is well made. And I love Paul's voice on Got To Get You Into My Life so I disagree about those two.

Agreed. The songs just are not up to the standard they set with Rubber Soul/Revolver.

half of TB albums are overrated, one way or another

first album= thin production, too many silly lyrics, dreadful cover

beatles for sale= good "depression" album, but certainly not a masterpiece

help= a couple of fillers and a couple of very silly songs, like Act Naturally

magical mystery tour= a hodgepodge of previous early-67 singles, just-ok new songs for the movie or other random tracks, like All U Need is Love; not bad, just...messy

The Beatles White Album= filler, too long, and where's Hey Jude?

Abbey Road= some songs are painfully boring, specially "the segue" of Side-B, and the semi-hidden final track Her Majesty is bollocks

their best albums are still

With the Beatles

A Hard Day's Night

Rubber Soul

Revolver

Sgt.Peppers

and I think that neither Yellow Subarime nor Let it Be are underrated masterpieces or overrated albums

It may be my favorite too. They made some really really great songs. The weird thing to me is that, for the most part, I always kind of found some of Paul McCartney's songs [that he actually sung] to be rather corny. lol Not all of them [obviously]. He [imo] would always bring the cornball to the albums. I know him & Lennon were really a great songwriting duo, but Lennon rarely ever came off corny to me with the songs he chose to sing lead on....

When Paul's vocals were good they were best of all The Beatles. When they weren't good they were just as bad as Ringo's.

He really should have just shut his mouth and drummed lol . This reminds me of earlier today. I went to this vinyl shop and there's always a big Beatles section which has all the Beatles and Beatles solo work albums. About 70% of the stuff in the section were Ringo albums lol

falloff I TOTALLY agree! I've heard a few interesting samples pulled from his albums by beatmakers though....so I guess [in some strange way] it's okay? confused lol
