Probably the last one for me. This thread is freezing my browser for a good five minutes. Been fun. Really great idea. If there's a '500 Songs: Part Deux', I'll see you there.

Also, this is the song I'd like to be listening to WHILE dieing. I'd definitely go peacefully.

453) Miles Davis - Right Off

John McLaughlin has stated that he spontaneously started playing the straight-ahead rock shuffle "Right Off" and that Miles, characteristically, went with it; in any case, this song is the closest thing to pure rock music Miles ever attempted. Drummer Cobham pounds out a simple (for him) backbeat and bassist Henderson just grooves along in a manner no jazz bassist ever could. It's too simple; jazz fingers would stray. Miles had told McLaughlin to play like he didn't know how to play guitar, and at this he fails miserably. He does succeed, though, in sounding unlike himself in many ways, sticking mostly to chordal comping and avoiding the dazzling signature metronomic runs he'd make so famous with Mahavishnu. His chords, though, aren't exactly Pete Townshend power chords, but rather a virtual guitarist's workbook of alternate voicings and substitutions. Miles' trumpet on this song is essential listening for any connoisseur of his playing: there's no trace of the pensive, sighing, squeaking hinge of previous acoustic recordings. Instead he offers pure power: blasting, thrusting runs of open horn. Miles' chops were in excellent shape at this time and he excels technically in long, exploratory, almost vicious soloing. That said, there is sensitivity and subtlety in his bent notes and slurs.

Davis turned to 19-year-old Michael Henderson. He hired Henderson from Stevie Wonder's band, going backstage at a gig in New York to tell the singer, "I'm takin' your fuckin' bass player," and calling on him at rehearsals, leaving Wonder's horn section speechless. Henderson, with a background in Motown, had barely heard of Davis. That would soon change. "He flew me into New York and I stayed over at his house," he remembers. "He cooked me some of his cow tongue, white fish gumbo with shrimps, potatoes, and all these herbs and spices. It was an incredible dish."

The following day, he, drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist John McLaughlin and others gathered in Davis's living room for rehearsals: "But what we played there was completely different from what we played in the studio the very next day." What they played was Right Off, the incendiary jam that opens Jack Johnson. "John started playing and I answered that and then Billy [Cobham] joined in. We were just warming up like fighters do to get ready for what we'd done the day before. It was a hell of a groove, and the next thing I know Miles is out playing with us. And we just kept on playing."

The result was one of Davis's great solos, going the full 15 rounds against bass, drums and guitar, as rock'n'roll as it gets but with Davis's fierce musical intelligence guiding the performance around him. "He had conversations with everyone he worked with," remembers Henderson. "What not to do, look out for this, but be yourself and just listen to it. He'd say, 'Here it is, this is the way I see it, but you do what you do.' "

464) Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness...

Although his career was relatively brief, cut short by a tragic plane crash, Otis Redding was a singer of such commanding stature that to this day he embodies the essence of soul music in its purist form. His name is synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying. Redding left behind a legacy of recordings made during the four-year period from his first sessions for Stax/Volt Records in 1963 until his death in 1967.

In concert, Redding routinely incited pandemonium through the thunderous intensity of his performances, which included vocal ad-libs and false endings - devices that were evident in his memorable rendition of “Try a Little Tenderness” at the Monterey International Pop Festival on June 17, 1967. Redding stole the show at Monterey, as a wide-eyed new audience - the youthful counterculture - enthusiastically opened up to him.

472) Dr.John The Night Tripper - Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya

Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford.

A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison, Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' infamous Exile On Main St. to name a few.

Rebennack started thinking of New Orleans and a story he'd heard about a 19th century medicine man, who was revered by the poor and feared by the well-to-do. His name was said to be John Montaigne or, more commonly, Dr. John.

In 1969, Rebennack released a thematic album called Gris Gris based on the Dr. John character. The record was a mixture of rhythm and blues, jazz and voodoo chants in a Creole dialect. The album was recorded quickly by a group of expatriate New Orleans musicians during leftover studio time between Sonny & Cher sessions. For Rebennack, the hardest part was stepping out front to do the lead vocals.

I was supposed to be asleep so that I could get up for school the next morning.
But the lights were out and I had my trusty transistor radio on under the pillow when this track came on the Free Form FM station.
Outside of seeing some older women catch the Holy Ghost for the first time in my Grandmother's church, probably my scariest musical experience to that point.

It's too bad that many only know him for Right Place, Wrong Time.
