400) Roxy Music - The Main Thing

Beginning with the transitional 1975 release Siren, through Manifesto (1979) and Flesh Blood (1980), Roxy Music began moving away from the dense, artful chaos of earlier creative peaks (like Country Life and Stranded) and started fashioning a sleek, elegant sound that possessed an exotically atmospheric sensuality, culminating in their 1982 swan song, Avalon.

For eons, my favorite cuts on "Avalon" were the opener, "More Than This," and the second side slow burner, "To Turn You On." Then, suddenly, I flipped for the second side opener, "The Main Thing." It's rock, it's dance, it's industrial, it's otherworldly! Whatever the essence of the track is, it's not contained in movies, televisions or books, it's something you feel, as if you've being injected with a serum that inspires you and alters your perception of the world. And no drugs are required!

409) Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street...

Four days after Newport, Dylan got his revenge on the "folk crowd" who rejected him (and who had been attacking him, baiting him, condescending to him since the release of Another Side of Bob Dylan twelve months earlier), by recording "Positively Fourth Street" as his single to follow "Like a Rolling Stone." The song functions as a kind of universal put-down, "the perfect squelch," but it also speaks quite specifically to Dylan's critics in the folk community (Dylan lived on West 4th Street in Greenwich Village in his folk days), particularly Irwin Silber, editor or Sing Out!, who wrote a piece in the November 1964 issue of Sing Out! called "An Open Letter to Bob Dylan": "Dear Bob . . . I'm writing this letter now because some of what has happened is troubling me. And not me alone. Many other good friends of yours as well..." And so forth. Dylan over the years has had to put up with an endless succession of public admonitions from "friends" and strangers telling him what he should be doing; this song serves as his permanent, all-purpose reply (especially for those who think "Maggie's Farm" and "It Ain't Me Babe" aren't addressed to them). On the videotape of the December 1965 press conference, someone tells Dylan he's hard on people in a lot of his songs -- "Rolling Stone," and "Fourth Street" -- and asks, "Are you hard on them because you want to torment them, or because you want to change their lives and make them know themselves?" Dylan screws up his face into a very serious and rather demonic grin and says, "I want to needle them."

You got a lotta nerve

To say you are my friend

When I was down

You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve

To say you got a helping hand to lend

You just want to be on

The side that’s winning

You say I let you down

You know it’s not like that

If you’re so hurt

Why then don’t you show it

You say you lost your faith

But that’s not where it’s at

You had no faith to lose

And you know it

I know the reason

That you talk behind my back

I used to be among the crowd

You’re in with

Do you take me for such a fool

To think I’d make contact

With the one who tries to hide

What he don’t know to begin with

You see me on the street

You always act surprised

You say, “How are you?” “Good luck”

But you don’t mean it

When you know as well as me

You’d rather see me paralyzed

Why don’t you just come out once

And scream it

No, I do not feel that good

When I see the heartbreaks you embrace

If I was a master thief

Perhaps I’d rob them

And now I know you’re dissatisfied

With your position and your place

Don’t you understand

It’s not my problem

I wish that for just one time

You could stand inside my shoes

And just for that one moment

I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time

You could stand inside my shoes

You’d know what a drag it is

To see you

The ultimate dress-down, F-You song to any and all fake friends.

And phonies in general for that matter.

Razor-like lyrics without having to resort to profanity.

415) Family Affair - Sly & The Family Stone

One child grows up to be somebody that just loves to learn, yeah

Another child grows up to be somebody we just love to burn
Mom loves the both of them

You see it's in the blood

Both kids are good to Mom

Blood's thicker than the mud

It's a family affair

I swear that's the storyline of damn near every black-themed movie over the past 40 years lol...
blah.

416) Joey DeFrancesco & Bobby Hutcherson - I Thought About You...

“I Thought About You” was among the first tunes that lyricist Johnny Mercer collaborated on with composer Jimmy Van Heusen. Mercer had just become a partner with Edwin H. Morris and formed Mercer-Morris. In Gene Lees’ biography, Portrait of Johnny: The Life of John Herndon Mercer, the author relates Mercer’s tale of writing the tune. Van Heusen played the melody for Mercer, who was leaving that evening for Chicago to appear on a radio program with Benny Goodman. Unable to sleep, Mercer found inspiration for the song from the train trip, seeing the little towns, the moon and landscape along the way. Mercer admitted his writing style was to paint pictures with lyrics, to “transport people to someplace they don’t know.” The story is a marvelous example of how a fine lyricist like Mercer could find inspiration in something many would consider mundane, a train trip.

Organic Vibes is the kind of album jazz nuts will share with novices, so the uninitiated can understand the power and presence of the musical form. It's a miraculous album because while the musicians adhere to the standard format of short songs suitable for airplay, they are able to pack a huge bundle of superbly crafted notes in very small packages. In a way, it would have been cool listening to longer versions of these songs and seeing exactly where they’d end up given more interplay between the players, but this isn’t very important. DeFrancesco and his band have achieved perfection with Organic Vibes, and a critic would be foolish trying to argue with that.

The inspired choice of Hutcherson for this project came about from an early encounter the two had in Pittsburgh. “About three years ago we played together at the Craftsman’s Guild,” explains Joey. “It was a special band that was put together for that event. Of course, I’ve been listening to him forever and have always loved his playing on all those early '60s Blue Note records. We really hit it off good at this gig. Then last summer I was in Chicago and went to see Bobby at the Jazz Showcase. After hearing his set, I though to myself, ‘Man, I wanna make a record with this guy.’ I actually asked him that night and he said, ‘Sure, give me a call.’ I’m so pleased that it happened. Bobby is one of the true innovators in this music.”

On the recorded version of the song (from Joey's Organic Vibes album), after the last note dies away, you hear Bobby in the background say, "If you don't like that, you don't like ice cream!" followed by a wicked laugh.
As great a lyricist as Johhny Mercer is, this may be one case where Jimmy Van Heusen's melody/music holds the trump card as evidenced by the number of instrumental versions (Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Burrell, etc) as well as vocal covers (Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, etc).
In any case, the combination of individual musical skills with a sensitivity to the song makes this one a joy to listen to repeatedly.

For those curious about the lyrics...

I took a trip on the train

And I thought about you,

I passed a shadowy lane

And I thought about you

Two or three cars parked under the stars

A winding stream

Moon shining down on some little town

And with each beam, same old dream

At every stop that we made

Oh, I thought about you

But when I pulled down the shade

Then I really felt blue

I peeked through the crack

And looked at the track

The one going back to you

And what did I doI thought about you

Music for adventurous listeners

417. The Ink Spots - If I Didn't Care

Fred G. Sanford ( John E. Sanford, Foxx's given name ) brought me here biggrin . There are several clips on the TUBE where the group is all together singing but with a different lead. No funk faking as I don't know the true original line up so I'll just post the clip of the song on its own.

p.s.... My own mother was not yet alive when this song was out and my father was only two, damn that's a long time ago. Curiosity killed the cat, Bill Kenney is the singer, Orville " Hoppy " Jones is the speaking man.
