Despite 'Unity' concert, Jackson family feud simmers

By Alan Duke, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Randy Jackson remains on the attack against the men who run the Michael Jackson estate
  • "I AM SO AFRAID FOR MY MOTHER..." Randy Jackson tweeted
  • Estate lawyer sent e-mail banning Janet, Jermaine, Randy, Rebbie from mom's home
  • "Katherine Jackson is completely free to talk to whomever she chooses," lawyer says

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Last week began with a missing persons report filed for Katherine Jackson but ended with Michael Jackson's mother attending a "Unity" concert by four of her sons.

In the days between, a complex family feud played out in headlines and on celebrity TV.

The 82-year-old Jackson family matriarch lost custody of the late pop icon's three children, who were placed into the guardianship of their cousin TJ Jackson, the 34-year-old son of Tito Jackson.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff suspended her as the children's custodian, saying she may be "prevented from acting as a guardian because of the acts of third parties."

Four of her children -- including Janet, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie Jackson -- had taken their mother to an Arizona spa, but kept her whereabouts secret from their other siblings and Michael Jackson's children -- Prince, 15; Paris, 14; and Prince Michael II, 10, who's also known as Blanket.

Those involved called it an intervention to protect their mother from people abusing her, while Paris and Prince Jackson made it clear they thought their aunts and uncles were trying to gain influence and control over Katherine Jackson.

When Paris didn't hear from her grandmother for over a week, she tweeted "8 days and counting . something is really off , this isn't like her at all .. i wanna talk directly to my grandmother!!<|3"

Katherine Jackson returned home early last Thursday to find a house in turmoil.

"Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realized how misguided and how badly she was lied to," Prince Jackson said in bitter Twitter posting attacking his aunts and uncles. "I'm really angry and hurt."

There was a "scuffle" inside Katherine Jackson's Calabasas, California, home last Monday after Randy, Jermaine and Janet approached Michael Jackson's children in what witnesses said was an attempt to convince them to leave with them. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies broke it up and filed a battery report, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Despite a relative calm in the Jackson family feud that set in over the weekend, youngest son Randy Jackson remained on the attack Monday against the men who run the Michael Jackson estate, accusing them of trying to isolate his mother so they could control the heirs they are obligated by law to protect.

"And THIS IS WHY I AM SO AFRAID FOR MY MOTHER..." he said in a Twitter posting that linked to a story on the website of CNN contributor Roland Martin titled: "Janet Jackson, Others Family Members Barred From Mom's California Home."

Martin wrote on RolandMartinReports.com about an e-mail sent by estate lawyer Howard Weitzman to the lawyer for TJ Jackson just hours after Beckloff appointed him guardian of Michael Jackson's children.

"Given the circumstances of the last two weeks, and in order to protect the children and Mrs. Jackson, the Executors believe that it would not be appropriate to allow the following individuals to enter the residence or its grounds and we instruct the security to preclude the following from entering the residence or the grounds: Randy Jackson and any of his children, Janet Jackson, Rebbie Jackson and any of her children, Jermaine Jackson, his wife and any of his children, Janice Smith, or anyone else who was involved in the recent events that led to Mrs. Jackson's separation from and inability to communicate with Michael's children, or any agents or representatives of any of these individuals," Weitzman wrote.

The e-mail was "given to the security is in compliance with Judge Beckloff's order and is not arbitrary," Schultz said.

"As for the family members who are on that list, they were either at the house on Monday, July 23, 2012 or in someway participated in the events surrounding that date," Charles Schultz, TJ Jackson's lawyer, said in reply to Martin's story.

"Katherine Jackson is completely free to talk to whomever she chooses and is free to come and go from the house with anyone whom she chooses," Schultz said. "This has been made completely clear to Mrs. Jackson and she has acknowledged that fact."

If Janet, Randy, Jermaine of Rebbie Jackson want to talk to their mother, who they took on an unannounced 10-day vacation to Arizona earlier this month, they can call her, he said.

"If anything, it sounds like the people who tried to manipulate her previously are continuing to do so via telephone," Schultz wrote.

The list of people banned from the property was prepared by estate lawyers and sent at the request of TJ Jackson after "certain members of the Jackson family showed up unannounced at the ... residence of Michael Jackson's mother and children, causing a very public disturbance," according to a statement by the estate lawyers.

"The list may be amended and managed by TJ Jackson Jr. or the Estate when appropriate," the estate statement said.

Katherine Jackson's lawyer is preparing a court filing to ask Judge Beckloff to restore her as guardian of Michael Jackson's children through a plan where TJ Jackson would be a co-guardian.

Prince, Paris and Blanket approved of the arrangement, Katherine Jackson lawyer Perry Sanders said.

"Mrs. Jackson is extremely pleased with the prospect of enjoying the pleasure of raising Michael's children without the day-to-day tedium of items such as managing the large staff that goes with such a high profile family and focus her attention on being a grandmother and raising Michael's children," Sanders said.

The plan must still be approved by Judge Beckloff, who could put provisions into the custody order designed to prevent a repeat of this month's incidents.

For folks saying Michael distanced himself away from his family because they were

a)always trying to use him

or

b)trying to help him

Katherine and Joe always had contact with him. I remember on TMZ, MJ was living in vegas and it Michael Jr's birthday and of course, TMZ had their people outside his house when out of the blue, there's Joe Jackson with presents in tow, quietly going to the house. When the AEG deal was going down, Michael brought Joe with him to the meeting

Over the years, it was Jermaine and LaToya who he kept a distance from although as years went by, that changed. Randy was his manager and in charge of Michael's website during the trial, but that ended badly.....REAL BADLY

Jermaine said "fuck a security" and got to Michael. He also worked on music with him before he passed. Jermaine did hook him up with Thome Thome though....

LaToya.....nuff said lol

So it's not like he shut himself from the entire family, but after being burned (no pun intended) on occasion, could you blame him or Janet or any of them if they decided to keep a distance or stay out of the family drama?

Hell, we could've had a Jackson 5 reunion album in 1998 if Randy and Jermaine weren't beefing and the other brothers were taking sides lol

Those were just two incidents that you mentioned with Joe. Michael himself has said he wasnt that close with the Joe but he eventually started to be more open to communication in his later years. Im sure their are some interactions with Joe but I highly doubt he wasnt talking to him as much as he was with Katherine and that by any means doesnt mean they were close. I just think people are saying he wasnt all that close with his father and he wasnt. Maybe that changed in 09 but for majority of his life that is how it has always been.

Michael had different eras where he was close with certain family members. During the 80s Michael was exactly closed with La Toya it was just when she started to act crazy in the 90s Michael started to distanced himself and likewise in the 80s with Jermaine when he made that song. Michael appeared close with Randy during the trial but we all know that eventually changed. I believe despite Janet defending Michael in 93 and doing a song.. she was the closet with him when they were little and no other time. I think Michael was the closest with Marlon when they were growing up but of course their were times they had encounters but having some encounters on some occassions doesnt mean your a close family or close with that sibling.

To me a close sibling or close families have a on going communication it doesnt necessarily have to be physical contact but they are all talking to each other and see each other more than often. The family mostly talks to Katherine if they want to get current information about what each of them are up to..

Jackson estate limits access to home amid feud

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's estate has acknowledged it has limited some relatives' access to the home shared by the singer's mother and children in the wake of a family feud that turned into a driveway argument last week.

The estate's statement released Monday afternoon does not specify which members of Jackson's family are no longer allowed at the home and says the list is subject to change. The statement says an approved guest list was requested by an attorney for TJ Jackson, the son of Tito Jackson who was appointed temporary guardian of the children last week.

"It is imperative to the estate that from this point forward a safe and appropriate environment be provided for Michael Jackson's children and his mother," the statement reads. The children and Katherine Jackson live in a gated community in suburban Calabasas that is more private than the family's longtime home in Encino, which is on a public street.

The statement was issued in response to an online report by journalist Roland Martin that Jackson's siblings Randy, Janet and Jermaine have been blocked from visiting the home. The trio was present in a July 23 scuffle that the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is still investigating as a possible battery.

The Jackson siblings followed a vehicle carrying Jackson's children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, through security gates and "ambushed" the children and their caretakers, an attorney for family matriarch Katherine Jackson said last week. The elder Jackson was out of contact with the children for roughly 10 days while at an Arizona spa, which prompted a missing person's report and concerns about her health.

TJ Jackson, the late singer's nephew, plans to become a co-guardian in an agreement reached last week after Katherine Jackson returned to the home.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said last week that TJ Jackson would take over day-to-day operations and staff oversight at the Calabasas home. The move will free Katherine Jackson to focus on the upbringing of the children, who range in ages from 10 to 15, Sanders said.

Siblings Randy, Janet, Rebbie and Jermaine Jackson have signed a letter calling on the executors of Jackson's estate to resign. Randy Jackson has accused the executors, attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain, of trying to isolate Katherine Jackson from relatives who are critical of them.

"It is my fear and belief, that they are trying to take my mother's life," Randy Jackson wrote last week.

Randy Jackson has also claimed his brother's will is a fake, a claim the estate denies

Why Janet Jackson became embroiled in family feud involving Michael's kids

By STACY BROWN

Even the most dysfunctional families have their sane one, and in the famously chaotic Jackson clan, that member has always been Janet.

Until now.

This past week, the family feuded publicly over the late Michael’s estate, with his children taking to Twitter to accuse their Aunt Janet and others of kidnapping their grandmother and legal guardian, Katherine, in order to wrest away control of the King of Pop’s fortune.

At the public memorial service for Michael on July 7, 2009, it was Janet who soothed an emotional Paris, then just 11 years old, as she tearfully remembered her father as “the best daddy,” and it was into Janet’s arms she flew after emotionally collapsing.

Nearly three years to the day, things are quite different. Last Monday, 14-year-old Paris Jackson not only defied her 46-year-old Aunt Janet but also defied the way the Jackson family has traditionally operated: Instead of keeping this latest family feud private, Paris, frantic over her relatives’ refusal to let her speak to her grandma, took to Twitter and declared matriarch Katherine missing.

The national media were quick to go on red alert, and Janet was caught on camera confronting her niece in the driveway of Katherine’s estate.

“You’re a spoiled little bitch!” Janet yelled.

“This is our house,” Paris shot back. “Not the Jackson family house. Get the f--k out!”

On Thursday, Paris’ brother Prince Michael, 15, posted a text message he’d sent to several relatives, including his famous aunt, listed in his iPhone simply as “Janet Jackson.”

“This is enough,” it read, “so I am texting you for the simple fact that WE DEMAND TO SPEAK TO MY GRANDMA NOW!!!”

Janet’s reply was terse: “Don’t let them pls.”

What’s happened to Janet Jackson? How is it that the seemingly calmest, most soft-spoken sibling could be so vicious to her niece and nephews?

Why would a woman who launched her solo career by publicly emancipating herself from her overbearing family — her 1986 breakthrough album was called “Control” — allow herself to become enmeshed in such an ugly family feud? And why would Janet — the only one of 10 Jackson siblings to have a career nearly as successful as Michael’s — allow her image to be tarnished this way?

One Jackson family member tells The Post the answer is simple: It’s all about money. She’s got some; Michael’s estate has more — Billboard recently estimated its net worth at $1 billion — and her siblings have none. She lives in fear of supporting them.

“Janet’s last three tours have failed to sell tickets, and she’s cut each of them short,” the sibling says. “She hasn’t had a hit record in more than a decade, and she no longer has a recording contract.”

This family member says that Janet’s net worth is estimated at $100 million but that “she only has money going out and nothing new coming in.”

Janet hasn’t had a hit song since 2001’s “Someone to Call My Lover,” and the last time she had any cultural relevance was in February 2004, after Justin Timberlake exposed her breast during their Super Bowl performance.

She’s starred in a couple of Tyler Perry films, but lately her brand has been defined by her yo-yo dieting (she’s a spokeswoman for Nutrisystem) and struggles with self-actualization. Her 2011 self-help book, “True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself,” was a best seller, ironic given that she hasn’t been able to detach fully from her destructive family — especially older brother Randy, whom she is said to worship.

“Janet has nothing to do,” her sibling says. “And she is devoted to any cause Randy takes up.”

It was Randy, says this sibling, who hatched the plan to remove Katherine from the Jackson home, challenge Michael’s will, remove the children from Katherine’s legal custody and ultimately gain control of the estate.

“Randy thought that if they were to publicly show that [Katherine] was no longer capable of caring for the children and no longer able to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the house, then Randy could take her position.”

Randy, now 50, enlisted his sister Rebbie, 62, brothers Jermaine, 58, and Tito, 60, and Janet, the sibling says. The coup’s ultimate aim: to overthrow Michael’s estate executors, John Branca and John McClain.

With that, Randy would control the $70,000 monthly allowance Katherine gets from the estate and the $100,000 the children get.

About two weeks ago, Randy pushed the button on the plan.

Four of the Jackson siblings — Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon — were doing a concert in New Mexico. Randy coordinated with Katherine’s assistant, Janice Smith, to have the 82-year-old matriarch ready for “a long vacation.”

A doctor hired by the siblings was brought in to visit with Katherine and promptly told her she needed rest, the family member says. The siblings kept her isolated from outside contact, busying her with games of Uno while Jermaine issued statements that his mother had suffered a series of strokes and needed rest.

One can only wonder what the Janet of 1986 — scared, free, struggling to carve her own persona — would make of today’s Janet, back in league with her tormenters against McClain.

And yet, not all is well with her siblings. Janet has fought viciously with La Toya, Jermaine and Jackie.

In 2001, Janet bought a Las Vegas home for her mother with the stipulation that family patriarch Joe Jackson never be allowed to live there, according to Rebbie Jackson.

“She never forgave Joseph for what he did to us when we were children. She doesn’t deal with him at all,” Rebbie said.

While Janet has helped pay bills for her mother in the past and paid her brother Marlon’s mortgage for a full year and moved him to Atlanta, she has mostly been careful about helping her siblings with their cash problems.

“They need to get jobs if they think I’m going to do what Michael did for them. They are grown-ass men. I’m not giving them nothing,” Janet said, according to this family member.

While Janet’s relationship with Michael appeared close, the siblings were one another’s biggest rivals. Michael even once asked Janet to stop using her surname when she performed.

It wasn’t until after repeated pleas from Katherine Jackson that Janet went to a Santa Maria, Calif., courthouse to show support for Michael during his child-molestation trial in 2005.

While Janet’s fortune remains stable, she fears for her security should she find herself supporting eight siblings and their families.

While Michael was in hiding in Bahrain following his acquittal, Janet started paying Katherine’s bills and giving her siblings money. But she has begun to cut them off.

Randy and Jermaine, who have children by the same woman, had previously requested that the estate pay their back child support, something Branca ultimately approved. Randy once owed as much as $150,000 to his ex.

Since Michael’s death in 2009, Branca and McClain have worked miracles to alleviate the $500 million debt left by the legend. The estate owns a share in Sony/ATV music publishing, which contains all of Jackson’s hits and the prized Beatles catalog. It is said to be worth upward of $2 billion. The bulk of it will go to Jackson’s three children: Paris, Prince Michael and 10-year-old Blanket.

If Janet doesn’t support her brothers, the estate could.

“It is a fact that the primary reason Janet got involved in Randy’s plan,” says a sibling, “is because she wants to see her brothers control Michael’s money so they won’t come to her anymore.”

After Prince tweeted that his late father had warned him about “certain people,” the family member said one of those people was Janet. Often calling her “evil, selfish and cheap,” Michael warned his children that Janet wouldn’t be the best of aunts.

Last week, California Judge Mitchell Beckloff appointed Tito’s son, TJ Jackson, guardian of Prince, Paris and Blanket.

TJ’s mother, Dee Dee Jackson, was murdered in 1994 by a man she’d begun dating after divorcing Tito. Michael took TJ and TJ’s two brothers under his wing. He was part of the Michael Jackson-inspired music group 3T.

As such, TJ is inclined to take the side of Jackson’s kids in disputes and said either Rebbie or Janet had a fake doctor persuade Katherine to leave California.

“I am taking actions that I have deemed appropriate to protect Michael’s children,” TJ said in court.

Janet, it’s clear, will no longer be a part of their lives, and this thwarted plan has eroded her power.

The three children have been reunited with their grandmother and have vowed to stay as far as possible from their aunts and uncles. Janet’s efforts to give her brothers a financial parachute has backfired.

“[The children] will probably never let this go,” says one sibling. “They certainly won’t forget it. And the ones the family members tried to paint as bad guys are the very ones those children will always see as protectors.”

Stacy Brown is a reporter and longtime friend of the Jackson family. (LOL)

Wow. Well ok then! lol Imma make a guess as to who "this family member/sibling/family source" is that Stacy Brown got his info from---was none other than.....

lol lol lol

I think Rebbie is the 'sibling' source. Her and Stacy Brown are close friends. Maybe she is throwing Janet under the bus to keep the attention off of her.

Another way of looking at it is that Michael could have gotten over himself, he could have put on a nice suit like the rest of the family and showed up. No bullshit monkey or Mr. Lewis in tow, or psuedo military themed do dads, or gloves ... and then held a respectful bearing for whatever was at hand for the family member in question and it would have been just fine. At the end of the day Michael only kept himself more shut off from the world by not showing up to his family stuff, he hurt himself the most. Not showing up allowed him to go deeper into the Dr. Murray woods and eventually be harmed. I did not show up for my family. It really was wrong not to do so. I hurt a lot of people's feelings. I shot myself in the foot. I regret not having shown up.

Agreed. Everything MJ ever did, he pulled stunts to maximise media attention. But I guess that's what kept him famous when his quality of music, and popularity took a dive.

The fact that you don't like his music does not mean that it took a dive.

"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Please don't use what I had to say on this occasion to support some agenda other than what I was immediatley addressing. I would appreciate it.

@ass No, I don't. But you know that he usually overshadowed everything... whether he wanted it or not. You just don't want to admit it. Also there was another brother missing at the icon thing, that one didn't even send a video message, as no one gave a shit . And again at that award thing there also was another brother missing. And no one really cared. And LOL @ "chosen".

Edit: But just for the record, I too would have wished he attended both events.

Don't assume that the second and third sentences were in anyway attached to the first.

That is the general concensus by critics, evident in lower ratings, and by people, evident in lower sales.

I can't think of any event where MJ displayed any kind of regular behaviour.

Whether it was a press confrence or attending a trial date.

I really don't care what critics think (I love Invincible) and the album was very successful. Sure the album wasn't another Thriller or even Dangerous, but the fact is album sales were already beginning to drop and the album has sold 13 million worldwide. It also debuted number one in the U.S.

They were there for him when he wanted them:

and she defended him when he paid $ 25 million to a child who accused him of molestation:

But when it was his brothers or sisters time to shine, he was never there:

Here are ALL the Jacksons awarding the brothers for their achievments in the music industry.

or when Janet was crowned the first MTV ICON. Every celebrity in the music industry, including her family was there.

Except Michael, who chose to send in an emotionless 15 second clip:

Blablabla... that's one way to look at it. The other is, that whenever Michael shows up somewhere the show becomes about him. Had he appeared at Janet's icon show, he would have upstaged her at her very own tribute. The same goes for that award the brothers got. Who cares about the brothers or Janet, when Michael is in the building?!

this dont even make sense, all he would have done was walk on stage, the crowd would clap really loud, he'd say a few words they clap some more, then he'd walk off. it would have been great for him to be the one to give janet her award.

And sometimes family is just a cancer you need to cut out. Just because you're born into a family doesn't mean you need to put up with their bullshit. Mike's problem seemed to be that he turned his back on his family for people just like his family members, blood suckers who were only out for themselves. I know a lot of you come from nice, functional families who don't pull shit like this, but some family members think you're supposed to take all their shit and let them bleed you dry just because you all share the same DNA. I wouldn't put up with this behaviour from a stranger or a friend so why should i put up with it from "family"?

The only decline I hear or see is the fact that more people wrote and produced songs on the album than on the others. Other than that I don't really see a decline. I don't think it was until the trial when a decline started (and it happened fast)
