I love it. I was never very fond of the actual cover for Bad.

Listening to some Jacksons' era songs biggrin

While Michael's early self written tracks (Blues Away, That's What You Get For Being Polite, etc.) were quite simple in in a lyrical sense, they have quite a lot of depth

On Blues Away, he sounds like he loves someone and wants to be with them, but no matter what they say, no matter what they do, they can't take this neverending pain and sadness away. Because of that, he won't, he CAN'T let them into his heart and mind....and this was a 17 year old writing this

Songwriting, he went THERE in the 90s, especially with Is This Scary. It's telling the world "You want me to be what you see of me. I'm gonna be the angel, the monster, the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly, but while you're projecting your views on me, maybe you should look into the mirror yourself"

So while he wasn't the GREATEST songwriter of all time, I'd personally rank him as one of the best

but that's just my opinion biggrin

What do you all think of The Weeknd's version of "Dirty Diana"? I actually like it. I'm not too fond of artists remaking MJ songs, but his captures a darkness that just works

MJ is def one of the best songwriters. Thats What You Get shares the same chords as The Girl is Mine. Remember MJ mentioned that back in 84-85 that a few of his unreleased songs share that same chord progression. Is It Scary is one of my favorite MJ records of all time. I love that, Morphine, Superfly Sister, a lot of his darker records

Once again, Lenny Kravitz speaks very highly of Michael Jackson, this time on Piers Morgan Tonight(on CNN) with Lenny Kravitz- aired on Dec 21,2011.

http://transcripts.cnn.co...mt.01.html

MORGAN: Of all of the things that you've experienced in your extraordinary career and life, if I could give you five minutes to replay one of them again, what would it be? What's been the most magical? Forget women or children or births of a child. Obviously, that's different. But what's the career moment where if you had the chance, you'd relive it?

KRAVITZ: The career moment. Wow. You know, I -- I've had so many where I had to pinch myself.

MORGAN: What was the biggest pinch?

KRAVITZ: Being -- probably producing Michael Jackson. And there's been a lot of great ones, but that was something extraordinary.

MORGAN: What made it so extraordinary?

KRAVITZ: Well, the fact that, you know, I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't seen the Jackson Five when I was six years old. That was the first concert that I had ever been to. My father took me to Madison Square Garden to see them. And it changed everything.

The universe was a different place the next day. I was completely blown away by the music, the talent, the whole experience. And here I am in the studio. I had written a song for Michael. And he's standing there, telling me to be very hard on him, I want to do this exactly the way you see it, so stop me every time it's not the way you want it and so forth.

And we're just getting into it. We're working together. And we ended up spending, you know, a week together in the studio. It was just unbelievable.

MORGAN: What kind after man was he? For real.

KRAVITZ: I thought that he, first of all, was just a beautiful being. Extremely professional, a perfectionist. Still having the passion all those years later, you know? He would stay, work all day and night, come back the next day, all day and night. He hadn't lost that.

A great father. He was amazing with his children. I spent time with the kids. We were all in the studio. Zoe would come and we would all hang out together. He was a very good father. And he was funny. Very funny.

MORGAN: Great sense of humor.

KRAVITZ: We laughed all the time. And he could eat more than you think.

MORGAN: Really? He had all of the energy to burn off, all of the dancing.

KRAVITZ: Yeah.

MORGAN: Incredible talent. The greatest I've ever seen.

KRAVITZ: The greatest ever. I would agree with that.

MORGAN: How did you feel when you heard what happened to him? And there's sort of mixed thoughts from people that knew him well, that there was a kind of inevitability in the way his life was going, and that actually for somebody like Michael Jackson -- I don't want this to sound callus -- but actually not getting old may have been something that wouldn't have been his worst nightmare.

KRAVITZ: It was interesting. I heard you speaking to Jane Fonda about that. She had spoken about that. I mean, I was obviously devastated. I was blown away. I found out on stage in Scotland, as I was coming off and getting ready to go back on for an encore. And they told me and I had to go back out.

I mean, I -- it's -- it's extremely sad. I mean, I -- I was really looking forward to seeing him come back and do those shows, even though I knew, like, wow, 50 shows, that's -- that's really serious.

MORGAN: I mean, is his legacy going to be that, of our lifetime -- because you get the older generation saying Sammy Davis pretty well the greatest entertainer of that era, whatever. Do you think of our lifetime, Michael Jackson was the best? KRAVITZ: Of course. You can't touch it.

MORGAN: The greatest naturally gifted, as you said earlier?

KRAVITZ: Yes.

MORGAN: Entertainer of them all?

KRAVITZ: Yes, completely.
I think people -- people think about Michael Jackson and his solo career, which was obviously phenomenal. But the deepest genius I saw him in was when he was a child. I think that he was -- he was a child and he sang with the same talent and soul and intensity of an Aretha Franklin or a James Brown or any great vocalist.

biggrin

Sadly in the days of photoshop and the like I am skeptical of all "rare pressing" and "test pressing" stuff.

But seeing that original track listing is making me rethink a certain playlist - anyone listened to it in that configuration - thoughts?

I played the original track list and it does and doesn't work.

Pros: Streetwalker works really well after Man in the Mirror comes on and Dirty Diana ending the album is a plus also. I love Smooth Criminal but Dirty Diana should've ended the album from the beginning.

Cons: Another Part of Me is gone! My favorite record!

This was the original tracklist before Q and Frank had their debate about Another Part of Me vs Streetwalker. MJ sat low in his chair not giving a damn because he wrote both of them and was going to get paid regardless lol

I still haven't done it yet although I did work a tracklisting

1. Bad (Dance Remix Radio Edit)

2. The Way You make Me Feel (Original Album Mix)

3. Speed Demon (Moonwalker Edit)

4. Liberian Girl (Edit)

5. Just Good Friends

6. Man In The Mirror

7. Streetwalker

8. I Just Can't Stop Loving You (Original Album Mix)

9. Smooth Criminal (Moonwalker Edit)

10. Dirty Diana

That tracklisting in the picture was dated December 1, 1986 so they still had a long way to go. The final mixes for the songs didn't happen until April-May 1987, although I Just Can't Stop Loving You was done in October 1986

thinking about it, I wonder if the original mix of Bad was like the video version with the alternate bridge (the dance break) because I like the video version's bridge way more

Streetwalker is one of my favorite MJ tracks headbang If they ever made a music video for this track, it woulda been pretty similar to Way U Make Me Feel though lol I wonder if Q or MJ thought this track was still a bit "inappropriate" for MJ's image?

Not much different from Billie Jean or Dirty Diana, I don't think that was the reason. I'm glad the intro was used for performances though, and I'm glad it was also in the MJ Experience game, the dance is so cute and easy smile

The doo-doo, doo-doo vocals were taken from Streetwalker, got a key change, and were used for the intros to Heartbreak Hotel, The Way You Make Me Feel and Smooth Criminal on different occasions.
