Michael Jackson's Estate Wants to Keep ThrillingMore than two years after his death, Jackson is still on top. His estate wants to keep him thereLong Live the King: Michael Jackson's executors are intent on pitching the artist to a new generation of fans Ho New/Reuters
More than two years after his death, Michael Jackson is still moonwalking to the bank. Already one of the best-selling artists of all time, the singer was the top-selling act of 2009, thanks to a post-mortem surge in interest in his albums. That raised his career total to more than 750 million records worldwide. This Is It, the backstage look at Jackson’s unrealized final tour, was released four months after his death and became the highest-grossing concert film ever. In the 18 months after his passing, his estate reported that it collected $310 million from music, merchandise sales, and its share of publication rights on a music catalog that includes songs by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Jackson himself.
Now the hard part begins. As unseemly as it may sound, the first year of a celebrity’s death can be a bonanza. “When a star first dies, fans are desperate for just one more performance,” says Mark Young, a University of Southern California professor who specializes in sports and entertainment. Maintaining that buzz could be a challenge for even the King of Pop as fans move on to the next Lady Gaga-du-jour. Jackson wouldn’t be the first king to fade. The Elvis Presley estate, long the gold standard of money-making by dead stars, now has all the earmarks of an aging brand. In 2010 the estate generated $57 million for CKX, which owns the rights to the Elvis name.
Not bad for someone who’s been dead for more than 30 years. Still, tourist visits fell in five of the last six years at Graceland, Presley’s Memphis home, which provides more than half the estate’s revenue. Occupancy at the Heartbreak Hotel next door slid from 80 percent in 2006 to 67 percent in 2010. That’s a reason the estate scrapped plans to develop a hotel and convention center adjoining Graceland, taking a $900,000 write-off. “We learned a lot from the Elvis estate, and we see opportunities,” says John Branca, Jackson’s former lawyer who is co-executor for the estate with music executive John McClain.
Branca has tackled some urgent financial issues. He refinanced $300 million in debt that was pledged against the singer’s 50 percent stake in Sony/ATV, the music catalog behind much of his wealth. The estate paid off Jackson’s $4 million mortgage on the family home in Encino, Calif., and paid $35 million to concert promoter AEG to satisfy debts from the singer’s aborted tour. In all, Jackson’s debt was cut to around $300 million from $500 million. In November the estate was part of a group that agreed to pay $2.2 billion for EMI’s music publishing business, bolstering the revenue stream for its beneficiaries—Jackson’s mother Katherine, his three children, and some unnamed charities. Now, the estate is focusing on projects to keep the Jackson flame alive for long-time fans while introducing younger audiences to his work. Jackson left behind enough music for one more album, according to a person with knowledge of the singer’s business. (A 2010 album of new songs that the estate released sold a half-million copies.) Plans for a biopic film have been shelved, however, until the right script and director come along. The executors can wait: The estate has rights to Jackson’s music, so an unauthorized film is unrealistic.
The estate signed with Ubisoft for a video game Branca hopes will help introduce a new generation to moonwalking like the master. It also paid half the $60 million production cost forMichael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, a show by Cirque du Soleil that opened in October. Rather than backing a show anchored on Broadway or in Las Vegas, Branca opted for a touring show in hopes that fans will bring their kids—who later may become fans themselves. The estate gets half of ticket and merchandise sales plus royalties.
Once The Immortal’s U.S. tour is over, foreign versions will continue. A permanent Cirque show will open in Las Vegas in 2013, along with an interactive museum where fans can dance with the mummies from the Thriller music video. A Broadway show and a tribute concert tour could be next. “There’s a whole generation out there who doesn’t know about Michael and his music,” says Branca. “We’re going to change that.”
The bottom line: Thanks in part to a wave of fan interest, Michael Jackson’s estate was able to trim about $200 million from his debts after his death.

that is the stupidest thing i have ever heard, i believe michael has enough material for 10 more albums of unreleased goods! think about it.. you have got all of the outtakes from each album..off the wall, thriller, bad, dangerous, history, invincible. then you have to think about ALL of the demos of the songs,(like the DSTYGE demo on the Off the wall special edition and the demos on the this is it album) then you have to think about all of the songs michael recorded in his home studio(the finished AND unfinished) then you have to think about the things michael was recording the last few years of his life, which in my opinion there are a ton! im guessing all in all michael has at least 150-200 unreleased songs/demos.
now whether the estate is going to be smart about this or not i cant answer.
i mean.. we are already 3 years into this deal and only have 1 album of unreleased material..and this is it (im not counting the cirque show, or video game, just the music/concert footage) when i first heard about the record deal i was overjoyed! i figured by we would have a few box sets of michaels tours with a few (4 or 5) concerts from each tour and other little knick knacks to go along with it, and i figured by 3 years we would have WAY more than one album.
the estate really ticks me off.. and if the next album of unreleased material is like the michael album just because they want to make michael more "mainstream" or "the next generation blah blah blah" im gonna protest.. these albums of unreleased materials are NOT FOR the casual listener or for top 40 radio! they are for the hardcore fans!
mark my word, if they dont fix things(meaning more fake tracks etc..) im protesting, this is NOT how michael would want things to be handled.

I hear your frustration but at the same time the releasing of material has to be blanaced against them not appearing to be going on a cash grab or flooding the market.
The simplest thing they could have done was rush release some substandard boxset and cash in.
They are trying to build a long term business.
Also I think the new album of music - probably relates to "new music" not outtakes from the previous albums.
And technically in the 3 years since his death we have had:
This Is It - CD This is It - Film & DVD Michael - New album Visions - DVD boxset and The Immortal Soundtrack.
I agree that they need to focus on the fans and cater to them and not the mass - the best way to do this is through rerelease albums with throrough bonus material of outtakes and demos.
It's how new generations of fans will be able to discover the music and still give us, the lifelong fans a chance to hear outtakes and other unreleased music. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

I wholeheartedly agree
Also, they have to bring Michael's material to the best possible quality there is
I read on MJJC there are plans for Blu Ray releases. They should remaster all of his videos that were done on film and make new high quality transfers
the new toy lines, clothing lines (including Jackie's J5 Collection), the video game, and other products are bringing in fans and reintroducing people to Michael and that's great but the music releases should have a balance like Swa has mentioned before "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Hopefully we'll see more music in the near future. They have to be smart about it though, they can't just pass off anything in a quick scheme to get more money, yanno?

It'll definitely be interesting to hear the next album. If they end up overproducing all the songs, or using any more Cascio songs, it'll pretty much prove they don't care about what the fans think. The mediocre 'Michael' album has a lot of people thinking that there's nothing of worth left in the vault, but I don't believe that. I think they just took the first 10 songs they could find, brought in some producers to 'fix them up' (overproduce and ruin them), and then just put that out without much thought. Hopefully the next album won't be like that.
But I'm definitely more interested in new music than anything else. I thought the Immortal CD was terrible (not sure what everyone else thought of it, I missed that discussion), and the video game and Immortal tour aren't my thing. I already have all the music videos and albums, so reissues aren't important to me. I just want to hear some new songs. I've been waiting for a long time, and the 'Micheal' album didn't satisfy me. After the initial thrill of new music wore off, I really think it was a pretty weak album, and massively overproduced.

Well a few things about the Michael album. We know they left off better tracks (Slave To The Rhythm, Do You Know Where Your Children Are, Blue Gangster, A Place With No Name, etc)
They also made the mistake by not securing the Will.I.Am tracks. Those would be the most current sounding. They should've worked with Will on those.
They could've worked with RedOne to get those tracks finished off.
And they also could've worked with Jerkins to get his tracks on it.
I feel like there were opportunities to make the album really good but they didn't do it.

Will is playing games. There are at least 3 finished tracks (The Future, I'm Dreamin', Missin' You) Just release them Will.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Will.i.am’s work with the late Michael Jackson is music the world might never hear – unless one specific person comes asking. The Black Eyed Peas guru began working with Jackson in 2006 and quickly formed a close bond with the King of Pop. Due to his untimely death in 2009, the final tracks they collaborated on were never blessed by Jackson, something that has kept them away from the public’s ears. “Because we became friends, I don’t want to be an opportunist,” Will.i.am told Access Hollywood Live’s Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Thursday when asked about his work with the late pop star. Will.i.am has been approached about releasing the tracks, but told Billy and Kit that only one person could get him to drop their collaborations. “Now if his mom called me and said, ‘We got to do this,’ then yes,” he explained.

Being that I'm not a B.E.P. fan, I'm not sure how good the songs will be, but he should just release them. But given the half-assed way they assembled the MICHAEL album, I can't blame Will for not wanting his songs to be a part of it. If nothing else, the Will.i.am songs probably have more hit potential than most other songs MJ left behind
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The Will.I.Am songs will be the best songs we haven't heard yet. They will be hits. That's a confident guess.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think Will's productions have been half assed and underwhelming. Maybe he's doing us a favor. Besides they weren't even finished anyway when Michael died.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not the biggest fan of Will.I.Am either. Most of his stuff is junk. But I do think him and MJ made great music. And I do think there might be 3 songs completed or very close.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Think about it though. If there was at least one finished song, he'd submit it... one day no one's gonna wanna care what he did with Will. I sure haven't.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I care what music was created with Will. A lot of people do. Which is why it seems like the subject is always brought up to Will in interviews.
I stand behind the fact that I think the music they created was classic material. But we'll just have to wait and see if it ever does get released.

Upset French fans sue Michael Jackson doctor
RENNES - French fans of Michael Jackson are suing the late pop star's doctor for "emotional damage" they suffered over his death, their lawyer said Friday.
The case against Conrad Murray, who was jailed in November over the star's 2009 death, is due to be heard in the city of Orleans on April 11, lawyer Emmanuel Ludot said.
"It's similar to losing a childhood friend in a traffic accident. Because this death affects you, you have the possibility to file a suit and seek compensation," Ludot said. The lawyer is acting for around 100 fans who are members of an association that calls itself the "Michael Jackson Community".
He said that while each fan could be awarded damages of up to 10,000 euros (S$16,556), they were seeking only a symbolic euro.
Jackson, aged 50 at the time of his death, had hired Murray at a salary of US$150,000 (S$194,000) a month to look after him as he rehearsed and embarked on a series of "This is It" planned comeback shows in London.
The star died on June 25, 2009 at his Los Angeles home of an overdose of anaesthetic propofol, taken to help him battle insomnia.
Murray was found guilty in November of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the maximum four years in prison. http://news.asiaone.com/N...20369.html
