I’m A Born-Again Michael Jackson Fan

Actually, not that I ever stopped being a fan, it’s just that I watched the documentary “Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon” over the Christmas Holiday and was reminded of why I was ever a fan of his in the first place.

Although first of all, if I had listened to the negative reviews coming from some who would consider themselves his biggest fans, I would have never watched this documentary. I suppose some of Michael’s most adoring fans don’t very much appreciate when someone who knew him personally speaks their mind in regards to Mike when he was perhaps not at his most saint-like. From what I had read, I was preparing myself to be assaulted by nasty, unfair opinions of Mike by perhaps those who may have had an axe to grind with him, but that moment never came. Michael, in my opinion, was a wonderful human being and undisputedly one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived. However, he was also a very shrewd executive, and could be devilish, cold and calculating in his dealings with people. That’s part of what I loved about Michael. I appreciate hearing all aspects of how people who knew Michael experienced him, for better and for worse. I just didn’t hear where anyone spoke of Michael disparagingly or cast him in any particular negative light. On the contrary, the people who knew him best seemed to paint a picture of a man that was kind and loving, almost to a fault.

I was on board for Michael’s career from the beginning. I’m just a few years younger than Mike, but I remember first hearing about The Jackson 5 when my family was on vacation in Philadelphia. Everybody was talking about this new group of boys that were out that was as good as The Temptations, and that the lead singer was only 11 years old. Everybody was just blown away by how damned good they were, especially the grown-folks of the day despite the groups youthful appeal. And believe me, from the time you first heard about The Jackson 5; you never stopped hearing about them. They were as hip, fresh, and happening as history portrays them to have been. Yet and still, this documentary taught me a lot about what was going on behind the scenes; stuff that I just didn’t know at the time, stuff that I suppose few of us knew at the time.

For one thing, I never knew of Bobby Taylor or his group The Vancouvers (…nor the other name they went by which included two well known and very unfortunate ethnic slurs), or that Tommy Chong (of Cheech & Chong) was ever a singer, for that matter. Back in those days, the very well established storyline was that Diana Ross had “discovered” the Jackson 5. Talk about being unappreciated; I hope that at least Michael showed Bobby the appropriate love and support for having been the one that worked tirelessly to give The Jackson 5 their start. And speaking of their start; that must have been an amazing party, when Berry Gordy introduced The Jackson 5 to some of the Motown family. I loved the memory that Dionne Warwick relayed about how she first met Michael as a little boy; the way he just sat down next to her, turned and said “…and who are you?”, lol. His focus was laser-sharp from the start. He knew he was going to be bigger than anybody was in that room.

Filled with all this new information about Michael’s beginnings, I put the documentary on hold and put on my “Michael Jackson – Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour” DVD, because I wanted to contrast Michael as a little boy with the best of what he would become as an adult. From the moment Michael jumps up out of the floor and just stands there like a statue while it rains sparkles down behind him while the crowd goes nuts, I just sat there watching while shaking my damned head. This was to be Michael at his peak. Actually, I didn’t even get to see this concert footage until shortly after Michael’s death, but have since watched it probably a dozen times. However, upon watching it this time was when I was reminded: “Damn, I really LOVED this guy!”.

After watching just the first song, his performance of “Jam”, I took the DVD off and continued watching the “Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon” documentary, although not before putting on my studio headphones and listening to “Jam” from the Special Edition CD of “Dangerous”. I listened to it as if it were the first time I was hearing it, and in fact; was remembering the first time I heard it, while on vacation in Las Vegas in December of 1991. With the Special Edition CD, every nuance of the mix rings through loud & clear. Heavy D’s performance was amazing, but it was at that point that I realized I never really knew the lyrics from that song, as many times as I’ve heard it. Therefore, I went to the net and proceeded to bring “Jam” completely into focus. "Dangerous" is clearly my favorite album by Michael Jackson. I took my headphones off and went back to the documentary, thinking: “Damn right, I’m a Michael Jackson fan!”.

The documentary picked up from the rise of his solo career, and then of course went into the two trials. Up until this point in time, I’ve always reserved judgment of Michael in regards to the allegations of child-molestation, feeling that I would leave his guilt or innocence up to his maker to decide. Although, I always felt suspicious about the people that were making these allegations against him, and I always questioned their motives. Even the District Attorney’s motives always seemed suspect to me. In addition, in regards to whatever he may or may not have done, it never seemed to me that Michael would have been the type of person that would have ever physically hurt any of those children, and I could always see how perhaps his attraction to kids could be explained in a way that didn’t involve molestation. After watching this documentary and considering statements that had been made by Macaulay Culkin, Lisa Marie (who seems very direct and honest to me, and like the last person on earth that would attempt to bullshit anyone), as well as various others closely associated with him, I’m satisfied and convinced that the allegations of molestation that were brought against Michael were complete bullshit. Never during the course of the trial were we allowed to see and hear all aspects concerning the accusers. Now that all the information is out, I’m completely convinced that certain people saw a particular weakness in Michael, and constructed a scheme to go after his money. The others involved who weren’t after his money per se, like the D.A., just seemed Hell-bent on tearing this man apart. Sadly, even though Michael was acquitted of all charges, I believe these trials, particularly the last one, were the beginning of the end for Michael. I felt at the time of these trials that these people were killing Michael, literally. I can only imagine how this man must have felt, once loved by the entire world, now being the victim of taunts and ridicule from those who never stopped believing he was a guilty man. I feel so sorry for Michael for the raid on his Neverland ranch, and for the strip-search he was forced to endure, along with the pictures that were taken. That must have been unbearably humiliating. Yet, he stood strong and did his best to fight a good fight, ultimately to no good end. He may have cleared his name under the law, but never completely in the court of public opinion, and that breaks my heart.

What a strong woman his Mom has been through all this, bless her heart. Moreover, what a really good and complete documentary this was about the life of an icon. I've enjoyed this experience over the holiday weekend, reviewing the life and music of Michael Jackson. I feel like a new fan all over again, a born-again Michael Jackson fan.

I have here a couple gun-related stories about our beloved father of the year, legendary musician-humanitarian-and-martyr-like-father Joe Jackson. I saw these stories in a thread that started because of a photo with Joe holding a hand gun. To whoever doesn't know, Joe is an enormous gun lover and has a huge collection. He is also a father full of love and joy to give to whoever wants it. Mother Theresa my ass.

The question now is: are these just lies by people jealous of Joe's success and talent? Is this just fabrication by the same people who made Joe bankrupt? I loved the first half of the documentary, hearing from folks from his childhood and talking about him during the Chitlin' Circuit before they got signed and then at Motown. Bobby Taylor probably has STORIES. Even after Barry took him off of the team, he was still in their lives and even recorded with them in '75 before they signed with Epic. You can tell his opinion on Joe Jackson is quite different from Tito and Rebbie's

The second half.....ehh, I think some parts could've been done better, and LESS David Gest, Frank Cascio, and J. Randy Taraborelli

but you can tell the whole project was done out of love. So many of these documentaries and books are just to cash in on the public wanting to know about Michael, but you can tell a lot of these folks wanted to let people know about the Michael they knew and loved

I also agree that there was quite a bit of David Gest. Before watching this documentary, I couldn't have picked him out of a line-up. But while I was watching it, I was like; "Who IS this guy with the eyebrows?!?", lol. Most documentaries place subtitles under the person speaking, at least for that person's first part in the film. This documentary should have done that, because I didn't know who half those people were. The documentary also made me feel about a half of one percent better about Joe. The goal he had in mind was a good one, and he eventually made it happen. Still, he came/comes across as a tad bit evil to me, lol. At least it was nice to see that he was a rather handsome dude in his youth, I suppose that earned him another half a percent in my book.

Lawd, when David Gest's face showed up on the screen, my eyes watered because my face started to sting. It's stretched that much

In regards to Joe, I think it was interesting how Tito and Rebbie were saying "Our dad wasn't that bad...." then it cuts to Bobby Taylor saying "JOE WAS A TYRANT" and David also echoed that sentiment. Tommy Chung a couple of years ago talked about Joe in stand up performance and said was Joe was an asshole I have a feeling Tito and Jermaine had a better relationship with Joe than Michael and Marlon did. You can still hear hurt in Marlon's voice when he spoke about how Joe was rough on him when they were kids and how Joe kept having him compete with his little brother

My MJJVault youtube page that had old news reports from the Bad Tour, commercials, and other footage was terminated last week because I had several of the Thriller outtakes.
