I would say Janet is/was a bigger star. Mostly because she was able to break out of the shadow of her family and create a career path for herself. As for her peak, I would say it was during the Rhythm Nation era (89 - 91). She was able to accomplish so much during that time while managing to have creative and timeless videos.

As for Beyonce, I would say her career peek was a few years ago with her B'Day project. "Irreplacable" was such a big hit and managed to make her appeal to an audience that she would have never reached. Especially when she did the country version on the AMAs with Sugarland. Is Beyonce bigger than Janet, I wouldn't say she is/was at her peak.

What do u think? I don't think there are too many "creative" videos from Beyonce at all. They all look alike to me (even including the Destiny's Child videos).

I don't know. I'm 22. I wasn't alive duing Control, was months old when Rhythm Nation was going on, and was four during the Janet. era (1986-1994) which I guess would be represent the apex of her popularity right? I've obviously looked back at clips/footage from that time and know about the chart positions + sales and what not but it's a difference when you're physically there and old enough to truly follow it. Do you know what I mean?

Yep. It was totally a different thing compared to when Beyonce got her shine. I remember how she was about everywhere almost, you couldn't miss her on BET or MTV those days and every young black girl wearing her Rhythm Nation outfit. You gotta understand how times were different compared to Beyonce. While Beyonce was successful she didn't have a peak as massive as Janet's.

I totally understand where you are coming from.

I don't know if you have seen a lot of the press and interveiw footage from the Rhythm Nation era. Go to this site and you can download clips from that era. You will see that this was the era when Janet became a HUGE international star.

Janet. If only because her peak coincided with the last era when being a star meant something. Beyonce's a big star. And I enjoy her to some extent. But fame is cheap these days.

I don't think you realise just how giant Beyonce is/was. B'Day really was an event album, I was in highschool when it came out and never had a I heard just about so many people agree on their favorite music at one time. Althought I don't think I have an accurate answer to the OP's question, don't underestimate just how respected Beyonce is.

I prefer Janet wayyyy more than Beyonce and she is an icon that has impacted a generation or two and will continue to do so, just the way MJ did and will continue on. But I hate the fact lots of people can't name Janet songs or say she's michael's sister if they are not fans, at least with Madonna and Mariah and Beyonce they can do that. Maybe they can do it with Beyonce cause she's the it girl right now. I'm curious to know the answer to this question 10-20 years from now.

Janet by far imo now i am only 20. Didn't live through the eras, but i heard that Her videos where played non stop right next to Mariah & Whitney . Tons of her songs are still played on radio...

Beyonce is huge and in high school she was one of the ''it'' music singers, especially Sasha Fierce that album had a lot of hits. But Janet from what i have heard was a lot bigger in her time then Beyonce, not to mention she was able to have a few hits in the 00's. I underestimated Janet & was surprised when feedback became a top 40 hit i never thought she would get another.

So it is impresive she has been able to stay big way after her RN peak

Janet.

Even though her peak was during the Rhythm Nation-era of her career, Janet had 4 straight groundbreaking albums (Control, RN1814, janet., The Velvet Rope) before her decline & setbacks.

I wish I knew of Janet during Control and RN though I knew a few MJ song, I heard of her in passing during janet. from afar and got into her at the tail end/Scream and things were never the same again! lol

She is only really popular in the states..Yall give her way to much credit.

During Janets Peak she was VERY popular internationally I cant say that at this moment but definitly during her peak she was.

After RN came out I was born in 92 so cant really give comment on what Ive experience first hand during Janets peak but am aware that her videos were epic, innovative and she was huge during this period as far as her overall impact. I was at 11 years being blown away by Janets videos and tryna figure out what was so great about Beyonces videos during the mist of her rise to popularity but at that age even now I was always into things way before my generation.

Definitly Janet... no question.

Janet's peak was probably in 2001.

All For You was huge and MTV was pumping her videos into living rooms like never before.

I hate that album. My sister use to torture me by jamming it loud as hell and dancing around.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Janet was big in 2001, but was she really the biggest? I know people were feeling her during A4U more than VR from what I recall in those days, so I guessed it was like janet. era part 2 for many. I'm so sure that album would have sold more had the promo not been cancelled. Easily 5 million with Trust a Try, Come On Get Up and Feels So Right.

That's not even true. Beyonce is big in other countries outside of the U.S.

Janet if anything is more of a U.S. star. She's a huge star in America, but definitely not as big outside of the U.S.

Of course she's had some success in other countries, but she's mainly a U.S. act.

Beyonce is big all over. Europe, South America, Africa, etc. All you need to do is watch her performances from her last tour when she toured overseas to see how popular she really is.

She is bigger worldwide than you think.

Now Janet was at her peak internationally I believe during the "Janet" album and "Together Again" was a big international hit for her, but generally speaking, she is not a huge megastar outside of the U.S.
