She is only really popular in the states..Yall give her way to much credit.

During Janets Peak she was VERY popular internationally I cant say that at this moment but definitly during her peak she was.

After RN came out I was born in 92 so cant really give comment on what Ive experience first hand during Janets peak but am aware that her videos were epic, innovative and she was huge during this period as far as her overall impact. I was at 11 years being blown away by Janets videos and tryna figure out what was so great about Beyonces videos during the mist of her rise to popularity but at that age even now I was always into things way before my generation.

Definitly Janet... no question.

That's not even true. Beyonce is big in other countries outside of the U.S.

Janet if anything is more of a U.S. star. She's a huge star in America, but definitely not as big outside of the U.S.

Of course she's had some success in other countries, but she's mainly a U.S. act.

Beyonce is big all over. Europe, South America, Africa, etc. All you need to do is watch her performances from her last tour when she toured overseas to see how popular she really is.

She is bigger worldwide than you think.

Now Janet was at her peak internationally I believe during the "Janet" album and "Together Again" was a big international hit for her, but generally speaking, she is not a huge megastar outside of the U.S.

Thats not true

Your not listening to what I am saying.

The question is asking who was bigger during the height of their popularity. During Janets peak during HER PEAK and during the height of her popularity she was a big star internationally and even at times during the 90's gave Michael a run for his money with endorsements and chart postions...

Beyonce is an internatonal star I never denied that but you are making it seem like she is this global huge star outside of the United States in all the other countries respectively and that is not true. She might be that way in America but dont be fooled and think she is like that in every country in the world like c'mon.. there is only one artist and second artist comes close second in that category to give her that high regard just because she is the it girl now in the US is way to much.

I agree Janet is not that big now but during her peak??? she was huge and just because she wasnt able to maintain her international appeal doesnt mean her popularity during her peak should be underestimated. I wasnt old enough to tie my shoes and know Janet was the shit back then, still is as far as Im concern

I'm not underestimating Janet AT ALL. I'm a big fan. I like her way better than Beyonce. I was a bit too young to remember Janet's mega success she during with "Rhythm Nation", but I remember how huge she was during "Janet" and beyond.

We all know Jan is more iconic and influential, but the U.S. is not the end all be all is all i'm saying. A lot of Janet fans seem to think that just b/c she's huge in the U.S. or was at one time means she was big all over and that's not the case.

And yes Janet gave MJ a run for his money absolutely, I agree. During the 90's and early 00's, she was bigger than MJ in the U.S., but I feel that Janet fans overestimate her international appeal.

I don't even think Beyonce has even reached her peak yet tbh, but as I said, in the U.S., Janet is bigger than Beyonce will ever be probably, but worldwide, I don't think you can say Janet is the clear winner.

People need to not only think in terms of the U.S. because outside of this Country, Beyonce is definitely giving Janet a run for her money in terms of success and popularity.

That was my whole point.

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

if you look at janet's performances from overseas during her peak you would see how popular she was to. debates like these cant be argued unless the people debating was actually around and old enough to remember each person's 'peak'. if people were in high school when bday came out how can they have any idea how huge janet was? even with the internet and joining forces with the top rap star, i still dont think beyonce came near janet's peak.

I understand your point and I was just a lil thing during Janets popularity lol

And I am saying the same thing the US isnt the entire world lol thats the same point I am trying to make to you on Beyonce.

To be frank, neither one of them are majorly popular worldwide peak or not.

When I think of artists who are globally big worldwide I think of MJ or Madonna. Yes Beyonce is internationally known but you are implying she is major worldwide when that isnt true.

Also, I dont see how you would think Beyonce is bigger than Janet during her peak when her albums overall are not big sellers. Janet catalogues outsells Beyonces miles away. An artist like Beyonce that you are making her out to be should have outsold Janet and even Madonna since you are implying she is on her level of popularity by insinuating she has reached a global popularity Janet also has more music chart hits that if Beyonce was bigger than her during her peak as you said would have trumped by now but hasnt.

Im not disagreeing with some points but this whole she is a HUGE MEGA GLOBAL star outside of the United States is a bit laughable because there is only one artist that comes to my mind when I think of that and there is no one that comes close to that.

Dont automatically assumed that just because shes popular and is heavily overexposed in America thats all im saying and cant forget the past.

Janet was VERY popular and big during her peak and has a diverse fanbase of backgrounds and ethnics.. just saying.

Beyonce also has a diverse fanbase, but people like Janet and those of her generation reached out to diverse crowds and did it before her.

I think the janet. era is remembered very well and the hits off VR and All For You

Would you say Janet has a signature song? Some say Beyonce has Crazy in Love or Single Ladies

Don't "love" me sweetheart, we're clearly not the same age. I've been to both women's shows, and was very surprised to see older women in their 40's at Beyonce's shows, silently praying they still support Janet, who had a VERY diverse fanbase at the shows I went to.

Besides, I love all of Janet's music, but find that not everyone does the way they do with MJ

^^ Not trying to that was a stupid comment.. Implying Janet doesnt have a classic song when she clearly has more influence than Beyonce . Why would she NOT having a signature song? Somebody my age would actually be saying the opposite but thank God I'm not brain wash by the media and can think for myself and dont based everything on hype

The thread isnt about Janet vs MJ. This is about Janet and Beyonce. So why are you bringing Michael Jackson up?

Their are 40 year olds who listen to Drake and watch Hannah Montana so that isnt a good arguement. 40 year olds at Beyonce shows doesnt mean she has a more diverse fanbase.. Janet has different ethnics, age range, culture, demographics at her show

So far all I have read is since Beyonce is a big star now she has more diverse fanbase and popularity than Janet.. Thats like saying since the Justin Bieber movies out sold This is it.. he is more popular than Michael??? well of course it would sell.. he is a big artist now at the moment doesnt mean his more popular.

If anybody is gonna say All For You is Janet's peak than they should probly notice it sold less both world wide and in the U.S. than Bey's Dangerously In Love which was released to years after.

However from a chart stand point I would say Janet was easily her world wide peak, at that point she was easily as big and probly bigger than Beyonce at any point.

I believe that the time megamegamegastar in the past. I doubt that will ever be a star level of Elvis-Beatles-MJ. In times of universal information, the Internet, a very fast pace of life, a star very quickly on and off.
Now, several artists (and many) are pretty close in scale success: Britney, Lady Gaga, Katy, Eminem, Justin, Adele, Beyonce, Rihanna .... I can not determine which of them number 1

I do not think that Beyonce and Janet (even in their prime-time) can be called industry leader, was always someone ahead.

In general, Janet, of course, in front, she a veteran of the scene, Distinguished Artist, but the level of success in their heyday, they are close enough.

1990 global fame was different than 2003 global fame. It may not look like Janet was huge worldwide (and some people attest this as fact) but I think she was considered quite popular overseas even if almost none of her hits reached number-one outside the U.S. perhaps.

But if you compare the two's U.S. fame, Janet's was absolutely more massive. Again, it was a different time compared to now.

Are you some of you guys sure that you are not suffering from nostalgia goggles at this point?

While Janet may have had more ground breaking albums, Beyonce's done pretty well for herself for nearly a damn decade now. Also, Beyonce is a way bigger international star than Janet ever really was. While times have changed, yes, but I don't think that takes away from the fact that Beyonce is, in fact, the bigger star. =/

I think that at the peak of popularity Beyonce was more popular in Europe than Janet. If we consider the world as a whole, they are close enough.

Where Janet albums, because in the '80s and '90s albums for the world's biggest stars were selling well??
I think that at the peak of popularity Beyonce was more popular in Europe than Janet. If we consider the world as a whole, they are close enough.

[Edited 9/21/11 8:29am]

Based on this list that shows that neither of them are big sellers outide the US. Beyonce isnt even a big seller even in the U.S but based on the way album sales are today because of the internet/digital etc... people hype up that she sales when she doesnt. Janet has sold more than her in the US

But the difference between Europe and America obviously is they pay for the real music and popularity and hype doesnt drive them to buy something if it doesnt appeal to them regardless of how commercial an artist is because if that was case Beyonce would be on that list. And of course Janet isnt because she is well past her peaked.

Norah Jones is on there and she has been the best seller in the U.S. and in Europe in the 00s while she is not as popular as Beyonce that speaks volumes

BUT at 00-s album sales fell by 50% compared to the 90s!
We can not compare record sales of stars in the 80's and 90's and sales in recent years, this is incorrect, the market for music in a coma, we can only compare the sales of the artists in the same period.

In the 80's 90's sales were high, they most accurately reflect the popularity of the performer, but Janet did not have any album in the Top 100.
It is a measure of her popularity in Europe as compared to other pop-artists 80-90-s: Madonna, Mariah, Celine, and, of course, her brother!

I brought the figures only to show that Janet had never been one of the most popular artists in Europe (always had a few people ahead of her).
Beyonce in 2006-2009 was a really big here, one of the most popular people.

Oh I definitly agree those artists you mentioned were way popular than Janet and I also agree its dumb as well as ridiculous to compare an artist like Janet to Beyonce because they come from different eras and one is an Icon and really shouldnt be compared. However, comparing her to Beyonce, I still feel she made more impact and was more popular during her peak.

Its just weird in itself to compare the two because its different like you said.

lowkey

what part of beyonce's 'peak' has been close to janet's? she didnt have more hits, her albums wasnt bigger, her tours wasnt bigger, her influence wasnt bigger, hell beyonce grew up listening to janet. her actual accomplishments in the industry does not come close to janets, i agree her hype is bigger.i would argue that janet's last big era (all for you) was close to beyonce's peak. i think people base janet's career off of her post nipplegate projects, even for somebody who hasnt had a big pop hit in like a decade she is still used to compare the current girls against, which shows her influence.

I'm going to agree you on this cinnamon , I feel Janet is a U.S. Superstar sure she had success in other countries but most of her achievements occurred in America (chart hits, most of album sales etc) never felt she was a dominant music figure globally but nontheless she was a big star

I'd say as far as the U.S. goes, it was Janet. And Janet's peak was the Rhythm Nation 1814 era.

But for worldwide success, it would be Beyonce and Beyonce's peak was either the first album, or the Sasha Fierce era. Janet did have world tours and what not, but her hits and album sales werent sky high (other than Japan), and Beyonce was somewhat much more of an international pop star than Janet.

The more massive popularity in what context?
Beyonce has been more prestigious awards, more awards the Grammys, I think the B is very popular worldwide.

LOL I disagree. The Dangerously in Love era (2003-2004) was bigger than that.
