Personally I say Beyonce as Janet has never been a worldwide pop icon. She's big in selected territories but Beyonce is huge pretty much everywhere. The only time Janet was ever a worldwide bonfide star was for about 4 months during Together Again's chart run.

During Janet's commercial peaks, the US always had other female artists at the same time that were much bigger globally.

And even during Together Again, the biggest female stars in the world that time were the Spice Girls, and of course Madonna and Mariah, and I remember people caring for them more, and me being "that janet girl" lol though I remember the song constantly being on the radio. What about when That's the Way Love Goes came out? Her peaks were excellent with that track and the album.

I do remember Janet fans a few years ago boasting about Together Again being something like the best selling number 2 single in the UK ever. It wasn't even the biggest selling number 2 single by a female that year (Natalie Imbruglia and Toni Braxton both outdid it). I think Wham! still hold the record with White Christmas anyway.

Anyway, I've recently been ecstatic at the new availability of Saturday Night Live seasons from the 80s and 90s to download. I just finished watching the episode with Heather Locklear & Janet this morning. I'd only ever seen the 'Throb' performance once before. Much better than her 2004 performances.

That Throb performance used to be aired as a music video sometimes over here. I LOVE the Anytime, Anyplace performance, she sounds SO good IMO and looks so pretty

I don't think I believe that record either though I do remember her talking about it being big all around the world, even when I Get Lonely was already the next single.

I think Janet makes a cute Dorothy Dandridge (Janet did some magazine cover in full Dorothy/Carmen make-up)

Is this Janet? It doesn't look like her. Especially by the eyes.

Yep, it's her. The late Kevyn Aucoin did her make-up in these photos.

Kevyn Aucoin was a fabulous makeup artist. He even made Lisa Marie Presley look exactly like Marilyn Monroe in a photoshoot. I wonder how Janet would have looked in the 00's had she continued working with him if alive instead of Fran the Man Cooper lol

Positively stunning photo of Janet.... if I was her, I would have that picture blown up and on my wall at home.... the perfect self idolization portrait those hollywood types always have hanging in their home

It does Janet a total disservice to say that she isn't popular worldwide (sounds silly, I know, but for all she's accomplished, it's true). As for Janet's "globally-known" single, that would have to be "Together Again". That song was massive everywhere. It was a top ten hit globally.

Again, as for her global appeal, she has fanclubs the world over. She's performed for the Queen of England. She's performed to sell-out crowds in Africa, in Europe, in Asia, in Australia. Global stars such as Kylie Minogue, Peter Andre, JLS, and Samantha Mumba have either been compared to her, sampled her music, incorporated elements of her videos into their own, or just stated how much she's inspired them. Are there some people in the world who only know her as MJ's sister? I'm sure there are. But she is not a virtual unknown outside of the USA, as some people seem inclined to believe.

[Edited 9/30/11 9:17am]

I'm not saying she's not popular worldwide. A lot of stars are popular and I don't dispute her doing wonderful in Europe, Asia and Africa. However, VERY FEW attain the popular status of the MJ's, Madonna's and Beatles of the world. Although Janet has broken records and she is one of my favourite artists of all time and such an inspiration to me, she still doesn't get the legendary credit she deserves on an international scale the way we see it with the aforementioned artists.

To be honest with you. It still confuses me to why people keep putting her on the same par as MJ lol Majority of her sales come from either the US or Europe lol

Like Im not trying to start anything, but It just confuses me to why people keep doing it lol.

It also confuses me to why people keep saying Janet isnt known widely outside the US when she has more number 1 hits outside the US and sold more outside the US, keep in mind her sales havent even been recertified. I mean is it that hard to believe that MJ wasnt the only Superstar in the whole darn family? confused

Yeah I know that, lol. No one is as famous as MJ.

And this thread is Void. lol

As Seaman pointed out Beyonce had a lot of advantages, youtube, Itunes, ect.

Had she came out in the 80's with the same mess she's doing today in the 80's? She's be just another Tina Turner. period.

Yea just checkin! cause ya know Mikey is my baby lol Janets my girl to!

I wouldnt even compare Beyonce to Tina because Tina exactly impacted, influenced a genre versus, conveyed emotion in her live performances, had classics while Beyonce who has done absolutely nothing for the music industry despite her accolades lol

but I understand the point you were getting at... For the most part, its her image that has gotten her thus far because the Rhythm Nation video ALONE pawns any shit Beyonce has ever done.

I dance in heels to LOL but I also tap, do jazz, hip hop etc ya know REAL intricate DANCING LOL

Michael is my man... you keep dreamin!

The reason why this generation views it as such is because they havent been exposed to REAL dancers. Their constantly shoved these mediocre artists who cant dance so they believe its good entertainment since they see it all the time.
