The Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Maitraya Thread

I honestly thought I was the only one left who cared for the guy or even thought about him until I got to the org! To this day, I still love Symphony and Damn, Vibrator, Neither Fish... Nor Flesh, and of course, the Hardline. Seeing him at the American Legion Hall in Hollywood (I think his last show here ever, Vibrator tour) was one of the most amazing and intense shows I've ever seen.

A few years ago I came across Wildcard, and although I found it uneven, there was a lot on there that I liked. Soon after that, I discovered Angels & Vampires, and although it's been several years now, I can't seem to make it through either volume. Now, I see on his site that there are several releases since then.

Should I pick these up? What are your thoughts on Sandanda's post-TTD music in general?

I've never even heard any of his recent stuff. I just remember him for "Wishing Well" and "Sign Your Name".

Musically he's actually talented as hell, so I don't get why he didn't become HUGE.

I say no. I'm a huge TTD fan, but I couldn't find much to like in any of the Sananda albums.

Terrence is very talented! got into his first album recently biggrin

Sadly look's like he fail off cause he ran his mouth to much, i'm talking Kanye times Axl Rose times 100.

Saying some mess like his next album will be better then Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club or something to that effect.

How did Terence season start? lol I've always loved Wishing Well since about the time it came out, and last week, I discovered If You Let Me Stay and went crazy, cause at first I thought it was Stevie singing, but it had a James Brown and MJ like sound to it too. After it, I discovered Sign Your Name...I think I will pick up his first album. I checked out Dance Little Sister too, but got bored with it.

Laugh, but that crazy quote of his is what intrigued me to hear his first album back in '87, so I guess it worked.

The actual quote was that Hardline [his first album] was better than Sgt. Pepper. It was a shrewd publicity stunt, and if you're old enough to remember, this was right around the time Sgt. Pepper was getting a ton of press for it's 20th anniversary and it's first release on CD. Needless to say, it wasn't as good as Pepper, but I became a fan nonetheless.

I was about 5 years old when I loved Wishing Well lol never knew about music headlines, just music people played. He is great though, so I'm not mad at him. St. Pepper is awesome too.

U know how at the beginning of "If U all get to heaven" the audio is low for the first 15 seconds and then you get the thunderous sound? I remember coming home with that cassette the day that it came out and putting it into the stereo and of course I could barely hear it. Meanwhile my dad is asleep in the next room and the last thing U want to do is wake him up and esp. for using his stereo system. So thinking that the sound was jacked, I turn the volume up full blast. Man, I ran across the room and almost broke the stereo trying to turn the music off be4 he woke up...He didn't wake up and this is still easily one of my favorite albums of all time. It's a shame that his ego overshadowed his artistry. But again, this album is essential listening...Solid!

Yep, this is the era when I saw him at American Legion right next door to the Hollywood Bowl. It was beyond words, balls to the walls, sick. And I wasn't expecting it, because he was already outside of the public eye by the... crazy. Unforgettable.

There's gotta be something in all of that Sananda stuff, but I haven't found it yet.

love TTD, i don't have Neither Fish nor Flesh though. the Sananda stuff is pretty uneven as has been stated, but he still has that VOICE. Wild Card had O'Davina, Shalom, What Shall I Do and Designated Fool, which are WELL worth it! i haven't copped Angels and Demons yet. but as for his "challenges", huge ego indeed but not close to Kanye and Axl status, the Beatles comment nothwithstanding. heck to me, his debut was pretty impressive. i don't have ANYTHING by the Beatles and feel as if they're overrated from the random songs i've heard, guess i just don't GET them.

Hey, don't blame us. He was living overseas for years before he even made his first album.

He also mumbled something about having a dream, and in that dream Marvin Gaye giving him the lyrics to a song on the "Neither Fish Nor Flesh" album and all that other "i'm so strange, mysterious, and better than anyone else" wankhype, which ultimately resulted in his 2nd album sinking faster than the Titanic.

I liked it though, good album, went to see him live too, very good live act.

Great thread biggrin!

He is my favourite artist and like I just said on the other thread before I found this one I love his albums from The Hardline until Wildcard, especially Vibrator, Symphony and Wildcard. After Wildcard I pretty much stopped listening to the newer stuff I must confess even though I have most of it. There are some personal reasons for that too, but mainly that I just don't feel that music as much as I feel his older music.

"Holding On To You" is my favourite song ever and "Vibrator" is my favourite album ever, I love it from start to finish.

I saw him live quite some times over the years and his Vibrator show I went to was the best concert I have ever been to in my whole life and I have seen tons of great concerts including about 50 Prince shows.

I'm not a huge fan, I do like quite a bit of his stuff but he really lost me with the stuff he's done the last ten years or so. I do think that he has/had an absolutely fantastic voice. Surely one of the best voices of his generation. On the strength of that alone he should have been a much, much bigger star.

I like this one. It would be great if he did more rock music.
