Like A Prayer is Madonnas magnum opus (not Ray Of Light like someone else posted in another thread). Gags can sell 100 million of this newfangled pop and it wont be as "important" a record as LAP was/is.

I agree. LAP was a very personal confessional type of album. I don't see Gaga in any of her songs being that personal in her lyrics.

Not a hugh Maddona fan but Like A Prayer is a classic and proves that I was right about GaGa this chick does not have an orginal idea when it comes to music.

I think LAP was Madonnas artistic turning point.

I think it was too however I still think her first album is her greatest ever. Yes it might be bubble gum pop but god damn it was great!! LAP shows Madge growing up and showing a more artistic side. I wish she would give Nile Rodgers and Stephen Bray a call and create the same magic of the first album but I know it will never happen.

[Edited 2/19/11 13:22pm]

Madonna went so far past that debut. Catchy songs, but I only cared for about half of it, but I could see Madonna was going to be real big. My favorite on the first album is still 'Borderline.' That's all I still listen to from her first album really.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Very wrong. This is the one release where the so called filler were what we call optimal deep cuts. Thats how I view it. LAP is defined as a classic both then and now.

Some of you crack me up. My own damn opinion can't be wrong. Tis okay to disagree. lol

Spanish Eyes- Full on filler IMHO

Promise To Try= Nice try but mehh...

Dear Jesse- Full on filler IMHO

Cherish=Horrid

I loved Cherish (took me 10 years to get into it actually) but those tracks were not good in my opinion either

Really? Borderline is the only thing you listen to from that album? I canlisten to that albumin it's entirety except for Holiday only because i've heard it way too many times. Every track on that album rocks, even the fillers! Think of me & I know it are the just and don't get me started on Evereybody!

Yeah, 'Borderline' is it. I never have to urge to listen to the whole album. I'll either listen to my Madonna favorites when I get an urge or an album. But it would never be her first. I don't like, 'Like A Virgin' all the way through, I may not even have the whole album.

Like A Prayer is awesome, I admit. But it is no Ray Of Light.

Of course people are revisiting Like A Prayer, that is what Born This Way was designed to do, among other things. GaGa put her toes into this homage to Madonna. Does she need to put her whole foot into in for people to realize/acknowledge something deeper is going on?

yeah, i have to agree, LAP is such a good album, start to finish. the only thing that still

bothers me to this day is that the video version of express yourself is so much better,

and the album version just feels a bit too bare boned or something.

the rest of the cuts are all top notch. i've never quite understood the hate for lovesong

since i find it compelling and a nice restingpoint in the first half of the album.

stuff like "till death do us part" and "oh father" and well actually all of the songs on that

album are total winners and songs i loved then and now and everytime inbetween that

i've listened to them since 1989.

even the b-side "supernatural" is ace. i used to only know the red hot and blue version

and then i heard the actual 'original' from the cherish single and it made my day. such

a good song. for a long time i thought it must have been written together with prince,

but i know now that it obviously wasn't.

LAP, good stuff.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

nod Exactly. I love LAP, but I think it's slightly overrated. Ray of Light is a classic through and through - one I doubt Madonna will ever surpass.

I do love the b-sides to these two: "Supernatural" and "Has to Be." Both should've made their respective albums.

I agree, the remixed (video) version puts the album version to shame.

I'm one of the few Madonna fans who thinks that her first album is overrated lol Yeah,it's fun and danceable but it's very lightweight compared to what came several years later.I didn't really start paying attention to Madonna until she started doing stuff like "Live To Tell" and "Papa Don't Preach".It was the 'Like A Prayer' album that really sealed the deal for me.

Lucky Star has ALWAYS sounded unfinished to me. It's lacking.

'Holiday' was my intro to Madonna and I can listen to it but don't go looking for it.

'Burning Up' is the only other track worth consideration for me.

The rest I have no need to revisit.

So there are only three tracks on the debut that I will listen to now.

I agree with others here that don't really get into the first 3 albums. I started paying attention with Like A Prayer. That's when her music started to appeal to me. I'm sure Prince's involvement had something to do with that as well.

Smell Test:

Check this out. I know this will sound strange but has anyone ever noticed the scent that is present on LAP booklet? It's like a musk oil scent. I remember pointing this out back in 1989 and I recently bought a used copy and it's on there as well. Like I said sounds crazy but get out your copy and tell me you notice this. My roomate did and he agreed.

I'm right there with you to an extent. Ray of Light is definitely my favorite, but then I have Confessions ahead of Madonna and then Like a Prayer. Those are easily her four most complete albums to my ears.

That debut album is no joke either. I was mad that Bordelrine got the huge push instead of the more funkiuer cuts but then again I realize that the pop star in the making nmachine was beginning for her on that.

Im not one of those you had to be there kind of people but you kind of did to appreciate the funky little punk rnb popstress and her evolution to LAP.
