It's popular in China, that's where Yao Ming is from. The NBA went over there and got him. He had half a decade of fame and then died and received less after death exposure than James Dean or Marilyn. Now, if we were talking "geek icons" maybe...
Umm...No.
The entire martial arts action genre of film-making post-1973 is heavily (if not entirely) based on what Bruce Lee started. Before him, martial arts films were inane and fake, with actors flying in the air from trees like animals, or with white men terribly/satirically impersonating Asian people. Bruce changed all of that. His style of compelling plots and realistic stunts/cinematography totally upgraded the way Kung Fu, Karate, Kickboxing, etc, were captured for movies, especially during the 80s and 90s. Without Bruce, there would be no Jackie Chan, Van Damme, Jet Li, Jason Statham, etc, etc. And just like Michael Jackson, Bruce's vocal sound effects alone are iconic worldwide. So, yeah, since you're somehow not aware of this, LOL, please don't tell others to "get real."

In his case, literally. Jackie was a stuntman/extra in The Big Boss and Enter The Dragon. Sammo Hung was in Enter The Dragon too. Chuck Norris was in Return Of The Dragon. David Carradine became famous indirectly because of Bruce, since Bruce came up with the TV show that wound up being Kung Fu. But the networks at the time didn't want to build a show around a Chinese actor. There's even a new Green Hornet movie now.

I was thinking that too, but in the musical Pop Culture sense, he's outshadowed by his peers Michael Jackson and Madonna.
One thing that always bothers me: Prince's 1999 and LRC videos were also among the first to air on MTV, but MJ receives all the credit for his Thriller videos. Granted, they're better - but both artists helped break through the racial barrier.

I've never met a single person who doesn't know who Michael is and can't tell you one of his songs. His influence was truly global. So he's #1 on my list.
And there's no way Madonna should ever be higher than Michael on any iconic list or musical talent list....lol
I'm gonna throw a wild card into the list. Assuming we're not just limited to actual people.... Bart Simpson.
Now he fits the bill of being a pop culture icon.
Osama is an interesting choice, Joe. I personally wouldn't consider him to be part of "pop culture".
Uh, Militant..I hate to break it to you (hell, I hate to break it to myself), but I actually met someone who did not know who Michael Jackson was.
I was just talking to him on facebook one time, and I mentioned Billie Jean..he's like..."is that a good song?" I was like ...mind you, this was after Michael passed away. EVERYBODY IN THE WHOLE WORLD BY THEN KNEW WHO MICHAEL JACKSON WAS! Then again, he's from the boondocks and doesn't have cable tv or radio. Maybe that explains it...but still!!!!
Needless to say...I gave him Michael Jackson's Youtube Channel and told him "study up".

First it's "Beatles" and second I don't have to be old to appreciate the Beatles. I've heard their music for so many years I can sing them almost without forgetting the words. I'm kinda pissed that the Beatles are even dissed especially here in the ORG. And I love Michael all the same but I'm getting tired of the comparisons and everything. I accept them both as equals so I don't get with this inferior vs. superior argument with them. But if that's how you feel, knock yourself out.
It can't be helped. The Beatles, Elvis, and Michael Jackson are some of the three biggest names in pop culture in the last 50 years. You're going to get to get comparisons. It's inevitable. I know that you may like the Beatles and are familiar with their work, but not everyone is. Some people are still not as familiar with MJ, especially if they were born post 1993. I talked to my friend's niece who is 17 and she didn't even know who he was until he died back in 2009.
Some people I talk with on another board don't even understand what the big deal was when he died since all they are familiar with is trial era MJ. With Elvis, they only know him as a racist thief. As for the Beatles? Some of them think that they are nothing more than a 60s version of the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber, with their silly little pop songs.
What can you do about that?

The Beatles are possibly the only people that stand in the way of Michael Jackson. But he's bigger than Elvis on an international level, and I have the receipts to prove it as far as sales figures. The only place where Presley outsold Jackson was here in the states and in the U.K. Every other area of the world in any corner you name Michael eclipses him in fame and recognition.
The Beatles, however, still most likely reign supreme. You can't discredit them at all and no one has outsold them. No one. |

What I meant was his method of filmmaking replaced that unrealistic type of martial arts as the predominant production style. Pre-Lee, almost all martial arts films included the fighters jumping around, over buildings and lakes, battling in the air, like Marvel comic characters. After him, that fake flying eventually became almost non-existent. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

I don't know, in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's there were a lot of ghost/horror martial arts movies, and they usually contained air fights (being that there's ghosts or monsters involved ). but I do admit that HP is insanely successful even if I can't stand the books or the movies, what's wrong with 00's kids?!?!

I don't get the hype of the Harry Potter phenomenon myself. And apparently if you see spoilers from the recent film, some fans losing their mind over a naked Harry and Hermoine making out or something. It's one confusing phenomenon to me lol but everybody loves those kids. I admit I'm attracted to Daniel Radcliffe (and Rupert Grint) but that's as far as I'll go to liking Harry Potter lol
Have you even read the books? The writing is unbelievably good. I seriously hope you're not basing your opinion on the films, the films are absolutely awful and NOT an accurate representation of the characters. They're pretty visuals, nothing more.
You wanna question kids fave book choices, question Twilight. THAT success is deplorable. Check out this tumblr, even at the core of the author's grammar skills, Twilight is terrible: http://reasoningwithvampi...umblr.com/
Having said that, HP or Twilight are not yet as iconic as LOTR, although there was one time when the only book printed more than HP was the Bible. |

You know everyday i see someone wearing a T. Everyday. I know he's older than 50 but it's in the last 50 years he and his symbol became so iconic.
Other notables all things 'Star Wars' & especially Darth Vader, 'Batman' & Mickey Mouse.
Who says the biggest pop culture figures have to have been living and breathing?
I'd say all the above have had a bigger impact on popular culture and are more recognisable than even the Beatles and MJ.
