IMO, it stunted the public from seeing his future work as anything but "not Thriller". There's people out there who believe he never had a hit after Thriller when in reality, Black or White almost topped Billie Jean's success and many of the songs commonly associated with him are on Bad.

------

* Plenty of rappers could be very successful if they stopped with the gangsta image and chose better lyrical content. Will I Am is still capable of making good songs (Rihanna's Photographs) but will always go back to repetative shit. Akon did a really classy MJ tribute song which was far superior to anything he'd done before. Diddy's best song was I'll Be Missing You because it was real and honest. Jay Z has mostly dropped the image, as has Eminem, and both are back on top.

The crap most put forward now only sells because it gets stuck in people's heads and it tricks them into thinking they like it.

* Popular artists shouldn't go on a break for more than a year these days.

Akon is not a good artist, I'm not even going to mention Diddy, I despise that man very much, both on a personal level and in terms of ruining artist and Hip Hop. Jay-z should have stayed in retirement, and Eminem lost his edge a long time ago.

Well, he was good enough for MJ to want to work with him.

My point was these artists have POTENTIAL but prefer to pander to the masses (or their label) when, as the songs I've mentioned showed, they are capable of more.

Jay Z's work has excelled in the last 10 years and Eminem's new album is on par with The Eminem Show and Slim Shady LP.

All Night Dancing...corny..Bless His Soul bored That's What You Get is good but not too memorable in my opinion..a great closer though..Destiny also does nothing for me

I think 'Destiny' is the Jacksons' best album lol

Destiny & Triumph > Off the Wall & Thriller.

Elvis was more diverse than people give him credit for.

James Brown's legacy has been overlooked.

1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times stunted Prince's growth.

The Clash > The Sex Pistols (like both groups mind you)

Fats Domino is the heart and soul of New Orleans R&B.

The Supremes had better material in the early '70s compared to their late 1960s period with Diana.

The Jacksons > The Jackson 5

Where I'm Coming From & Music of My Mind > Talking Book & Innervisions

Gladys Knight > Aretha Franklin

Florence Ballard was NOT the best singer of the Supremes, Jean Terrell was.

Martha and the Vandellas were underpromoted by Motown.

The Temptations' late 1960s material > Early to mid 1960s material

Berry Gordy's promotion (over-promotion) of Diana Ross destroyed Motown Records.

The Miracles should've been in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame instead of just Smokey.

Isaac Hayes' solo career left a lot to be desired.

Betty Davis is the queen of funk.

Tina Turner's Private Dancer was the only solid album she ever released in her solo career.

That or Triumph. I think both albums were Michael Jackson solo albums in disguise.

It is!!! Growing up, it was that song that people, despite that it was old even then, never stopped playing. My Buddha, that song was not that fucking great.

Luther Vandross had a better singing voice than most people of his time.

Juvenile lost his edge after 2004.

Nelly was and still is lame.

Jaheim is the best R&B artist right now.

Bobby Valentino's regular voice is very unappealing.

Prince had one of the worst material ever during the 90s, with the exception of Diamond & Pearls and Rave2 Joy.

Luther Vandross had a better singing voice than most people of his time. Not totally unpopular. People called him the greatest soul singer of his generation.

Juvenile lost his edge after 2004. Juvenile had an edge ha? When did he ever have it ha? When he was making all those hits ha? lol

Nelly was and still is lame. Not totally unpopular, he's always been lame. wink

Jaheim is the best R&B artist right now. Needs better material IMHO.

Bobby Valentino's regular voice is very unappealing. He sounds like a frog.

Prince had one of the worst material ever during the 90s, with the exception of Diamond & Pearls and Rave2 Joy. Now hold up now... "Diamond & Pearls" is a gem but so is "The Love Symbol". Rave is still a stinker lol

Hope I don't get stoned for this but I prefer Donny Hathaway's version of "For All We Know" than his version of "A Song for You" (technically "A Song for You" is HIS song though Leon Russell originally recorded it)...

Biggie was an okay rapper but Tupac was a genius at it.

Barbara Streisand's singing is overrated.

Al Jarreau is annoying as hell.

Aaliyah would be just as successful (if not more) than Beyonce if she were still here

'The Wiz' would have been more successful and better if Stephanie Mills had played Dorothy

Ludacris is the best rapper out now

Justin Timberlake is a talented dude without Timbaland

Gwen Stefani > Fergie ; whether solo or in a group

All female pop artists copy Janet more than Madonna; they just won't admit it

Bjork > Lady Gaga

Flyleaf > Paramore

Prince's best album was the Love Symbol album

Lisa Fischer is an extremely underrated vocalist

Lauryn Hill was the only one who actually mattered in the Fugees

U2 is very overrated

'Rock With You' is MJ's best song and 'Remember The Time' is his best video

Madonna's last great album was 'Bedtime Stories'

Gladys Knight doesn't get enough credit; she discovered the Jackson 5 and Aaliyah

Jennifer Hudson is the best thing to come from 'American Idol'

Biggie wouldn't have made it without Puffy which is why Tupac was the better of the two

Britney Spears wouldn't have made it if TLC had taken 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'

Prime Whitney Houston was an incredible singer, but a lot of the songs (even on her beloved first album) were garbage. It was the production, a product of its time, I guess. Entirely too slick, often lacking substance.
