On that episode of Unsung showcasing Stacey Lattisaw, they reported that she and Johnny were definitely GF and BF and that they would stay up all night talking on the phone cuz being teenagers and Stacey's family being in the church...they weren't allowed to do much else.

I did hear the rumors about Sugar Ray and Johnny which just didn't seem believeable at all.

I guess that Luther was more famous than Johnny. His non-black audience was slightly bigger. Luther was also able to keep his secret better than Johnny. Ever since Luther's death, none of his lovers have written a tell-all book, so Luther was smarth enough to choose people that would keep their mouths shut. If Johnny wants to keep his sexuality a secret, he needs to stay away from tranny lovers.

There's always been a policy of, don't ask, I want acknowledged in the entertaiment world and especially in the African - American community. Why such rumors and innuendo have dogged Mr. Gill , I'm not entirely sure; maybe it's his friendship with Mr. Murphy. We've been more willing to label, gossip, or start whisper campaigns, about women in the industry irrespective if it's based on truth or not. I hoping we get to a time where we don't see someone's sexulity as a big deal. Still, to accuse someone of being gay/homosexual is used. . . seen as a slur, an insult. That's unfortunate..... Mr. Gill says he's not a gay man. Ok. If he later says he is, that's ok too. Just my two cents.

I suspect it's somewhat the opposite of what you're suggesting.

Everyone assumed Luther was gay -- and he was neither hostile to the suggestions nor resorted to "uber straight guy" tactics to prove anything otherwise. As a result, there was comparatively less titilation in rumors about him, and there would be no real bite to anyone close outing him.

Johnny, on the other hand, gets all indignant at the accusations (just as, say, any cornered diva might ) and starts suggesting a slew of (uncorroborated) female conquests while being perfectly dolled up, never quite with any of these woman... and repeatedly implicated with other equally questionable brothers. Whether he's actually gay or not, he creates the perfect target.
