Rihanna: Going back to Brown after beating 'wrong'
NEW YORK – Rihanna said Thursday that she regrets going back to ex-boyfriend Chris Brown after he left her bruised and battered during a February assault, warning other women facing domestic violence to not let themselves become blinded by love. "It's completely normal to go back. You start lying to yourself," the 21-year-old singer said on "Good Morning America" in her first TV interview following the beating. "I'll say that to any young girl who is going through domestic violence: 'Don't react off of love.'" Brown, 20, was arrested Feb. 8, hours after he was accused of beating Rihanna after the couple attended a pre-Grammy Awards party. He later pleaded guilty to felony assault and a judge ordered Brown and Rihanna to stay away from each other. In the interview, Rihanna, who is no longer with Brown, said she was ashamed to go back to him after the attack. "That's embarrassing — that's the type of person I fell in love with. So far in love, so unconditional, that I went back," she said. "That's not what I want to teach people." The attack occurred in Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood as Brown drove a rented sports car. A Los Angeles police detective described a brutal attack in a search warrant affidavit filed in the case, stating Brown hit, choked and bit Rihanna and tried at one point to push her from the car. A photo of her bruised face was circulated on the Internet. In an interview with Glamour magazine, posted online Tuesday, she said about the leaked photo, "I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it's my life." In her interview with "Good Morning America," Rihanna said she soon realized that, as a role model to young women, her returning to Brown sent the wrong message. "When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be held responsible for telling them, 'Go back,'" she said. "I didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these girls' lives until that happened," she added. "It was a wake-up call for me, big time, especially when I took myself out of the situation." Brown's career suffered after his arrest, with sponsors dropping him and radio stations refusing to play his music. Both he and Rihanna had to cancel several high-profile appearances, including planned performances at the Grammy Awards the day of the attack. Brown has apologized to fans and has said he has repeatedly apologized to Rihanna for the attack. In August, Brown said he was still in shock about his actions. He also revealed that he called his mother, who was a domestic violence victim, the night of the attack and broke down. ABC will air more chunks of the interview on Friday's "Good Morning America" and then Friday evening on the news magazine "20/20." Brown also will recount his perspective in an interview to air Friday on MTV. Rihanna's interview coincides with the debut of her new single, "Russian Roulette," from her upcoming album, "Rated R." It's her first CD since 2007's multiplatinum "Good Girl Gone Bad." In Thursday's interview, Rihanna said, "I am strong. This happened to me. I didn't cause this. I didn't do it. This can happen to me and it can happen to anybody." It's nice that she considered her young fans when she officially dumped Chris Brown for good. I'm a little confused that she doesn't consider them when it comes to her sexual image, but over-sexed imagery is the lesser of two evils in her situation so Prince Rogers Nelson

I like her song, even though I am not totally comfortable with the images it presents. I don't mind a song going to a dark place, as life takes you to dark places sometimes. What I found alarming is that she lead with this song after having been through such a dark, violent and public incident. I just wondered if she was promoting a "live on the edge" type of thing and thought it was "cute."

Rihanna To Preview 'Rated R' at Secret London Gig November 6, 2009 With the release of "Russian Roulette," "Wait Your Turn" and "Hard," Rihanna fans have already gotten a pretty good sneak peek at what the singer's upcoming Rated R album will sound like. But on November 16, just a week before the disc's November 23 street date, Rihanna will pull back the curtain even more when she takes the stage at an undisclosed location in London for a free show that will be webcast to a global audience. According to details provided by sponsor Nokia, Rihanna will be performing songs from the album at the show. In a promo video for the event, Rihanna, dressed in a plunging neckline top and sporting her now-familiar swept-back hairdo, says, "I'm really excited about my new album coming out on November 23. I can't wait to hear what you think, so you're all invited to hear it first when I perform live from London. The whole show will be streamed online, which means you can watch it wherever you are, anywhere in the world, as long as you've got an Internet connection. Sign up online, tell your friends, get my widget on your blog and make sure everyone you know is watching with you on November 16." In an interview posted on Nokia's music blog, the singer admitted that she's a bit nervous about the show, her first solo concert since her assault at the hands of former boyfriend Chris Brown in February. "It's a live stream worldwide. which means everyone can watch it at the same time all over the world, live, all at once, which is exciting," she said. "It makes me nervous ... because it's not just the 6,000 people in the venue, but it's millions of people across the world watching it all at once. ... It's exciting though; it's a big thing that everyone can see it. There's no better way to launch an album." In addition to the London gig, the cell phone maker announced that it will be hosting simultaneous listening parties around the globe on the same date. The Nokia Music Store will also offer an enhanced version of the album on its release date, with exclusive cover art, a remix and an unnamed exclusive track. http://www.mtv.com/news/a...anna.jhtml

It's nice that she considered her young fans when she officially dumped Chris Brown for good. I'm a little confused that she doesn't consider them when it comes to her sexual image, but over-sexed imagery is the lesser of two evils in her situation so It's a bit ridiculous to get pissy about a sexual image on a PRINCE forum considering how he started and remained for a long time AND the proteges he had. Actually, I was commenting on the fact that SHE made the comment about the impression she gives her young, female fans and an over-sexed image isn't something to present to young girls who, she even admitted, can be impressionable to what celebrities do. It's the same context as the supermodel who got fired because she was told that she was too fat to model for the company and she was a size 4. There are lots of young girls who look at these female celebrities as rolemodels and sadly many of them try to emulate their favorite female celebrity which is 100% fact no matter who wants to argue with it. Girls were copying Rihanna's hairstyle from her previous album so I know that what I'm sayin' isn't a figment of my imagination...same thing was happening with Jennifer Aniston's hair during the height of 'Friends' popularity and women getting ass implants to get that 'J. Lo Booty' and collagen injections in their lips to get the 'Angelina Jolie look'. Our society has become more obsessed with celebrities than ever, so if she's going to be so concerned with her young fans than she should take all aspects that can cause negative effects on them into consideration and not just one. If she puts a 'Parental Advisory' sticker on her new album (which I'm sure she will; hopefully) due to the mature lyrical content, than I'll definitely give her praise and put all the blame on the parents who buy it for their young kids who shouldn't be hearing it. Honestly, I think she's a waay better rolemodel than Miley Cyrus. Firstly, Prince's first album imagery really wasn't overly-sexual and nothing like what music is nowadays. Secondly, Rihanna damn sure ain't no Prince no matter how much people are saying they currently look alike. Kinda insulting to compare the two of them; because, despite sexual imagery on Prince's part, he could have made it without the sexual image just fine and Rihanna really can't. Prince's sexual imagery came in waay behind his skills as a songwriter, composer, producer, and musician...their just the cherry on the top of the sundae; but a sundae would still be a sundae without a cherry on top. Even now at Prince's age, some of his lyrics are still risque ('Elixir' anyone), but his image totally isn't. Sexual lyrics and sexual imagery can be totally different things at the end of the day. 90s R&B was loaded with sexual lyrics, but the videos and the artist's images didn't show that, in fact you had to listen to some songs several times because you had no idea that the song was overly-sexual in content. As for Prince's many female proteges...the only ones I ever took serious (meaning they weren't 'fucking for tracks') were Wendy, Lisa, and Sheila E. because the rest really didn't have the talent to make it had they not have 'crawled into bed' with Prince. Prince's proteges were just a way for Prince to put his music out there at the end of the day and someone to keep him company. They were mostly tools; no different than the guitar he plays and the mic he sings into, but that's all just my opinion. [Edited 11/6/09 12:42pm] Prince Rogers Nelson

Lo Booty' and collagen injections in their lips to get the 'Angelina Jolie look'. To be fair, copying a hairstyle isn't going to damage anybody and I doubt young girls are the ones going into surgery considering you cannot undergo surgery unless you're 18, as far as I know. If you can prove to me girls are sexually promiscuous because, and only because, of the sexual image celebrities portray then fine, you might have a point. People make their own decisions, believe it or not. I'd much rather she kept being sexy than kept dating an abusive boyfriend in public. I really don't think her image is THAT sexual, any way, not in comparison to Britney or Beyonce at least.
Yeah, Miley bothers me. Her music is okay but her image, and her parents turning blind eyes to it, is a bit unsettling. She's only 15, at least Rihanna waited til she was an adult before she went darker and more sexual. Firstly, Prince's first album imagery really wasn't overly-sexual and nothing like what music is nowadays. Secondly, Rihanna damn sure ain't no Prince no matter how much people are saying they currently look alike.
I never mentioned music once, I'd have to be an idiot to do that. I'm talking solely about image. Prince was humping everything in sight, running around in underwear, singing about fucking his sister, masturbation, fucking the taste out of a girl's mouth, you name it, he sung it. Should HE have been concerned about his young fans or is it a non issue when it comes to male artists? Kinda insulting to compare the two of them; because, despite sexual imagery on Prince's part, he could have made it without the sexual image just fine and Rihanna really can't. Prince's sexual imagery came in waay behind his skills as a songwriter, composer, producer, and musician...their just the cherry on the top of the sundae; but a sundae would still be a sundae without a cherry on top. Even now at Prince's age, some of his lyrics are still risque ('Elixir' anyone), but his image totally isn't.
If he could've made it without that image, why'd he do it? You cannot deny that his very sexual and overt image helped grab people's attention as well as his amazing talent. His dirtiness is what set him apart from the others. You think when he first started out people took notice of his artistry? Nope, they were wondering who the little upstart humping the ground in his underpants was. I understand he got less sexual as the years went on, but really you can't watch the Darling Nikki performance and then a Rihanna performance and say ONLY Rihanna should be aware of her image. That's a double standard. Sexual lyrics and sexual imagery can be totally different things at the end of the day. 90s R&B was loaded with sexual lyrics, but the videos and the artist's images didn't show that, in fact you had to listen to some songs several times because you had no idea that the song was overly-sexual in content.
I agree, which is why I loved the 90s videos. Perfect combination of 80s talent and 90s looking forward. Plenty of female rappers, rockers, pop stars, there was a really great balance in the 90s, I think mainstream rap destroyed it though, eventually. And again, I don't think Rihanna's videos are particularly overt but who knows what's coming... [Edited 11/6/09 20:34pm]

Em the girl is pretty but she has one of the most annoying voices right now. Her only good song in my book is her first (Pon De Replay). Umbrella was OK too but it is so overplayed. I remember one night we were watching some music channel with a bunch of people then 'Run This Town' came on and this girl jumps up and says 'guys u gotta watch this song is great. I wanna buy the same top that Rihanna is wearing'. I guess that says it all. I haven't heard the new song but I don't expect anything spectacular to be honest.
Oh at least she knows who to immitate. Great immitation of Grace Jones in that single cover above my post. [Edited 11/7/09 7:59am]

Rihanna on Love, Breaking Down and Her New CD November 10, 2009 Rihanna says recording songs on her new album was such an emotional experience that she sometimes had to leave the studio to prevent herself from breaking down. "I walked out the studio a few times just trying not to be in tears," she said Monday about recording her fourth studio album, Rated R, to be released on Nov. 23. "It was about me, and so much so that songs got really personal to the point where it took three months for me to start recording it because it was too deep for me to even listen to," she said. The CD comes nine months after the 21-year-old singing sensation was attacked by ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. Rihanna said recording helped ease the pain — giving her an outlet to express how she truly felt. "I got to vent because I didn't really talk a lot. I didn't talk to a lot of people about anything I was feeling. I just did it on the record," she said. Brown was arrested Feb. 8. He was accused of beating Rihanna after they attended a pre-Grammy party. Brown later pleaded guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to five years' probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling. Following the attack, Rihanna said she was sick of sitting at home and decided to head to the studio. "I was tired of just being in the house and I just felt like I was wasting so much time and just being lackadaisical, so I just wanted to work again and we started recording," she said. Rihanna, who won a Grammy for the megahit Umbrella, says the new album's sound is darker than her previous ones because it reflects her turbulent year. "The recording experience was different because it was from a completely new mind space, from a different perspective. Usually I was thinking of fun stories, things to talk about, different topics that might be cool, but this time is really about my life," she said. She also said she's excited for fans to hear a song called Stupid In Love. "You're blinded by love, love is blind and sometimes you can't see it coming and it's just coming to the realization of the state of a relationship and just saying, 'This is not what I like. It doesn't make me happy,'" she said. Rihanna said the album is a reflection of Rihanna the woman — not the image we've come to know. "I feel like my fans, they knew me, they knew what I looked like, but they didn't really know what my personality was. They didn't really know how I think or what I stand for. They didn't really know much about me as a person. They just knew my image and the idea of me," she said. "But I wanted to give them more of who I really was because I feel like that was a connection I was missing." Rihanna credits this album with helping her look forward instead of dwelling in past. "Venting is a part of moving on, like you have to get it out no matter what, and this album for me helped me do that — being in the studio, writing, working with producers and songwriters, making music," she said. "It made it even more special that it came from my heart and my real... my feelings, the exact way I felt." http://www.usatoday.com/l...anna_N.htm

"Venting is a part of moving on, like you have to get it out no matter what, and this album for me helped me do that — being in the studio, writing, working with producers and songwriters, making music," she said. "It made it even more special that it came from my heart and my real... my feelings, the exact way I felt." http://www.usatoday.com/l...anna_N.htm Well, yeah, from the review I read, this is definitely a darker CD. The review on Rap Radar said it was a good CD with maybe two bad songs. We'll see....the way Rihanna explained it, this was simply the CD she had to make at this time. She had a hand in the writing and it was therapeutic. GGGB was more pop and a bit sunnier and sweeter than what I've heard from this CD. She had that smash lead single, new haircut, vid etc. But, you gotta play the hand dealt to you. And although GGGB was appealing, it also felt cold and abstract. There really wasn't a sense of who she was on that CD. If she is able to give a better sense of her personality with this CD, it might be a necessary step for her, even if it is dark in tone. I see her video for "Russian Roulette" and Chris' video for "Crawl" will premiere on the same day. Ugh. "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."

Interesting preview. Thanks for posting. I think it will air Friday, along with a follow up/reaction to her interview.
I posted this on the other thread, but since this one is up now, I'll post it here where it belongs lol Looks like "Russian Roulette" has taken off. It went from #100 to #75 and jumped to #9 this week (her single "Hard" debuted on the R&B charts at #45). Maybe radio jumped on it after the interview or something. Here's a couple reviews--Funny, they both mention the song Justin Timberlake co-wrote.: per Billboard: http://www.billboard.com/...1841.story Rihanna Rides Emotional Rollercoaster On 'Rated R'
After the "Mad House" intro, "Rated R" takes off with the leaked tracks "Wait Your Turn" and the Jeezy-assisted "Hard," both which feature Rihanna singing tough girl lyrics like, "I'm such a fucking lady" in her Island twang and "the hottest bitch in heels right here" over an epic piano pattern, respectively. "Stupid In Love" follows. The heartfelt ballad finds Rihanna belting, "I still love you, but I just can't do this / I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid... you don't know what you lost, and you won't realize it till I'm gone / that I'm the one," atop a pulsating beat. Next up is the bass-heavy, electric-guitar-laden "Rock Star," which features former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Rihanna revels in her bad girl rebellion, crooning, "Got my middle finger up / I don't really give a fuck." The album's first single, the gritty track "Russian Roulette," follows. "Firebomb" ends with a siren blaring while "Rudeboy" finds her singing about having a sexual rendezvous with her love interest over kick drums. The will.i.am duet, "Photographs," is one of the album's stand-out tracks, as Rihanna laments over a lost relationship. "I don't want to be stuck in the past but you're all that I had / why couldn't you be the one," she questions over static drums. Rihanna taps into her bad girl antics on "G4L" (the acronym is short for "Gangster For Life") once again, as she flirtatiously warns, "any motherf--kers want to disrespect / we don't play that shit," over double speed drums. Meanwhile, "Te Amo" caters to Rihanna's international fanbase with its flamenco guitars and handclaps. The album ends with the bonus track, "The Last Song," but not before the outstanding closer "Cold Case Love," with its escalating production infused with a simple piano pattern, thumping bassline, violin strings and ultimately, electric guitar licks. GQ: The Best Song on the New Rihanna Album Was Written with Justin Timberlake
Okay, fine. It's one of the great songs on the new Rihanna album, Rated R. I went and heard it at her record label yesterday. Two key points that stick out after just one front-to-back listen: First of all, Rihanna attacked this new album aggressively. She says "motherfucker," "bitches" and the N-word on it (sorry, Oprah). It's got violent revenge fantasies. And sex fantasies. Often she seems to be singing directly to Chris Brown. And sonically, it can be brutally dark. If her mentor Jay-Z pops up on a remix of one of these tracks (let's hope it's "Rock Star"), he definitely won't be referring to her as "Little Miss Sunshine" again. And you're damn right this thing is getting a Parental Advisory sticker. The second key to Rated R: The album reminds you in no uncertain terms that Ri-Ri isn't an R&B singer. She's a pop star, and pop stardom requires musical versatility. She does Kelly Clarkson pop-punk ("Firebomb"). She does hip-hop heavy R&B ("Hard" featuring Young Jeezy). She does a dancehall-referencing club anthem ("Rudeboy"). And she takes a page from Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana" playbook and borrows heavily from hard rock ("Rock Star" featuring Slash). But our favorite track is the sweeping, grandiose, almost ludicrously over-stuffed and endless album closer "Cold Case Love," written with Justin Timberlake. A little bit Phil Collins, a little bit Lionel Richie, a lot bit Justin Timberlake's "Losin My Way," the song is epic, evocative, on-message (eat shit, Chris Brown) and just plain catchy. It's like, CALL JUSTIN AND TELL HIM TO BRING THE PLATINUM-PLATED KITCHEN SINK. Yes! That's exactly what you want from the most anticipated pop album on planet earth. Rated R comes out November 23rd.
