OTOH, I think it probably has the best remixes. I only gave the album a real shot after hearing and loving Remixed & Revisited. Those mixes really give the songs new life. In addition to those, I also love the Thin White Duke remix of "Hollywood" and the Oakenfold Downtempo Remix of "American Life." What are your favorites? is this serious? I love her sad songs! "Miles Away" is her latest song in that vein.I want more of this from Madonna: vulnerability, honesty, sadness! I want more lyrics that are based on what she's going through in her personal life. I also love the production of this song.Unlike "4 Minutes",this song allows Madonna to shine without being overshadowed.Justin Timberlake adds backup vocals and does a great job arranging the harmonies and Timbaland creates a smooth acoustic/electronic backdrop, but they step back and allow Madonna to tell her (very personal) tale.Madonna has done other songs in this musical style ("I Deserve It","Love Profusion") but I think this song is superior.I also like how the song starts off as an acoustic pop number, then at the end,Timbaland takes it to the club with a big, hard beat. It's a perfect midtempo pop song, imo. I agree. When I first heard it, I felt let down because it sounded so simple and people (SoulAlive) were raving about it! But it grew on me over time and I now love it. It's easily my favorite song on that album and one of my favorite Madonna songs. There's something about it that feels incredibly honest, authentic, real. She's not showing off, or trying to be cool and cute. It's pretty close to a pure expression. And seeing her play it live two days after the public announcement of her divorce really drove that home for me. When I first heard it,I was shocked at the lyrics. She was going around denying that her marriage was in trouble and yet here she is in this song, basically confirming that her marriage is over.Laying it all out there.I was surprised by that. The line "All my dreams they fade away,I'll never be the same" is particularly sad to me.I'm a sucker for a sad melody and heartbreak lyrics, lol.

Madonna's A&R is so fucked up for such a major star. Only Janet's is worse
and maybe Prince's Anyway, they should have just been smart and stuck to the Immaculate formula - it's her biggest record! 1990 Immaculate Collection Rescue Me NEW Justify My Love NEW then, prior to Music, in 2000 they should have done something that looked more like this (let something to remember stand on its own! The rock version of American Life cannot be taken seriously. However the rock version of Let It Will Be is absolutely great. Much much better than the original. I can't really say I love any of the live rock versions of older songs but they are fun to listen to (the studio versions not the youtube live versions lol). You're right; "bad" doesn't even begin to describe how diabolically horrible that song is. I think True Blue had the best set of singles from any Madonna album. However the other 4 songs on that album are so bad that overall I would say True Blue is the worst Madonna studio album ever. Who ever had the genious idea of singing a stupidly happy song with the lyrics There Is Hunger Everywhere? lol [Edited 8/21/09 5:50am]

I think they're all better than the originals. A lot of the problems I had with the songs initially are fixed: the "Nothing Fails" remix removes that choir (it just doesn't work well in this song) and the "American Life" remix makes that ridiculous rap semi-tolerable (although I prefer the Oakenfold remix without the rap). Well, I completed my ideal 3-disc singles compilation of Madonna's career. I tried to include all of the big hits while keeping a balance. I killed me to cut "Angel" and "Gambler," but there wasn't enough room. I had no problem cutting "American Pie" because it sucks.
