here's what I came up with for the single disc:

Into The Groove
Music
Vogue
4 Minutes
Holiday
Like A Virgin
Live To Tell
Ray Of Light
Like A Prayer
Papa Don't Preach
Hung Up
Beautiful Stranger
Die Another Day
Borderline
Who's That Girl
Take A Bow
La Isla Bonita
Celebration

I think we were very lucky to get "Who's That Girl" on the 2 CD set. I would be shocked if it appears on the 1 disc one.

I also would be really surprised if both new tracks don't appear on both CDs.

Celebration
Holiday
Lucky Star
Like A Virgin
Live To Tell
Papa Don't Preach
Like A Prayer
Express Yourself
Vogue
Justify My Love
Take A Bow
Secret
Ray Of Light
Music
Die Another Day
Hung Up
4 Minutes
Miles Away (doesn't make any sense on the 2 disc....shouldn't make any fucking sense here either)
Revolver

If Into The Groove, Beautiful Stranger, Celebration and Revolver appear on the single disc I am buying the single disc

I disagree, Erotica is far from an universal fan fav. And if you wanna go charts and sales, then HC has the edge because Erotica followed one of her most successful eras ever yet it didn't even sell half of what LAP did and there were no illegal downloads, and at least HC yielded a bonafide hit. Erotica's by no means a lesser "clunker" era than AL or HC. It's not the critics who didn't buy Erotica, neither it was radio who didn't support (unlike AL & HC), in fact the title track broke a radio record, it might have been her most hyped release ever.

But that era has a bad reputation and while "Deeper And Deeper" was played on the radio and fans might love it (unlike later HC singles that was NOT played by radio), it won't make it an essential track, neither the artist should downplay her current work to include it. "Miles Away" was a UK flop (which actually has nothing to do with her being loved or not) but nothing on Erotica did as well as "Miles Away" did in Japan. This is not a US/UK chart compilation. Obviously the "changed the world" is a hype thing, but I don't see how it would apply any of the Erotica tracks. The SEX book did change the world though, but not the music of that era.

Well it is of course all subjective, but Erotica has been viewed highly favourably in retrospect.....as Hard Candy may well be - however, the HC era is different. I remember the savagery of alot of the backlash against her in 92-93. Erotica is streets ahead of HC & AL both lyrically and musically, and it performed badly due to the complete over reaction to all the other stuff she was doing. Nobody talked about the album at all. If she'd have released Deeper & Deeper in 1990 it'd have been a number 1 single.

HC & AL are both good enough records, but performed badly because they're not great records. Erotica in my opinion performed badly because of all the controversy swirling round her career in 1992.

Well it's kind of sad for Madonna to try to downplay "Erotica" and hype up "Hard Candy", which fans MIGHT like better later. Say what you want, but to defend two tracks on "Hard Candy" and only one on "Erotica" is disgusting.

"Hard Candy". Fah!

Nope, it never works like that. People judge on the record based on the singles (nowadays it's only the first single for most albums) and the perception of the the artist/promo. It was the same case for Erotica, people were caught up in the bad press with Madonna but the title track only reinforced the assumptions about it being a "sex album" and they didn't want a collection of JML's. Same for AL and the anti-American stuff. For HC there was no bad press or backlash, just that Warner or Madonna did nothing to make people buy the album so they went with the single.

I definitely agree about D&D being a #1 single if it wasn't for SEX or "Erotica", surely it was a safe song for her. But I don't think you can be unbiased about how Erotica was viewed in retrospect by the fans, not only because that was mostly a different set of fans back then, but there was no internet that gave a room for expectations to run wild. The HC "fan backlash" was greatly exaggerated by a group of loud fans online who couldn't get over the expectations they raised for her. Those who simply did not enjoy it, were never that loud. There are plenty of HC admirers among her online fanbase too.

Anyway, on Tribe the webmasters wrote that the versions are indeed being reconsidered since Warner was bombarded with complaints. The songs themselves are NOT changing though.

"Hard Candy" is not an awful record but if we are going to be realistic about how "Miles Away", it's being a number one single in Japan means that "Spotlight", a much beleoved Madonna track that I hear on the radio more than "Miles Away", should be on on there. It's honestly typical Madonna bullshit. I realized the set wasn't going to be perfect YET for it to come so close yet make a strange omossion (or at the very least under representation) and yet pack in the later stuff ("Hollywood" and "Miles Away'...I'll give you "Sorry" because it was an apologetic Euro smash and was probably a more successful second single than either "Hollywood" or "Give It 2 Me"). I hope her arms get all fleshy now! I'm sending her a chocolate cake....with butter cream!

nod I think it's better than those two as well as Erotica, True Blue, Bedtime Stories, and Like a Virgin. It doesn't have the standouts that those ones have, but I think it's a better listen overall.

Hard Candy sucks. Worst album of Madonna along with American Life.

Every album of Madonna prior to 2000 is excellent in their own way.

Erotica has really well made songs. Much better than any of the mediocre songs Madonna has put out in recent times.

Oh yeah, I forget to say, that Confessions on the Dance Floor is Madonna's best album post 2000.

That's the only album I liked, but I just wasn't impressed from her songs from American Life or Hard Candy.

So the bad outweighs the good sadly.

All three are very shaky...and all three have two cuts represented on there (OK, "Music" had two genuine big hits, one that showed some dimensions from her). 2000 on has not been her highmark but "Celeberation" suggests that it was only 1992 was the year where nothing was going on! Maybe if "This Used To Be My Playground" on was there it would make sense, but honestly, its just a gross rewrite of history. And even if that box set comes true, she'll tinker with it. If fans had any say in this, they wouldn't take "Miles Away" over "Deeper and Deeper" (or "Hollywood" over "This Used To Be My Plaground"...Hell, "Jimmy, Jimmy" was a bigger hit!).

no, at the time it was a really great release and it is a very good listen.

but over time, it's become a little irritating that her biggest, most definitive greatest hits record doesn't contain the original hit versions. at this point, it makes for a great remix album, but it's needed to be replaced for a long time.

No, no, it's actually borderline excellent! Unlike most fans, I don't mind most of the remixes (with "Holiday" and "Into the Groove" being major exceptions). I greatly prefer the "Express Yourself" remix (as I'm sure is clear by now). My biggest gripe is the absence of some songs (mainly "Who's That Girl" and "Causing a Commotion").

"Angel" straddles the line between pop and dance, so I could see changing it. "Erotica" isn't pop or dance (really), so I thought it'd be best as part of a budoir one-two punch of the ballads disc to give it a little spice.

I hated this song when it first came out, because I thought it hit a little too close to home for me and the life I had lived for the previous few years.

Over time, though, I've realized I hate it because it's just not very good and it puts me to sleep. Thank god for the radio edit! lol

It's one of those songs I heard the first time and thought "Obvious single rolleyes" very much like "Hollywood," and was really hoping she/WB would surprise us. The real surprise came when "Beat Goes On" wasn't released. It's very discouraging to see that both of those songs, as boring as they are and not to mention the fact that they are NOT HITS, are deemed worthy of making her definitive greatest hits album. With the inclusion of these and the IC remixes, it's clear that she (and WB) has awful taste in her own material.

Hell, after hearing the 2 new songs, I'd be even happier with NO new songs on it, and wish they had just held back "Beat Goes On" as a single to promote this set. Themeatically, it fits in title and lyrics. And it's just a great song. And the closest thing she was going to get to having a bona fide hit in the US.

Very dissatisfied with this entire project. I'm hoping the DVD at least goes some way toward redeeming it from being a total wash.

Oh well. Better luck next time...
