JoeTyler said: Today I've realized that Warner could have (and should have) taken more risks, but no, they have only included hits (85%) and singles here; I mean, look at Hollywood for example: it's just an average alternative-rock/electronic song and it was a complete flop as a single, but it will be included only because it was a single, while the TRULY best tracks from American Life are neglected: Nobody knows me, X-static process or I'm so stupid...
Anyway, the inclussion of Burning Up and Everybody is an extremely bold move, so we can't really complain... Anf for errant: yeah, Rain and D&D could have been included using more edited versions...a shame... Songs that could have been included in a 3CD box: -Angel -True blue -Causing a commotion -Where's the party (YCD version) -Oh father -Dear Jessie -Keep it together -Deeper and deeper ( ) -Rain -Human nature -Bedtime story -Don't cry for me Argentina -Drowned world -Nothing really matters -What it feels like for a girl -American Life -Get together -Give it to me I think the omission of "This Used to Be My Playground", "I'll Remember" and "You'll See" is a bigger story than any of those missing, but I'd love to have a 3rd disc of the ones I mentioned plus most of the ones you mentioned and "Gambler". Why so concerned about "Deeper..."? I understand it was one of her few dance tracks back in the day (and thus, on GHV2), but she has several more essential dance tunes since then. Plus including it alongside "Vogue" would have looked weird, with the lyric-sample and the similar beats. Love the Re-Invention version though.

But "Vogue" and "JML" do that more, and they were far bigger hits and made impact. "D&D" was a radio hit alright but not sure how it reached "classic" status. AlexdeParis: I think "edit" implies it's the version that was on the TIC DVD, which is shorter than the album version. The actual remix would have been called "video remix" or something, I might be wrong though. Not that it matters, because either of them would be FANTASTIC if included!

Besides, it's considerably less weird than having "Justify My Love" and "Erotica" side by side. At any rate, Erotica needs a second song. you can get around the shared lyrics of Vogue and Deeper and Deeper by putting them on different discs. or using them as the first and last track on a disc to give it a thematic opening and closing for a disc, sort of like coming full circle before moving on to the next disc.
and wouldn't it be a kicker if the single disc verion had different songs on it? or different versions? like all single edits just to fit as many tracks as possible on one disc? that would be both infuriating and gratifying

Why? Because "Erotica", which fans loved but critics, the media and casual fans hated, is only represented by one track. While "Hard Candy", which was saved from being totally forgotten only by her tour has two tracks. That's not a good balance. if you are going to represent her career, you can do it better than by trying to hype up one of her biggest clunkers. It did change the world....what other Madonna track would barely crack the Top 40 in the UK where she is loved. It's also got a great disco sound and it's lyrics are great (even without the "Vogue" reference). Than again, it's typical Madonna bullshit to screw the project up by including questionable tracks over bigger and better ones (as well as including shitty versions of songs).

I disagree, Erotica is far from an universal fan fav. And if you wanna go charts and sales, then HC has the edge because Erotica followed one of her most successful eras ever yet it didn't even sell half of what LAP did and there were no illegal downloads, and at least HC yielded a bonafide hit. Erotica's by no means a lesser "clunker" era than AL or HC. It's not the critics who didn't buy Erotica, neither it was radio who didn't support (unlike AL & HC), in fact the title track broke a radio record, it might have been her most hyped release ever. But that era has a bad reputation and while "Deeper And Deeper" was played on the radio and fans might love it (unlike later HC singles that was NOT played by radio), it won't make it an essential track, neither the artist should downplay her current work to include it. "Miles Away" was a UK flop (which actually has nothing to do with her being loved or not) but nothing on Erotica did as well as "Miles Away" did in Japan. This is not a US/UK chart compilation. Obviously the "changed the world" is a hype thing, but I don't see how it would apply any of the Erotica tracks. The SEX book did change the world though, but not the music of that era.

Well it is of course all subjective, but Erotica has been viewed highly favourably in retrospect.....as Hard Candy may well be - however, the HC era is different. I remember the savagery of alot of the backlash against her in 92-93. Erotica is streets ahead of HC & AL both lyrically and musically, and it performed badly due to the complete over reaction to all the other stuff she was doing. Nobody talked about the album at all. If she'd have released Deeper & Deeper in 1990 it'd have been a number 1 single. HC & AL are both good enough records, but performed badly because they're not great records. Erotica in my opinion performed badly because of all the controversy swirling round her career in 1992.
