Oi! Rick James fans in here please!

OK,

Know almost nothing about Rick, wanted to start exploring.

First, can you guys recommend/build a playlist of all of his up-tempo/dance tracks that i can play at work?

Also is "the definitive collection" worth buying?

THX!

Yeah 'Street Songs' is Rick's masterpiece.I remember in the summer of '81,this was THE ALBUM to have.Everywhere I went, people were playing those songs.Rick was on fire with that album! It's his most inspired, most satisfying work. The 2-CD Deluxe Edition is a must-have.In additon to the regular album (remastered and sounding great),you get bonus 12" versions of "Give It To Me Baby" and "SuperFreak".The 12" extended version of "Super Freak" puts the album version to shame.Soooo funky!! You also get very good liner notes,an essay, and lots of rare photos.

As if all this wasn't enough, you get another whole disc containing a live recording from Long Beach,CA.It's from the Street Songs tour,in the summer 1981.This is a lengthy, hot, sweaty performance that sizzles!! Rick is at the top of his game here. He's got the audience in the palm of his hands.I wish I had been at that show! Teena Marie appears at one point and performs "Square Biz".During this tour,Rick and Teena routinely performed a version of "Fire And Desire" that lasted over 20 minutes (!) but unfortunately,it's not included here.No problem, though.

Seriously, this is one of the most amazing Deluxe Edition sets I've ever purchased.Alot of care and attention went into it.Hopefully, other Rick James albums will get the same treatment.Shame on Prince for not doing the same with some of his classic albums.

I bought this compilation awhile back and I'm slightly disappointed with it.On the surface,it looks like a great compilation, but looks can be deceiving. The set has many flaws. On the plus side,it includes rare jams like "Fire It Up","Come Into My Life" and "Sweet And Sexy Thing",songs that other compilations always ignore for some reason. But why does it have to include tedious, meandering slow jams like "When Love Has Gone" and "Island Lady" instead of the superior fan favorite "Spacey Love"?? And the single edit of "17"(included here) is lame compared to the full-length version.Yeah,I know I'm nit-picking,lol,but when it comes to Rick James, there's no excuse for mistakes when putting together a compilation of his music.

Much better is the 1994 release 'Bustin Out:The Best of Rick James',another 2-CD compilation. The version of "Big Time" included here is superior to the flat version found on the 'Anthology' set.Another plus: it includes the 1978 slow jam "Dream Maker",one of the strongest songs from Rick's debut album.

How can you say that 'When Love is Gone' is a tedious, meandering slow jam. That is one of Rick's finest jams. It really shows off his creativity. I like the course that the song runs. The 'Fire It Up' album was dope, I wish they'd re-release this album as well.

With the exception of "Big Time",I never really cared for the 'Garden Of Love' album. It's mostly a snoozefest, imo boxed Agree with you about the 'Fire It Up' album.I've grown to really appreciate that album,in recent years.

If Motown REALLY wanted to, they could put out a "ballads" collection by Rick James. Now THAT would be the hit!!!!! My friend put one together for his Dad last year, and his Dad wears it out!!!!!

I have most of Rick James' CD's and Albums, and have had my eye on this "Deluxe Edition" for some time now. But I actually purchased it tonight based on your review. I'm happy to finally have it in my collection, and am sure I won't be disappointed when I finally get to actually listen to it. It really is an understatement when I express my appreciation for The Org, and the way in which there is never an end to the great musical suggestions. Never a shortage of opinionated reviews either, lol .

Incidentally, while I was purchasing this CD package, I learned that Warner Bros. has deleted it's entire Prince catalog, with as of yet no planned date to reissue his catalog. Probably Old News for The Org, but I just hope that if Warner Bros. DOES reissue the Prince catalog, that they remaster it first (maybe that's already in the works). Make sure you've got your "Dirty Mind", "Lovesexy", and "Controversy" CD's now! They may be going the way of so many other great CD's and Albums from back in the day - OUT OF PRINT!!!

Got around to checking it out last night and tonight - you weren't kidding! This is truly a Deluxe Edition. The live stuff on Disc 2 made you feel like you were right there in that Long Beach crowd in 1981. That audience was Hyped-Up! The energy level just tells you how Rick was on top of his game - THAT was his era (and MINE! cool ).

Overall: An excellent investment in The Funk.

This is definitely worth checking out. I actually had to buy it a second time because I lost it my junior year in college; and after searching through hell and high water, could not find it again so I bought another copy. It is a high energy performance that won't leave anyone disappointed.

Considering Rick James LPs contain less than 10 songs, you can get his entire collection. The music is funky. His horn section was amazing. However, if you only want to get to releases, I recommend:

1. Come and Get It! Mary Jane is the cut. I didn't know what he was talking about when it came out, but found out years later.

2. Street Songs is the best Rick James album/release. It did when the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Interestingly, these shows were recorded for a 2-LP "Live" album that Motown wanted to release just in time for Christmas '81.It would have been a nice way to cap off an extraordinary year for Rick, but I think he cancelled those plans. He was eager to concentrate on his next album 'Throwin Down'.
