The live stuff on Disc 2 made you feel like you were right there in that Long Beach crowd in 1981. That audience was Hyped-Up! The energy level just tells you how Rick was on top of his game

I love the breakdown of "Big Time" when Rick gets angry at the "cool people" who think it's old fashoned to clap lol

"I'm gon' break it down for you....you paid TOO MUCH MONEY to come in here and sit on your asses"

Later on,he gets pissed at these same people again lol I can't believe that folks would be sitting down at a Rick James show.

You know, ever since this was first posted, I dug up a shyt load of stuff that contained him going as far back as when he was in the Buffalo Springfield, with Neil Young. I have rediscovered gems like, "Moon Child", "Sucker For Love", as well as the stuff that he played and wrote for other people...I just found the long version of the Mary Jane Girls, "All Night Long"...This one contains the extended sax solo. Yes, he was a character but he is the only people that I know that created his OWN style of music, punkFunk. I have yet to hear anything like it. Prince's music is not like Ricks.

I thank you, for Re-opening my eyes to him.

Get this immediately:

The slickest and best one he ever made with deluxe treatment!

Yeah 'Street Songs' is Rick's masterpiece.I remember in the summer of '81,this was THE ALBUM to have.Everywhere I went, people were playing those songs.Rick was on fire with that album! It's his most inspired, most satisfying work. The 2-CD Deluxe Edition is a must-have.In additon to the regular album (remastered and sounding great),you get bonus 12" versions of "Give It To Me Baby" and "SuperFreak".The 12" extended version of "Super Freak" puts the album version to shame.Soooo funky!! You also get very good liner notes,an essay, and lots of rare photos.

As if all this wasn't enough, you get another whole disc containing a live recording from Long Beach,CA.It's from the Street Songs tour,in the summer 1981.This is a lengthy, hot, sweaty performance that sizzles!! Rick is at the top of his game here. He's got the audience in the palm of his hands.I wish I had been at that show! Teena Marie appears at one point and performs "Square Biz".During this tour,Rick and Teena routinely performed a version of "Fire And Desire" that lasted over 20 minutes (!) but unfortunately,it's not included here.No problem, though.

Seriously, this is one of the most amazing Deluxe Edition sets I've ever purchased.Alot of care and attention went into it.Hopefully, other Rick James albums will get the same treatment.Shame on Prince for not doing the same with some of his classic albums.

This IS an incredible set. I am in complete agreement.

For what it is worth, I STILL long to see "Street Songs" get a conventional Deluxe 2CD treatment - meaning a second disc with mad crazy outtakes and songs that didn't make it and alternate versions and instrumentals as opposed to live material. Not that the live material is not awesome - it IS. The gold starndard for the conventional treatment IMO is the Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On" deluxe remaster 2CD...the amount and quality of unearthed bonus material was truly mindblowing. The stuff on their was so utterly amazing. If they could do that for "Street Songs"... eek

Several months ago,I heard that plans are already in the works for "Deluxe Editions" of some of Rick's classic albums. Also, there is alot of newer material that Rick recorded a few years ago, before his death. Some of these songs made it onto the 'Deeper Still' album, but there are many more songs.

I ALSO KNOW A RECORDING ENGINEER FROM BACK HOME (BUFFALO, NY) WHO WAS WELL CONNECTED WITHIN THE RICK JAMES CAMP BACK IN THE DAY. AND HE TOLD ME & MY BAND THAT THE STUFF YOU HEAR ON THE LP's/CD's IS TAME COMPARED TO WHAT WAS ACTUALLY RECORDED!!!!
SO PLEEEEEAAAAASE PUT OUT DELUXE EDITIONS OF:

-COME GET IT
-BUSTIN' OUT OF L7
-FIRE IT UP
-THROWIN' DOWN
-COLD BLOODED

NOT SO MUCH GARDEN OF LOVE, GLOW, AND THE FLAG, BUT IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THANGZ IT WOULD BE COOL!!!!!

OR EVEN A BOX SET?????
COME ON MOTOWN!!!!!

A box set is long overdue. There's so much stuff they could include.Rick has a few early singles that many fans don't even know about...

*"My Mama"---a 1974 single on A&M Records
*"Get Up And Dance"---a 1976 single

There's also the unreleased 'Kickin' album from 1989,and in 1986 he had started work on a third Mary Jane Girls album titled 'Conversation',which remains unreleased.

the title track was indeed the song that Rick was gonna give to the Mary Jane Girls.Interestingly enough, the song "In My House" was originally intended for Val,but Motown insisted that Rick give it to the Mary Jane Girls instead. These days,Val is actually touring with three original members of the Mary Jane Girls. They have a myspace page.JoJo (the original lead singer) tours with two new singers, billing herself as "JoJo of the Mary Jane Girls".

Warner Bros. didn't wanna release it.They didn't think it was very good. They actually wanted Rick to go into the studio with Al B.Sure (!) and make a New Jack Swing-type album confused Rick said "No way!!" and they terminated his contract.I haven't heard the album, but it's easy to find on file-sharing sites. It leaked several years ago.

That's bad news. They should throw those new songs in the trash and release some old unreleased songs instead (if any exist).

Can't say anything else that hasn't already been said about the man. I've loved Rick all of my life. Had the good fortune of seeing Rick in his prime during his Street Songs period. Rick RULED in the early 80's. During the year of 81 and early 82, Rick was hotter than Michael. Mike would take care of that shit when he released Thriller BUT in 81, NOBODY could touch Rick. That album was everywhere. Rick was really the next black rock star, since Hendrix. And in many ways, he was the FIRST black rock star to black kids. Rick even reached the white crowd, something Parliament never really did. So Rick was in that rare position of truly having the black audience, the street cred. Which was crucial. AND he had the pop crowd and many of the white rock audiences dug Rick. Rick had a good artistic run from 78 to 81. His albums after that, although he had some jams, weren't as consistent. Drugs and fame, like Sly Stone, had totally caught Rick with his drawers down. Pity really cuz I would have loved to have seen Rick at the top of his game in 82-85. Although Street Songs is his masterpiece, my fave albums by him is definately his debut, Bustin Out and Fire It Up.

Yes the definitive collection is worth buying. As for all his uptempo songs (slow not included) here's a list of his finest and baddest stuff to put on a cd or cds. Take a look at this list:

Give It To Me Baby
Superfreak
Fire It Up
You And I
17
Cold-Blooded
Bustin' Out
Loosey's Rap
Wonderful
Dance With Me
U Bring The Freak Out
Be My Lady
Pass The Joint
Call Me Up
Standing On The Top
Glow
Can't Stop
Love Gun
Ghetto Life

I think that's enough to get you started.
Peace and be wild!

I understand you're a seasoned musician, and a veteran Funkateer, but have you been to a Parliament concert recently? Like in the past 20 years? Over half of the audience is White (at least the shows I've attended in New York and Los Angeles - about two dozen of them before I lost count), and they seem very familiar with the repertoire. I assume you're speaking about back in the day, when P-Funk got very little airplay (prior to the mid-80's).
