The Most Underrated Stevie Wonder Song Of All Time

No arguments. No debate. This is one of the best tracks Stevie ever did, but is overlooked because it came after his golden period.

This IS a true classic.

Hell, most of Stevie's work is classic!

Yeah, but most people hardly mention it because it wasn't on one of his iconic albums. Point blank, this song can go toe to toe with anything he did in the 70s.

I said no arguments, no debate. There is no debate to be had. This is his most underrated song. Case closed.

Well, if you're looking for Stevie's best album outside of the '70s through Hotter Than July, it's Characters by a long shot.

Anyway, it's a fantastic but underrated song on an underrated album. "Most underrated"? Hmm...

I see midnightmover's point, re: underrated songs from underrated albums, but I tend to agree that "Tuesday Heartbreak" is atop the "all-time" underrated list. I might put "You Got It Bad Girl" ahead of "T.H." with "Maybe Your Baby" coming in a slight third.

I thought about it some more. How about most underrated song per album? Here's a first pass:

Sunshine in Their Eyes
Happier Than the Morning Sun
You've Got It Bad Girl
Jesus Children of America
Please Don't Go
All Day Sucker
Black Orchid
As If You Read My Mind
Front Line
I Love You Too Much
Free

Amen! This is my second favorite Stevie Wonder song, after another song from after his peak, "My Eyes Don't Cry"! I was thinking of "Free" when I read the title of this thread.

All Day Sucker is a jaym...the funkiness of it..the Michael Jackson influential vocals..U know Mike musta played this one over and over. And Prince played "Tuesday Heartbreak" while playing his acoustic guitar.

Great song indeed. I haven´t heard it before.

That shot of the lady washing her little baby is just sooooo...cute in a way - the baby screaming since the water is cold probably.... The video is great and touching overall.

Care to offer your suggestions? I was thinking I could've said "He's Misstra Know It All" or "Visions" for Innervisions.

Innervisions is such a complete album politics religion social issues, for me and it's hard to imagine this album having a song that's underrated, but if I were to list one it would be "Jesus Children Of America".

Here Stevie is, performing his most underrated song in England in the late 80s.

Nevermind Shakespeare. This is pure poetry.

"Free"

Free like the river
Flowin' freely through infinity
Free to be sure of
What I am and who I need not be
Free from all worries
Worries prey on oneself's troubled mind
Freer than the clock's hands
Tickin' away the times
Freer than the meaning of free that man defines
Life running through me
Till I feel my father God has called

Me having nothin'
But possessing riches more than all
And I'm free
To be nowhere
But every place I need to be
Freer than a sunbeam
Shining through my soul
Free from feelin' heat or knowing bitter cold
Free from conceiving the beginning
For that's the infinite start

I'm gone but still living
Life goes on without a beating heart

Free like a vision
That the mind of only you can see

Freer than a raindrop
Falling from the sky
Freer than a smile in a baby's sleepin' eyes

I'm free like a river
Flowin' freely through infinity
Free like the river
My life goes on and on through infinity
“The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I think Stevie for being blind can see deeper and wider than many of us with eyescan. I truley believe he is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Many of his songs have touched me so much by thier lyrics alone. And when he puts music to it...only thing I can say is .....genius! cool

Perhaps but probably even more likely he got the helium voices from his P-Funk addiction.

True. Just take a couplet like "Freer than a raindrop falling from the sky/ Freer than a smile in a baby's sleeping eyes". You'd have to be the philistine of all time not to see how great that is. And what about "I'm gone but still living/ Life goes on without a beating heart"? Stevie ain't even limited to this life. He's thinking about the next one. Tracks like "All Day Sucker" and "Boogie On Reggae Woman" may be funky, but they do not reach those depths.
