I think Stevie for being blind can see deeper and wider than many of us with eyescan. I truley believe he is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Many of his songs have touched me so much by thier lyrics alone. And when he puts music to it...only thing I can say is .....genius! cool
[Edited 11/14/07 10:11am]

True. Just take a couplet like "Freer than a raindrop falling from the sky/ Freer than a smile in a baby's sleeping eyes". You'd have to be the philistine of all time not to see how great that is. And what about "I'm gone but still living/ Life goes on without a beating heart"? Stevie ain't even limited to this life. He's thinking about the next one. Tracks like "All Day Sucker" and "Boogie On Reggae Woman" may be funky, but they do not reach those depths.

So true

U should start a thread of the greatest lyrics Stevie has come up with. I could go on and on! wink

Great song indeed. I haven´t heard it before.

That shot of the lady washing her little baby is just sooooo...cute in a way - the baby screaming since the water is cold probably.... The video is great and touching overall.

It's from 1987's Characters album which also features a duet with your man Mike ("Get It"). The other all-time classic song on the album is "You Will Know". A song which most artists would give their whole careers for.

I know. It´s funny because Charactres is the only Stevie Wonder album that I have. I bought it because of that duet with Mike, but when I listened to the album for the first time I didn´t like it at all. I was very dissapointed because it had a typical sound of the 80´s for me, which I didn´t like. I didn´t bother listening to the album afterwards, so when I found out that this song is from this album I decided to give it a thorough listen and fell in love with some of the songs, so thanks guys for making me rediscover something that I have already had at home. lol

Is it under rated, because of the subject matter and the video that goes along with it or because it is just a great song?

Sometimes,a video can make a so so song, even more powerful. To me,songs like, "Loves in need of love today", and "Village Ghetto Land", are far more powerful than this song. Why, because, without the use of video, these songs force us to use our own imagination to create the images that he is singing about.

To me, "Free", plays like a UNICEF PSA, with music. Does very little for me.

Dumbest post so far by a mile. Dude, I never even saw the video until about a minute before I started this thread. I couldn't care less about the video. The video actually has nothing to do with the song. The song is not about social justice, or the plight of Africans. It's about a much deeper freedom that has nothing to do with the material world. As Stevie puts it "I'm much freer than the meaning of free that man defines".

Joy Inside My Tears is quite obviously the most underrated (and possibly greatest) Stevie Wonder song of all time! It annoys the bejeezez out of me that it never gets a mention.

Actually, the video has to do with human suffering as well as being free from the material world. So, mine is not a dumb post. Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of the song.

Yes, the video has to do with human suffering, but nothing to do with being free from the material world. The song does, but the video doesn't. You obviously fell into the classic trap of getting the video confused with the song in your mind. The very fact you said it plays like a UNICEF PSA shows you obviously just saw the images of Africans, heard the word "free" and totally misread the song as a result. That's partly the video director's fault for distorting and limiting the song's message, but as an orger you should know better than to judge a book by it's cover.

I actually think your man gives Steve a damn good ass-kicking on both of their duets. Moreso on JGF though than GI, though Mike enters that song like a thunderbolt too.

I haven't heard OOAK in ages. I tend to just target my favourites. "In Your Corner", and "You Will Know" are the ones that get the most spins from me (after "Free" of course).

Yeah, I love MJ´s voice. He just gives songs energy and the right feeling He somehow makes all songs sound great. Even Somebody´s watching me. I don´t think the refrain would be so catchy if Rockwell sang it.

It's simple. I think your man is singing better than Steve on those duets, particularly "Just Good Friends". Mike just sounds out of this fucking world, whereas Stevie sounds a little bit winey.

Whoa. Seriously? I thought stevie brought way more attitude to the lyrics, just listen to how he riffs at the end, or he brings his louis armstrong impression; infact he isn't even try to sing high and nasal like on some of his post 80's output; I guess that my opinion though.
