Is Today's Music REALLY that horrific?

Just my two cents on this forum :

I feel like no one can admit openly to liking music released this millenium without 10 posters jumping on them saying how crap or "shit hop" it is.

I KNOW a lot of it is drivel and shouldn't be released, but that doesn't mean EVERYTHING is and it doesn't mean people should be teased or seen as any less for liking it. I'm not talking about Akon or Sean Kingston crapola. I'm talking about Nelly Furtado, Beyonce, The Neptunes. Artists today with a bit of flair and individuality, but still get lumped into the same "shit-hop" category as if they're the same as Sean Kingston, MIMS and Akon.

I see so much hate for Beyonce and to me a lot of it is unwarrented and is the "cool" thing to do on this forum. If you don't like her, why go into a thread about her just to hate? Sure, I do that for Prince sometimes but at least he's done something to deserve it by taking videos down. Beyonce is simply overexposed [well was, she's been on the downlow lately right?] and to me that shouldn't detract from her music at all. She was on a world tour after all so of course she's going to be visible.

I just feel like in every thread made about music today, there will always be some posters that come in simply to dis it because it's now and wasn't made in the 70's or 80's. I get that there are mainly older people on this forum but I think a little respect wouldn't hurt both ways. I don't really see the young people here slagging off music older people listen to so surely we deserve the same back?

Beyonce gets hated on? eek

Maybe that's how you view it because your a Beyonce fan. I think Alicia keys gets hated on here way more than Beyonce, but even as an Alicia keys fan, I can understand the Orgs points.

It's interesting to see what's liked and what's not liked on here, but overall there is no artist that is totally praised on here old or new.

THANK YOU. I've always wanted to post something like this. I think people on this forum tend to grossly exaggerate about how bad today's music is. Yeah there's alot of bad music out there, but there's also some great music. Artists like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5 and Pink are making some good, quality music and are very talented, yet are either overlooked or constantly slammed(in the cases of JT and Beyonce).

I don't get all the hatred towards JT here. His album was VERY good. Maybe nothing poetic, but it's a very good pop album. He's also not a bad singer, and he has a heavy hand in creating his own music. So what if he needs someone to coproduce. At least he's involved.

So yea..music has it's shit today, just like it had shit 10 years ago and 20 years ago. Doesn't mean that all of it is bad.

You obviously don't visit Beyonce threads very often wink

THANK YOU. I've always wanted to post something like this.

See, why should anyone be afraid to post what they truly feel about something? This is my point to the whole thread.

shrug Beyonce sucks. So does Nelly Furtado!

I like a LOT of music from this decade, but those two are definitely not in that category.

There's no individuality. Everyone uses the SAME producers. Hell, it's almost like it's more about the producer than the actual performer these days. mad lol

You proved my point. Someone's always gotta get in there and say it.

And they only use the same producers once that producer hits it big. Nelly F's album and Justin's album were the first to really use Timbaland for pop and they were really impressive - now every Omarion and even frickin' Celine Dion is using him so he's overexposed. But that STILL doesn't mean Nelly F's and JT's albums are suddenly crap because they used him first. Do you get me?

I get what you're saying, but you see, I never liked Timbaland lol I'm a Neptunes fan for life and Timbo uses the same damn sounds in his productions

If they make their music over those weak sounding shit hop drum machines, then they deserve to be placed in the shit hop category because those drum machines are the shit hop sound. And before anyone says that Prince used to use drum machines, yes he did but they sounded totally different. His drum machines used to beat hard and they were also mixed with real drums and bass.

These little dead asses also need to speed up the tempo. It used to be that old people made only slow to midtempo music. Nowadays, it's the total opposite. Older people are the ones that want to throwdown while younger people are the ones ready for a rocking chair and a nursing home.

I enjoy some of today's music. I happen to enjoy Loose and FutureSex/LoveSounds. That being said, there is very litter mainstream that I like compared to the earlier, better decades.

I'm sorry if your ears are broken or you're hearing-impaired but it's just simple fact that a disproportionate chunk of current music is fucking terrible. Subjectivity can only go so far. I see that you're 17, but honestly, youth is no excuse for poor taste. I'm 22. Should I be lined up waiting for tickets to shows for some of the artist's you mentioned?

Nelly Furtado used to be cute and creative and unique, but all she is now is a Vancouver born Beyonce. She sacrificed rhythm and melody for tacky talk-singing whilst half-dressed next to the hot rapper/producer of the minute.

Beyonce's voice and looks are both over-rated. She's a beautiful woman who completely lacks sex appeal and a fairly good singer who can't emote or prevent herself from showboating.

The Neptunes have been called creative and innovative, but last time I checked the definitions of creative and innovative didn't include constantly recycling beats and sampling from artists who (gasp! shock!) bothered to write their own material.

The reason you don't see "music older people listen to" getting slagged off is because for the most part, it doesn't suck. I'll take musical heft over cotton candy for the ears anyday. If that's weird because of my age, then I'm goddamned ashamed of our generation's tastes.

There's no difference in the music of today and the music of 10 years ago. It was shit hop dominated then and it's still shit hop dominated today.

and 20 years ago

Since this is 2007, 20 years ago would be 1987. Yeah, there was a lot of bullshit in 1987 because that was two years after Shitney Houston came out and influenced a lot of people to make slow adult contemporary crossover R&B.

For the majority of music to be good, you have to go back before 1984. In those days, you had hard strong uptempo funk and they didn't give a damn about having a crossover hit. They didn't have all these different producers either. Most of the bands themselves produced themselves, as well as writing all the songs and playing all the instruments. "Instruments", not that's something that people know nothing about these days. "Bands" are another thing people know nothing about these days.

I do what I can to keep track of decent music, old and fresh, and I really think there's nothing happening in the R&B department right now worth listening to. Open yourself up to other genres and you might find something to fill that void.

It must be. My 13 yr old says

1) that the songs I don't like, annoy her as well;
2) she's tired of Beyonce;
3) Justin Timberlake is a very lucky kid to be so successful;
4) likes most of what I listen to.

uh, the vast majority of the neptunes stuff doesnt use samples.

and there are a multitude of sample-based artists (amon tobin, dj shadow, rza, dj premier, rjd2...) who in the last fifteen years or so have made a lot of music about a million times more forward-thinking than anything prince has done in the same time frame.

some people really like what's out there now. shrug to each their own.

i've given up hope for commercial music a long time ago. i don't listen to the radio anymore (aside from npr) and i don't follow the current pop music scene much at all. in fact, when i do find something new on pop radio that i like, chances are i heard about it from this forum. lol

i think, for the most part, if you want good music you have to search for it. its out there but this ain't the 80s or the 90s, when good music still made it to commercial outlets. now the good music is all in the indie scene. check out local, small shows and support your unknown artists...that's where the talent is.
