So are the nine at the top the people who are in for sure (BTW, it's Donna Summer...a little respect for the queen of disco).

I sure hope she gets inducted! It's been a frigging long time coming. She AND Chic.

Give the original disco icons their respect.

My guesses:

Madonna
Afrika Bambaataa
chic
the Dave Clark Five
John Mellencamp

Only one disco-era act will get in this year, if any. And I think Chic would over Donna Summer. We can debate Madonna's merits, but remember, it's the Hall of FAME. The other 3, Af-Bam, DCF, and Mellencamp, all represent different eras.

I've heard snippets of Leonard Cohen's work and I said to myself, "wow . . . this sounds awful." I could be convinced otherwise, but I was underwhelmed.

True, Chic was picked in the nomination list last time and just missed getting inducted. But I still feel Donna may be inducted too. Of course I feel John Mellencamp should've been there a long time ago. Afrika Bambattaa, I can see being inducted too, the second rap act, you know. We shall see how many inductees they induct this year. I hope it's more than five though. Too many tributes last time around (and didn't Aretha take too much time with her tribute to Ahmet, goodness gracious, it'd been fine if her voice was like it was in the '60s and '70s neutral ) plus the Ronettes' induction was such a "BOOOOORRRRRE!" thanks to Keith and Ronnie. rolleyes And you're right about Madonna, I feel she WILL be inducted. Maybe not this year but she'll get one but if she does next year, I'll be happy for her. Just in time for the new album, right? lol

out of this lot of people i would say afrika bambaataa, donna and john
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I only watched when Prince was inducted. And those were 2 classic performances. That solo? Oh my.

I'd hope Donna and Chic and Bam would get in at the same time; they represent the best of one era of black music and the beginning of another.

When did Mellencamp start his recording career? He should be hitting that 25-year mark right about now.

Would he and Madonna be first-ballot HOFers?

Well not sure if everyone knew this but this is John Mellencamps fourth shot at this, he was on the ballot 3 times and didnt garner enough votes, in those years he missed, there were questionable inductees like Percy Sledge and the Ronnettes. My problems with the HALL is that they now seem to balance their show out, they try to draw from 1 of this and 1 of that, instead of just nominating who is should be in not because they need an RB act this year or a Punk act this year. But the hall is very flawed as we all know, bands like Chicago and Hall and Oates are not in, NO Real ROCK females with the exception of Janis Joplin, no HEART, JOAN JETT or PAT BENATAR, to me NO more women should go in before all 3 of those are in. Next year will be interesting as Bon Jovi will be up.

No, I think Madonna would be if she gets in. But John has been around since the mid-'70s when he was known as Johnny Cougar in 1976. He changed his name to John Cougar Mellencamp around 1982 I believe and shortened it to John Mellencamp in the '90s so he's been recording for like 30-plus years.

You know I'll watch. wink I'm sure Mike (Matronik) is somewhere freaking out right now. lol

Actually if I can be honest, I'm gratified but shocked that the Hall of Fame committee finally had the balls to nominate Donna (who paved the way for someone like Madonna) after all this time.

Yeah i forget which year John was first on the ballot but he did miss the votes 3 years straight and the last year or two wasnt even on the ballot anymore, i think this year he finally will get in since there really isnt a ROCK act on that ballot. I can only imagine that show ending JAM session, people underestimate John Mellencamp's soul roots, but he also was one of the first to embrace rb females like Heather Headley,India Arie and MeShell, using them on his records before anyone would give them a shot.

Bon Jovi is interesting because technically they should be on this ballot since "Runaway" was actually recorded in 1982 and released in 1983, however John didnt piece BON JOVI together till late 83 and release the Band album till 1984. "Runaway" is actually just him.

Isn't it too early for some of these people? I mean, k.d. lang? I love her to bits, but R&RHOF? If there's a Country Hall of Fame (I believe there is, correct me if I'm wrong), she should get inducted there first (Or has she?). But my main point is, for God's sake, give it to LEONARD fucking COHEN! I can't believe he's not inducted yet. The Cohen tribute album Tower of Song which featured Bono (U2), Elton John, Billy Joel, Don Henley (Eagles), Sting (The Police), all inductees already, came out more than ten years ago. IT IS TIME!

And that's why I fux with John. I always thought he was a brother stuck in a white dude's body for some odd reason. Maybe because he's rebellious in his thinking and very militant in the hard-working man's circle of his beliefs. I've always been a fan of the way he carries himself and I love "Jack & Diane", "I Want a Lover", "Wild Night", "Pink Houses" and "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." I grew up on him as I did Madonna and Donna. smile

Yeah, I just checked Billboard, she's nominated. I have a feeling though that they'll give it up for Chic and Donna before they do the same for Madonna. In a historic retrospect, they need to. They're the acts that paved the way for Madonna.

But it'll be interesting if the nominees end up being:
Chic
Donna
John
Madonna
Afrika

I feel Leonard may get the Peter Toole treatment...again.

Yeah i agree, John to me is the most consistent Male performer album wise since the mid 80's, constantly putting out solid albums. I remember back in the mid 80's when John did "Cherry Bomb" and in the video there was a black guy dancing with a white girl, he said he was getting death threats from the KKK when he played certain towns. John has a wide range, people mainly think of him as a folk artist but he embraces everything, i mean he worked with Junior Vasquez on one album after Madonna called John and told him to work with him. And also when John first got into a band when he was around 15 years old he was doing James Brown songs, then someone said why not right your own songs and do them, and John said "why, James wrote all the good ones, let just do them", i think in the "Crumblin down" video you can see John's respect for James and soul music in general.

Throw out the Beasties Boys, Keep Madonna, The Dave Clark Five, Leonard Cohen and possibly Chic. John Mellencamp would be a good addition as would SRV and Bambatta. Metallica can wait until next year as should Donna Summer. All of the other recommendations are toasty toast .
