It's hard to forget the damage she did with her influence. However.....if she still had that same magic touch to influence people in this present day and age, back to funk and undo what she's done...I might change my mind about her.

I would say for most of Lionel Richie's solo career he recorded a lot of insipid, sickening songs. It's hard to think of a soul artist who compromised his roots the way he did -- and that's even considering Michael Jackson. "Todo está bien chévere" Stevie

I still wonder why he couldn't make a decent follow-up album 'Dancing On The Ceiling' (the song and the album) is a mess. I loved "Can't Slow down" too, I thought it was a wonderful album, I even liked the sappy "Hello".

I think it has a catch melody but the lyrics are horrible. This just goes to show that a potentially great song can be ruined if the songwriter is on crack.

Elton John's "I'm Still Standing".... http://www.youtube.com/wa...SNgW0IYQ3M Although "I'm Still Standing" is a much better song than "Dancing on the Ceiling". Are you kidding? I'm Still Standing is like a freaking masterpiece, IMO. Elton John sang like a champion on this track. Now the video on the other hand is one of THE gayest video of the 80's!!! Too colorful. I can't stand her so much for weak influence on the artists that came after her, that if Prince and Rick James both together wrote, produced, and played some funky music for her to sing over, I think I would pitch it in the trash. What about So Emotional? That song is very uptempo (rock guitar included). It's the only Whitney song that could work in a DJ rotation. http://www.youtube.com/wa...RVmPfiYSeI [Edited 12/5/06 17:05pm]

It's still pretty weak though compared to people that came before her. I've never been one to lower my standards....even when jams become scarce. I just pull my old stuff and wait for something better to come along. Andy is a four letter word.

I'm not really a fan though of Elton John's 80s stuff anyway. The song's ok I guess. More for nostalgic reasons than anything else. I think that her first two singles ("You Give Good Love" and "Saving All My Love") are very soulful....these are R&B slow jams that became pop hits."You Give Good Love" was produced by Kashif so it's not as pop-ish as most of her later singles.

No it's not as poppish as some of her later stuff but it definately sounds like it was recorded with the intention of crossing over (which totally turns me off). Yeah, most R&B songs that become pop hits usually started out on R&B radio and become a hit on there first. However, I saw a documentary on her on one of the channels, maybe the E Channel, that her producers, record label or someone told her when she was recording her first album...."Tone it down Whitney. You're sounding too black. You want a big hit don't you?". It's very clear that she was more concerned with doing whatever it took to get a crossover hit, than having the guts to stand up to these people. If someone calls theirself making R&B music, they need to make the strongest and best R&B songs they possibly can. If the pop audience just happens to like it...fine, but if they don't...fuck 'em.
