3 undisputed facts:
1. Dave Matthews sucks old man's ass.
2. I like "Hounds of Love" very much.
3. "Jagged Little Pill" shits all over "Hounds of Love".

Hey, I totally respect your opinion - I think the Xanadu soundtrack shits all over anything ever recorded by Morrissey and/or The Smiths. I feel ya, brah!

By the way: SO PISSED that the Xanadu soundtrack didn't make the list. What, you people think Olivia Newton John and ELO just went around making albums together all the time, as if they were knitting booties on a subway train?

Whatever, y'all.

Still, talk to Tricky or Antwan Patton and they'll likely tell you the same as me.

I know, I know. Not as if I'd say your opinion is dead wrong, or that you'd say my opinion is based in fantasy. We have the P&R forum for that!!!! lol

Based on your high recommendation, Hounds of Love is getting added to my wish list today.

(and she was fine backinaday.)

Hope you enjoy it. wink

The Velvet Underground & Nico—124 Not my favorite Velvet Underground record. I prefer the more normal rock & roll albums like Loaded and The Velvet Underground, and I was never a fan of Nico. But this album is their most artsy, and it made the most impact. The album is not just songs, it’s a whole style, a subset of Andy Warhol’s pop movement. It’s almost like they’re not really a rock and roll band, but a movie of a rock & roll band. Such high concept was too subtle for mass success, but the part they played in a genuine art movement made them one of the most influential bands to budding musicians and rock snobs alike.

I just listened to this album for the first time today. I had heard a lot of songs before on their best of comp, but hearing the complete record for the first time (the mono version was particularly surreal) was an incredible experience.

I think Nico must have hurt my appreciation for it. She sings some of the best ones. Strange, because I love Lou Reed's "singing."

But your comment about "ideas" is right on. I'm a big fan of Loaded, but it's not unique. It's just a bunch of good rock songs. VU & Nico is like nothing else.

That's probably why Loaded is my least favorite of the VU canon (aside from Squeeze which shouldn't count).

The problem with Loaded (aside from the lack of ideas) is the same as [I have] with Nico. Doug Yule kills some great songs. But Who Loves The Sun, Sweet Jane, Cool It Down, Head Held High, Sweet Nothing hell almost every song is great.

The Velvet Underground is my favorite of all their albums, but I may be giving Nico another try, too.

What's the outtake compilation, Another VU? I hear that's really good, too.

Definitely. It says a lot that Kind of Blue & A Love Supreme would even appear on what is essentially a list of pop music. I really doubt Prince would make it onto a list of Down Beat readers' favorites, but maybe I'm wrong.
