Z Cult Favorite/Alanis Morissette- "You Oughta Know"

Alanis went OFF on her debut song from her fantastic album "Jagged Little Pill". "You Oughta Know" is easily one of the best songs from a female artist in the last 15 years. Alanis has more talent in one finger than many of all the other female artists combined. Her vocals are SO on point, it's not even funny. The pre-chorus of the song is the true highlight. This too is the section where Flea from the Peppers shows his funk chops.

"Cause the joke that you laid in the bed that was me
And I'm not going to fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it"

BUT here's the lyric that's OFF the hook;

"And everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it....Can you feel it?"

Alanis sounds so good and sexy, a part of my body stands erect...Damn, did I just say that?..Oh well, whatever. This song is bumpin' something serious. When this first came out, I knew this girl was something special and DEFINATELY someone to reckon with. And she's hella cute to boot. Anyway, who else out there digs this song?

Jagged Little Pill is a great cd and still sounds amazing today. I think the cd has some fantastic songs on it and the lyrics are pretty good too. Her voice is not the greatest, but she does sing with passion and I love that about her. However, I have not been too thrilled with anything she's released since. I hate her version of Seal's "Crazy". She butchered that song to death. Maybe one day she will release something on the same par as Jagged.....

That's funny as hell, player! Seriously, I didn't know ya'll were keeping points! And then for me to LOSE points. None of this shit is that deep, dawg. With me, I'll throw up a thread of a cut that I've always liked. REGARDLESS if someone else digs it or not. If I put up something from Roger and it gets 100 posts, then cool. Same as when I ran a thread on Cat Stevens's "Wild World". Only one person posted and that was Funk Mistress. Didn't give a fuck one way or another cuz that's never been what this is about to me. I thought the purpose was supposed to be about sharing what folks dig. If u see a song that u can't get with, then fuck it, don't post on it. That goes without saying. But to actually tell a cat that "Damn homeboy, I thought you were cool and had good taste in music and shit. But now, since you busted all out with this sorry ass song..I gotta kick your ass to the curb!" One man's floor is another man's ceiling. Meaning, it's all about taste. If u ran a thread on something that I thought was sorry as hell, then whatever. I wouldn't post on it.

I agree. I dig her earlier stuff. Her lyrics are really good. Her wordplay is very creative. She harmonizes well with herself on her tracks. Which gives her a distinctive sound, vocally. Overall, I think she's hard. I've seen her in concert and she put on a good show.

The song rocks. Her delivery is impassioned. The lyrics are ribald enough to suggest sincerity.

And, Flea is killin' that bass. He's done more recent work with her, too, that just slammed...

Ain't Flea fuckin' it up?! Come on man, especially on that pre-chorus. At first, I didn't know WHO it was on bass. I was like "Damn, this shit is bangin'!" Then I found out it was Flea and I was like "Oh, o.k. No wonder."

Yeah man, you didn't know about the point system in this forum? you're gonna have to do some extra credit if you want to pass this semester. smile Really, i was just giving you a hard time. i was just shocked to see you start that thread, just didn't seem like your style.

By the responses i receive from the threads i start in here, i think it's safe to say that the majority of the folks here think my taste are busted, but i've made peace with that. ain't no shame in my game. wink

btw, i had no idea flea played on that song, so i'll pay more attention the next time that song invades my earhole.

Nah, nah, I know u were fucking with me. Seriously, When u run a thread, usually my ass is on there posting. But yeah man, I think Alanis is coldbloded. Especially THIS song. If she didn't do nothing else, EVER, I'll still be giving it up to her. Check out the girl's lyrics on this one, player. And the WAY she's delivering her vocals. This chick is pissed AND hot at the same time. I was like "Who in the hell is this chick?!"

She rerecorded JLP last year, put out an acoustic version of it. As for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, it was released less than a decade ago. Why reissue it?

And, finally, I appreciate the artistry of what Alanis does and brings to the table as a writer. I really dig her soundtrack work (her Narnia song is the bomb).

But all that doesn't mean I can actually stomach her singing all the time. wink

I wore out Jagged Little Pill for about six months and then I threw it out. lol Not because it was a bad album, but just because it was everydamnwhere. Everyone was talking about this song when it was out, be it because they loved it, thought it was anti-male, couldn't get enough of it, disliked her singing voice...the list goes on. The song made an impression, that's for sure. But now, when I hear the lyrics "Are you thinking of me when you f@ck her," or "Would she go down on you in a theatre," and remember that it's about this guy...

...I kinda throw up in my mouth a little.
