Josh Rouse - Subtitulo (2006) (my short review)

Just got my hands on this... very bossa nova style record. top notch, superior songwriting.

Quiet Town - very personal track of josh's.. about him moving to spain away from the life he had.. a nice opener, beautiful strings.. and (of course) a beautiful melody..
Summertime - a song about the reflection of childhood summers.. kindof warm sounding, acoustical track.. even a purple rain reference smile
It Looks Like Love - this is one of his best written tracks. brings back the flavor of his album "1972".. kindof funky beat to it.. the bridge sounds like anything great written by fleetwood mac.. this is what good songwriting does, it possesses the possibilities of comparing to past great songs, but still edging its own sound out of it.
La Costa Blanca - Instrumental track, acoustic and electric guitar. Still holds a beautiful melody to it. This track reminds me of something wilco would do.. even steel guitars make their way.. very nice..
Jersey Clowns - Acoustic track about a man who isn't getting his break in life.. wife leaves him while he travels for his job. one of those tracks that you have to listen to a few times to digest, but in exchange of your time you get a beautiful track with good songwriting.. distant strings come in and out of this track. the negative space is a plus in this one too.
His Majesty Rides - very bossa nova, and FUNKY. another track that recalls his very impressive "1972" album.. this one just simply kicks ass.. a definant highlight.
Givin' It Up - a very upbeat (pop flavored strings) song.. its catchy, not my favorite.. but one thing thats pretty good about this song, is his sincerity... its about his drinking problem and the goodbye he had to say to his loved one because of it.
Wonderful - another beautiful, "wonderful" track.. one of the best songs on the album... another bossa nova style ballad.. distant piano that dances with the melody all the way through.. "I think your wonderful.. don't change".. i feel the same way about your music josh... There is also a small piano part at the very end... kindof eerie
The Man Who.. - This one caught me by suprise.. its a duet with a lady.. and at first glance.. her accent made me a bit standoffish.. but after a few listens.. this track is irresistable.. a lot of energy in this track.
El Otro Lado - One of my favorite songs by him.. acoustic track with honest and sincere lyrics.. a great way to end a strong album...

This album reminds me of everything great by him.. its not a step forward, nor a step backwards.. its displaying some great, honest songwriting. Each album Josh has progressed as a better, more strong songwriter... thats why he is one of my favorite songwriters..

4/5 stars... thanks for this one josh.
