Heavensgirl

Just my two cents about Kanye: Yes he is talented and creative to a certain degree and any artist who brings something new deserves recognition but his arrogance is really a turn-off. He has no humility. For someone who made a song about Jesus you would think that he would know that Jesus taught about being humble. Why dont you ever see true legends in rap or R n B or rock act like this. People who have been around for 20, 25, and 30 years act appreciative of awards and accolades. When U2 won the Edge spoke so sweetly about appreciating the fans and so on. he didnt get up there like his band deserved the award and the industry BETTA' give them one. Im not saying Kanye doesnt deserve a grammy but damn!! Act like you understand that its just a blessing and here today and gone tomorrow.

It's surprising how often collaborations DON'T work, as evidence by many of the poor collaborations on this Grammy's and other award shows. I think that is probably why the Prince and Beyonce duet was so lauded - it looked like they actually bothered to rehearse.

The Sly & The Family Stone tribute in particular was really shambolic. The only thing having so many guest performers did was to show who could sing and who couldn't - so many weak voices. I read that they weren't sure even upto the last minute whether Sly would show up - and I think it would have been better if he hadn't. It was like the rest didn't know what to do when he was there or when he left. Was he really singing? Was he really playing keyboards? I couldn't tell.

A recluse with a massive attention-grabbing mohawk is surely a paradox?! Going to the effort of turning up, you think he would have made an effort to enjoy it... or at least look up.

Yep, that tribute really managed to kill those great songs, which is a shame because Prince & Larry used to do really very good versions and kept the REAL spirit of The Family Stone alive, which was great music.

Good point. But seeing Sly, regardless of the performance, was good for my soul. I'd grown up listening to his music, he's one of the musicians I can say truly influenced my life in some way, and I'd never seen him perform live (in person or on broadcast).

American Idol' Crushes Grammys in Ratings

NEW YORK, Feb. 9, 2006
_____
(AP) Some humbling news for professional musicians like Madonna and U2: By a wide margin, TV viewers prefer the amateurs.

Nearly twice as many people _ 28.3 million _ watched "American Idol" than watched the Grammy Awards _ 15.1 million _ when the two music programs went head-to-head in prime time Wednesday, according to Nielsen Media Research.

In large part due to the "American Idol" competition, it was the least-watched Grammy Awards in Nielsen records dating back to the 1970s.

It certainly wasn't what CBS, Grammy producers or the struggling music industry anticipated after packing the show with star-studded performances. Kanye West, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and Christina Aguilera all performed, and the show also featured a colorful appearance by reclusive star Sly Stone.

During the 8 to 9 p.m. EST hour, when the Grammys competed directly with "American Idol," the awards show featured Madonna, John Legend, Coldplay and U2 _ with the Irish rock band's duet with Mary J. Blige arguably the evening's most thrilling moment.

After "Idol" went off the air, the Grammys picked up a little steam. For its full three-and-a-half hours, the Grammy Awards' average viewership was 17 million people.

The least-watched Grammy telecast was in 1995 when the show was watched by 17.2 million people. Last year's show was seen by 18.8 million people, with 26.3 million viewers in 2004.

Ok Muh Thoughts

Madonna is not a vocalist, she is a performer. End of story.
JayZ & Linkin Park - They have their own audience who tuned in just to see them perform and hopefully those youngsters were enlightend to Sir Paul even tho it was a lackluster performance. Pick up Rubber Soul and tell me your opinion of him when ur 18.
Joss Stone is a bit overblown, but she can sing when she wants.
SugarLand are a great lil country duo **used 2 b trio** who have the ability to go far in the country landscape.
Kelly Clarkson has decided to take the fame that was offered and turn it into pure sucess and anyone who watched her MTV VMA performance in Miami knows that the girl can entertain.
Now here is where i'm gonna catch a brick or 2. Prince is NOT a vocalist. At least not by my definition. I love the music that he creates and the way that he delivers it **most of the time**, however, I couldn't think of putting him in a league with Sam Cooke / Otis Redding / hell, even D'Angelo. He knows how to put on a show, he knows how to write & play the music, but he IS NOT a vocalist.

Mariah, well, all I'm gonna say is bless her heart. She had her comeback year when she wasn't even 15 years n2 the game, guess that makes Musicology look like spry young'un.

And last but not least, Mary J & U2. These artists are both getting beyond their time in the light. What is it that P said at the Pepsi Show in 2004? No matter what you do, nothing is worth the fame? Well Mary, u have had ur 15 minutes, thats all that Andy promised ya, now take this time 2 sit back and think of how your gonna make Be Without U a major US hit. Bono, go back to helping those who can't help themselves. I know its selfserving, but do it anyway. I haven't been happy with a U2 release since The Joshua Tree. shrug lurking

Do most of you agree that my red sunglasses were quite snazzy?

A little behind the scenes information from last night; the Edge was drunk out of his mind.

Still haven't decided what to do with the 5 Grammies. I might melt them down and make bowls for the poor. Or maybe I'll make a big necklace out of them and walk around Dublin with my Grammy bling-bling. Can't decide.

Hope you all are recycling.

Did anyone ever find out the actual answer as to why/how NARAS allowed U2's album to qualify for this year's Grammy's if it was a 2 year old album (and someone said won last year too or something like that?)

I really want to know, seriously.

I'm not sure, but I think the system runs similar for most award shows: there's a bit of a grace period overlap, for music released just before the last awards but wouldn't have had time to make a proper impact. If you release your album in that overlap, your music is effectively elligible for 2 awards shows! Which is why, bizarrely, someone can win best newcomer and still be elligible for the same award the following year!

You're right on about that, but what would you expect from a rapper? If you let him do it, he will do it. Paul McCartney should have tried his best to stop the whole thing altogether.

if i see bono or any other memeber of U2 again - punch FUCK SAKE!! and that album been album of the year for 3 years running hasn't it? WTF?

why was Jayz on stage w/ those other two. he nearly embarrassed himself. how ackward.

and MC disbelief she sounded fine but i still get the vide that she's craking up. matbe she needs more time off.

I'm at work, so I haven't been able to read all the new comments posted to this thread. Not sure if anybody has already posted this, so I'm just going to add it.

A co-worker of mine told me today that she heard that Sly Stone had a real bad case of stage fright on Grammy night. She told me that he was crying after his performance and threw up. Sly did make a bit of a hasty retreat during his performance on the Grammys, he didn't stay onstage long at all. Now, I'm not sure if that's fact or fiction, but I was just wondering if anybody else heard the same thing.

What's hilarious is that when my co-worker told me the story, she thought that the announcer or whoever she heard it from was talking about Sylvester Stallone. falloff falloff I told her, "No, it's not Sylvester Stallone, it's Sylvester Stewart, aka Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone." She then told me, "Well, I can't tell one group from the other." I felt like saying, "I guess not." falloff falloff
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I would give the show a 6 out of 10. Some of the performances were good and others were bloody awful. For example, the tribute to Sly was horrible and he looked and acted like a complete nut-case. I have to give kudos to the Grammy committee for not giving album of the year to Kanye or Mariah. That made the entire show worthwhile to me. And, record of the year to Green Day was the right choice.

Go U2!!!!
