I think they knew Sly might bolt, so they wanted some extra star power onstage just in case. I maintain Sly's performance was as good as anyone else's in that tribute.

Sly's appearance, was the highlight of the whole dang show...

cool

I have a question for those of you who feel that Sly's performance should be accepted. Just because an artist has reached the heights that Sly Stone has, And has been an inspiration to generations od musicians that have came after him. Should we accept just any kind of performance from them even if they are rarely seen in public or hardly ever perform anymore? I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone but the Sly Stone I saw last night was uninspired. I think that rather then give a performance like that, He should've turned down the Grammy's request when they asked him to play. Instead of performing, He should've just came out and had words. That would've been better then what we saw last night.

What you saw last night was not Sly's fault. The man who dominated Woodstock with Jimi Hendrix was sharing a stage with motherfucking Ciara, Will.i.am and Joss Stone... all of whom were given more stage time. The man re-emerges with 85 % of the band that catapulted him to fame and he gets that lousy ass re-introduction to the world? Like I said on another board... time should have stood still for a few seconds.

This is my point... and your opinion is what I think is wrong with the music consuming public when it comes to musical legends. You just witnessed a musical god on stage last night. A man who doesn't HAVE to prove shit anymore because he did it from 1967 through 1973. Instead of accepting his appearance for what it is... you knuckleheads come forth with a "What has he done for me lately?" attitude.

Do you want me to tell you what kind of inspiration do you truly expect from a 62 year old man, whose life has been affected by severe drug abuse and a stroke? The inspiration came from the fact that he showed up to be seen after 13 years and to perform after 30 years. That's your fucking inspiration RIGHT THERE.

P.S. and for those who are hung up on the mohawk and gold lame suit... Do your research and you'll realize that Sly was never an ordinary dresser. Wore the biggest afro wigs and some of the most outlandish garb in the history of music... but he was still the shit

clapping Agreed! Thanks for putting things in perspective

I missed it (after McCartney, I started watching my DVR of Lost, then went to bed) - so it really looked like Sly walking off wasn't part of the performance?

No. It was pretty clear that that performance was going nowhere, he wasn't in the mood, and just up and left EVERYBODY hanging. None of the guests had their mikes on, and those that were on were on at a minimum (thanks to the consistently crappy abilities by the annual Grammy technicians), so when he left, it was awkward as hell. I'm sitting there watching this with my husband (who is an accomplished session and touring/concert musician in his own right), and we were just like, WTF???? It was a complete train wreck---but oddly enough we still enjoyed it for the freakniess factor of Sly alone! It was tragic and exciting and entertaining all at the same time....

I thought Joss Stone was pretty good boxed

She has a pretty good voice, but I think Viacom has some stock in her, shes on VH1 and MTV all the time. This is a SLY Stone tribute, lets get some singers up there with some history and who can really pay a fitting tribute. Maybe their oint was to introduce new fans, that's fine, but why start off with Joss Stone? She was born in 1985 probably. She doesnt remember Sly.

I think she was there to represent for the "Euro" contingent. In Europe her live shows are all funk music and that's the kind of kind of music she's known for here (I don't exactly know how she's marketed in the States), so I kind of see her as the token "foreign" artist for the moment at all of the American awards cerominies. And since she's the only one at the moment doing soul music that has crossed over into mainstream America, it just seems like a logical choice to me that she was chosen to hold the "import" spot on the stage.

derek

Just remember how much Sly inspired Prince....infact Sly reminded me of bad-ass 1984 Prince - swagger on stage knowing you're too cool for school, sing a couple of lines and leave with everyone hanging!
oralI sincerely want 2 fuck the taste out of your mouth oral

My thoughts:

As a sly stone admirer I couldn't wait. When he came out with the silver outfit and that high ass mohawk (that picture posted on this thread doesn't give the actual height of the mohawk justice) he exceeded any expectations I had. That was until I noticed his "hunched back" as you people have referred to it. That bummed me out. I remember thinking "why isn't he doing anything" as the music was going on and he was "playing" the keyboard at an inaudible volume.

Then he tried to sing and um... the typical award show shitty audio guys issue hit right on cue, his mic wasn't turned up loud enough. That ruined it. Fair or not to sly (totally not fair IMO) the performance is gonna leave a cloud oon any comeback he wants. I just hope it doesn't detour him and even if he doesn't have major label backing I hope he releases something. That's the only way to judge if he's "done" or not (as someon this board have so ignorantly stated).
