His early records featured sprawling songs with romanticized visions of street life and hints of folk/rock, r'n'b and even a little jazz, here and there. I'm not crazy about these. This period culminated in Born to Run. Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. all took a more stripped-down approach to telling tales mostly of the working class. Darkness did so with hard-edged guitar rock. The River was more eclectic, stylistically. Nebraska consisted of demos recorded at home on a 4-track cassette recorder, featuring voice, guitar, harmonica and little else. Born in the U.S.A....well you know about that one. As these records went along, the melodrama diminished and the lyrics became more straight-forward. Tunnel of Love, Human Touch and Lucky Town are records with very adult lyrical concerns. Tunnel was written during his first marriage and takes a very sophisticated look at relationships; the music is very AOR. Human Touch and Lucky Town (released simultaneously)are records that delve into the grey areas of life, with Lucky Town mostly celebrating the pleasures of coming to terms with who you are and finding someone to share that with. These are my favourite Springsteen records. The Ghost of Tom Joad is a mostly acoustic record that tells tales of the poor (especially Mexican immigrants). Not crazy about it. Most of the songs on The Rising were inspired by 9/11 and it's a moving record. Devils & Dust is another acoustic record of story songs focusing on the downtrodden. Springsteen is an excellent lyricist (especially post-Born in the U.S.A.) and an amazing live performer. His concerts are really something to witness (I would suggest checking-out the Live in Barcelona DVD). [Edited 9/29/05 15:11pm] Interesting - The Ghost of Tom Joad is easily my favourite album of his that i have. Though I did not buy The Rising based on the fact that I didn't enjoy the title track and I haven't heard Devils & Dust. "The Rising", to my ears, is one of the weaker songs on the album. If you like Joad, you'll probably dig D&D.

You are thinking of the Born to Run through Born in the U.S.A. years. Now he sounds mostly like a hillbilly.

Beautiful, beautiful work. I'm with you on that. I think they made beautiful pop music, but a lot of folks really don't like them. Oh well...more for me! And add me to the Bob Dylan list. I have just never ever gotten his work, and haven't really heard anything that sounded good enough to make me want to explore any of his albums. Part of it is that awful voice. I just can't tolerate it. Granted, my introduction to him was on the We Are the World single, and even at 11-years-old, I was like "What the fuck is that sound?" Surf's Up.Wonderful.Heroes and Villians,Let The Wind Blow,I Just Wasnt Made For These Times.Warmth Of The Sun,Cabinesscence.Wind Chimes are GREAT Beach Boys tunes too

I lot of people I know really love Elvis and I used to dig him when I was younger. These days, his songs just sound like wordplay exercises to me; the desire seems to be to impress the listener, rather than move him/her. Although I will give him props for penning the line, "Wasn't it a millionaire who said 'Imagine no possessions'?".

Pink Floyd - I realized a month ago I don't have anything by them. Bob Dylan - it's the lyrics. The Beach Boys - you don't like them? Have you heard Pet Sounds (1966)? I think it's really all about Pet Sounds. KOKOMO Port Au Prince I wanna catch a glimpse why do all Beach Boys fans hate this song. Kokomo is a cute catchy pop song--I heard Papa John Philips had a hand in it. But it's not a real Beach Boy song--no Brian Wilson. And it's pure fluff. Check this song out at:

Everybody on here is dissing Bob Dylan, but I guess nobody but ME thinks The Rolling Stones are one of the most OVERRATED acts of all time!!!
Sure,I can dig a couple of songs but I have NEVER EVER felt the need to buy a freakin Rolling Stones album. And frankly Mick Jagger ain't much of a singer,Dylan actually sounds better!!! I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

As far as Dylan goes, it's not about the singing. It's about his passion, his lyrics and the way he emotes in each song. If you are lucky enough to feel the magic of Dylan, he can touch your soul. If not, too bad for you!

I first heard Dylan on We Are the World. It was one of the funniest things I'd ever heard. "Who is this? Is this a joke?" My dad said "It's Dylan." I'd heard of him and that he was good, I just couldn't believe it.
Now it sounds normal to me. Kind of like the Sex Pistols, who sounded so dangerous when I first heard them. Now they sound like Rock & Roll. Check this song out at:

NIRVANA!
Please God someone explain to me why they got the props they did?? "Smells like Teen Spirit" irritated my SOUL. I hated that song and everything that followed. Were his damn jaws wired shut??! It was noise, pure noise...there was nothing...NOTHING musical about Nirvana! They should have called it "Nails across a CHALKBOARD" cause that's what they sounded like! They should have called it "Nails across a CHALKBOARD" cause that's what they sounded like! that was kinda the point, it wasn't supposed to be melodic, it was supposed to express that weird combination of anger, apathy, and frustration that many people between the ages of 15 and 27 were feeling at that time.... it wasn't supposed to sound pleasent, it was cathartic. oh, and for me, thje classic artist i hate is the beastie boys, it's not rap, it's just yelling over a minimilistic beat. The Ramones for me. They're music is so simplistic and braindead. Yes I realize that that's how it's supposed to sound, but there's plenty of other artists that I like who made careers out of simple, fun, catchy, samey-sounding songs (like chuck berry), but none were as fatuous and obnoxious as the ramones. And I don't think what they did was an innovation, taking rock n roll back its basics is not necessarily a good thing. Sure technique isn't everything, but limited technique limits the emotions you can express. Teenage recalcitrance and defiance is all well and good, but wasn't that what rock n roll was about from the very beginning? There were bands who were doing the same thing much earlier like the Kinks and the Who (and contemporaries like the Clash) who also had SOME musicianship and songwriting to back it up. I dislike nearly every movement in rock that followed them: punk, new wave, grunge, "crapcore" yeesh.
