Maybe I'm just extremelytolerant, because there are really no classic artists that I hate.

for starters, don't listen to his albums from the late 80s and early 90s. lol

Have heard some songs from Pet Sounds but not the whole album. I just don't like their sound...at all. In all honestly, I hate most 60s music, and they embody the sound pretty well. That's definitely a credit to them, as it's apparent that they were quite influential.

It's probably in my best interest to not reply to this thread, but I can't resist:

The Beatles
AC/DC
Pink Floyd
Bob Dylan
The Beach Boys

We'll start with those. biggrin

The Beatles - well we all know you don't like them.
AC/DC - I'm not really into them either.
Pink Floyd - I realized a month ago I don't have anything by them.
Bob Dylan - it's the lyrics.
The Beach Boys - omfg you don't like them? Have you heard Pet Sounds (1966)? I think it's really all about Pet Sounds.

KOKOMO headbang music Port Au Prince I wanna catch a glimpse lol why do all Beach Boys fans hate this song.

That's a perfectly assertive stance! I'm glad you gave that album a try. But I know what you mean about the 60s sound.. mostly how the music was sung, right?

How it was sung and how it was produced.

Twee harmonies... barf

Minimal bass... mad

Wall of sound vs. distinguishable parts... mad

That said, though, I can tell that the songwriting itself of the 60s (lyrically, melodically, etc.) was up to scratch and people have been biting it since. It just is filtered through all of the wrong mediums for my ears.

I guess I'm not as tolerant as I thought.....because I don't like Elvis. It's more of his hype that I hate though than his actual music, because I like "Only Fools Rush In". I like UB40's version 20 times better than his though giggle I really do.

It's hard to think of any legends I don't appreciate, but there are some musicians who get respect in some quarters that I don't really get.

Jay-Z--He just sounds bored to me, and his rhymes make me kinda bored.

Notorious BIG--Better than Jay Z, with a nice natural flow, but there didn't seem to be anything important about his rapping, unlike the other "G.O.A.T" 2Pac. Like Jay Z, I don't hear anything really innovative about his rhythm or rhymes, either.

Madonna--I don't get why anyone would rate her as a great artist. She's got good taste, has made good choices, but musician? Nope.

The Cure--Yech!!!!

Depeche Mode--Yech!!!

Morrissey--Yech!!!

Motley Crue--Their image is far more dangerous than their music.

Jay-Z's classic?

I've also never "gotten" Janis Joplin. And I've never been able to listen to enough of her music to even try.

If you're referring to some of his more well-known mid-80's work, more than a few Bowie fans might agree with you.

Major Tom is a character; a persona of his -not unlike Prince's Kid or Camille.

Joni Mitchell---considering how much I love 70s music, you would think that I'd be a huge fan of hers lol but,I just don't see what's so amazing about her.She doesn't "move" me.

Phil Collins---never liked his voice or any of his songs (a few of the Genesis songs are ok,though)

ooh yeah Bruce Springsteen. I tried asking my family what the big deal about him was.

I guess it depends which Springsteen you're talking about.

His early records featured sprawling songs with romanticized visions of street life and hints of folk/rock, r'n'b and even a little jazz, here and there. I'm not crazy about these. This period culminated in Born to Run.

Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. all took a more stripped-down approach to telling tales mostly of the working class. Darkness did so with hard-edged guitar rock. The River was more eclectic, stylistically. Nebraska consisted of demos recorded at home on a 4-track cassette recorder, featuring voice, guitar, harmonica and little else. Born in the U.S.A....well you know about that one. lol As these records went along, the melodrama diminished and the lyrics became more straight-forward.

Tunnel of Love, Human Touch and Lucky Town are records with very adult lyrical concerns. Tunnel was written during his first marriage and takes a very sophisticated look at relationships; the music is very AOR. Human Touch and Lucky Town (released simultaneously)are records that delve into the grey areas of life, with Lucky Town mostly celebrating the pleasures of coming to terms with who you are and finding someone to share that with. These are my favourite Springsteen records.

The Ghost of Tom Joad is a mostly acoustic record that tells tales of the poor (especially Mexican immigrants). Not crazy about it.

Most of the songs on The Rising were inspired by 9/11 and it's a moving record.

Devils & Dust is another acoustic record of story songs focusing on the downtrodden.

Springsteen is an excellent lyricist (especially post-Born in the U.S.A.) and an amazing live performer. His concerts are really something to witness (I would suggest checking-out the Live in Barcelona DVD).

Interesting - The Ghost of Tom Joad is easily my favourite album of his that i have.

Though I did not buy The Rising based on the fact that I didn't enjoy the title track and I haven't heard Devils & Dust.

sad

But...but...

For me, it's a mixture of the wonderful harmonies and the sheer joy of a lot of their music. It's hard to feel down listening to a lot of the BB's music, because it's just so full of...i dunno...spirit?

But then they reserve the right to pull out a tune like 'Caroline, No' and breaks your heart. Or my heart, anyway. lol

I'm with you on that. I think they made beautiful pop music, but a lot of folks really don't like them. Oh well...more for me! biggrin

And add me to the Bob Dylan list. I have just never ever gotten his work, and haven't really heard anything that sounded good enough to make me want to explore any of his albums. Part of it is that awful voice. I just can't tolerate it. Granted, my introduction to him was on the We Are the World single, and even at 11-years-old, I was like "What the fuck is that sound?"
