New Yorker - Nico Muhly says "Nothing is better than Prince." In the May 17 issue of the New Yorker, up and coming composer at Juilliard is listing his influences and says "Nothing is better than Prince." That's all.

Founder | Here's the entire passage, article is called "Ignore the Conductor: Student composers around New York", by Alex Ross, pages 102-103 or May 17, 2004 New Yorker.
"Of the composers I heard, the one who seems best poised for a major career is Nico Muhly, a twenty-two-year-old, spiky-haired, healthily irreverent student of Corigliano's at Juillard. He has formed his own private repetory, running from the purest, hootiest English choral music to minimalism in its raw, classic phase. These tastes reflect two sharply different musicial experiences--singing in a boy's choir and working in Philip Glass's electronic studio. He also listens to a lot of off-kilter pop, like Bjork, Mum, Ladytron, and Fischerspooner. "Nothing is better than Prince," he advised me. On a recent afternoon, he enjoyed motets by William Byrd, Khia's salacious hip-hop track "My Neck, My Back," John Adams's "China Gates," and Wagner's "Gotterdammerung"--the last for a school paper. Oh, this guy has a website, if you want to see what he means by "spiky-haired"!: http://nicomuhly.com/info.html ben -- "the prince.org guy" |
