What's the big deal with Prince and his new religion

Why Hate[b]

I have just recently become a member of this site, and I am amazed with how many people are hating on Prince because he has decided to get closer to God.
To me that is something that we should admire the man for, not put down.
So to all may fellow Prince fans out there, my question to you would be this: if You cared so much about him then why would you want him to do things that would possibly destroy his soul? Like you I to "sometimes" miss his "royal badness", but he said himself on the BET interview that he has "gotten older" and you know what, he has probably gotten a lot wiser. Maybe we could all learn something from him. In closing I have been a Prince fan since the age of thirteen, and it seems to me he has always put religion in his music.....so what is the big deal? biggrin

Couldn't agree with u more! clapping

We all should grow wiser and we all have different things we search for.
That is what growing older is all about. nod

I was an atheist before and now because of the many good and bad experiences I went thru, I became a believer. I can relate to the JOY Prince felt when he was emancipated.
But on the other hand, I do not judge or hate people who are not believers. We all need to search and find in our own ways.
But no one should be judged for it. sad

Prince has been a Jew for 4 years? (that must be the reason he doesn't eat non-kosher meat)

Thank you scandalous 69 for agreeing with me. Like you said people shouldn't judge anyone regardless of what his or her beliefs are. All I know is that I am thirty years old now, and growing up Prince was my idol. When I would hear religious lyrics in his music that made me want to learn more about God. yes.

Becoming part of a sect is hardly what I would call 'grow wiser'. And I have been a JW, so I know what I'm talking about.

Sects caters to weak people. Prince has never struck me as a very stable person (mentally speaking) and maybe the death of his child and his failed marriage is what pushed him 'over the edge', and made it possible for Larry G to move in.

Now he has given up the spiritual search (evident on the Lovesexy album etc.) and has settled for dogmas and indoctrination ("close your mind"). That's probably one of the reasons his music doesn't have a lot to offer anymore.

Dude you really need to mellow out already. How many shows are you attending of this "destroyed" soul again? Worry about your own soul, Prince seems as happy as I've ever seen him including your beloved Lovesexy era, letitgo.

Here's the Whole lot on This Subject. People wouldn't pick on Prince if he just performed his old tunes with the cursing and showed his Booty. But what they Fail to Realize is PRINCE ALWAYS Sang of Religion and Sex in his Songs;just Bothering some that NOW Mostly Religion is Sung about and the Sex is on the Back burner. He's nearly46 and he Slowed Down but Damn he Has to. The Man be Burning Out Big Time if he didn't sleep, eat and take Care of Himself. Plus well People just are Not into The Jehovah Whitnesses. People aren't Digging his Involvement with Larry Graham as Old Friends Haven't seen him Much plus well People Dug Mayte. all this Is what I think the Flaming is All about. But Really ya Shoulda Realized Prince was going to Mature Sooner or Later.

Well... it seems to me that we are all fans of the music. Some stuff we love and some we don't like so much... but Prince's relationships, soul and life choices are all his personal domain. Are we all really qualified to comment or judge on anything besides what songs we like?

Just asking... got nothing but love for ya'll!

I didn't mean to imply he had literally "destroyed" his soul... I don't know that for a fact, I'm not God. In my statement I was implying that according to his "religion" he no longer believes in having a soul, and if he does, it dies with the physical body... that's all I meant. As long as he has breathe in his lungs, I pray for his eternal soul... that's all.

strawberrydreams said: why would you want him to do things that would possibly destroy his soul? That's what I was addressing about his "new religion" (topic of this thread). Though it's not very new... he's been a jw since what... '98?

See, I guess the confusion comes with his old songs/past. I am all for Prince's search for God, but he feels the need to seep his music and interviews with religion. And you know how I feel about religion, especially man-made religion.

I could care less if he ever says another cuss word or not, if he ever performs "Head" again or not... I am merely trying to protect my spirit from his jw propaganda.

Besides... I read the bible... have yet to find where it says "fuck" is a curse word.

Just had to point out that the word "fuck" has only been around since about the 15th Century, thus, it wouldn't be discussed in the Bible wink

Not to mention the death of his parents. Also, I think that I read somewhere (the new Rolling Stone perhaps) that his mother was a JW and had wanted him to become a part of the group. If this is true or not, I'm not sure. Also, I've had a problem with JWs because they've taken the bilbe and turned it around to suit the bidding of it's creator. I'm a Christian and believe, as Prince once did as well, that Jesus died for me. I hold the bible to be the word of God. Not something for man to tinker with. Just my twocents

Prince should do whatever he wants and I could care less about his religious preferences. What I do care about is the quality of the music and, unfortunately, recently (I’m thinking about TRC) Prince has used his religious beliefs to create some of the most cryptic, nonsensical, and alienating lyrics he’s ever written. Listen to a song like “Amen” by Curtis and I don’t care if you’re a Satanist, that song’s gonna have you singing up to the sky. I can’t say the same for Prince, not at all. If anything Prince spiritual musings turn me away. I hope Prince can make a nice spiritual tune that everybody, even the most devote atheist, can holler along with. Aint one song on TRC that fills this void.

Not that it really matters, but I believe Prince's parent's were 7th Day Adventists.

And before we bash JW's for allegedly tinkering with the Bible, please remember that people have been "tinkering" with the Bible since day 1, especially Christians.

Granted JW's have interpreted the Bible in a way that is fundamentally different from what has become the tenets of traditional Chrisitianity, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their motives are any less worthy in their particular spiritual journey.
