The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Was this song written about a woman actually named Dorothy Parker? I always thought Dorothy was fictious?

There was a real Dorothy Parker she was a journalist and noted wit. Don't think that song is strictly about her though.

Interestingly one celebrated moment was when a lady said to her 'Age before beauty' when opening a door for her. Dorothy Parker glided through the door saying 'Pearls before swine'

Pearls b4 the swine? hmmm

Really...I have never heard of her. I asked because it was brought to my attention on another board. My screen name on that board is Dorothy Parker and someone pm'd me about it. Here is the entire private message:

i'm assuming you are a big fan of Mrs. Parker.
I love her. I am reading a story by her now.

she kept it real.

There is someone named Dorothy Parker? I got my name from a Prince song called 'Ballad of Dorothy Parker." smile You must be talking about Dorothy Heights?

Please tell me you are joking? Prince wrote that song about this writer named dorothy parker, who was known for her genius witty remarks. Notice he says "dorothy was fast" and "I needed someone with a quicker wit than mine."

She is one of my favorite all-time writers. She was an interesting person, she was born rich, tried to kill herself many times, wrote the most honest and bitter poems and stories anywhere to be found to this day, she lived to be like 85 and when she died she left all her money to Martin Luther King. She was the BOMB. I read her stuff all the time. Look her up on the web. *smh. biggrin

I have honestly never heard of her...oh well. Thanks!

I think that's so funny, because when I first got SOTT when I was maybe 12 or 13, back in the 80's when it first came out, I saw just the title of that song and I thought .."Why on earth is Prince writing a song about Dorothy Parker? He must read alot." I've always thought of him as very bright since then.

i knew of the author back then but hadn't thought to take the time to research her since the internet. I went to the link above and noticed something else kind of interesting....take a look at the Day she died. Maybe he feels a kinship that has to do with more than just appreciating her work.

No problem. FYI - There is a decent movie about her and the Vicious Circle starting Jennifer Jason Leigh.
